On a Picture of the Buddhist Monk Pema Chodron
By Toi Derricotte
Do I want to look like this? Women
with that playfulness in their faces, not
childish, but elfin, as if they have learned
how to shift the world, slightly, and let it
slip down the ice of its own melting. Women
who have been lost but not
hidden; clear-skinned,
wide-awake, their unmade selves
neither genderless nor fixed. I don't know where their genitals are. If heart is the center, do they feel the tug of longing there? What blossoms? In the brain? Belly button? Where? Is the clitoris throbbing? HOME CONTACT NEXT POEM

    TOI DERRICOTTE and Tender
    from http://www.english.pitt.edu/homepages/derricotte.html
I have been afraid to check out Toi Derricotte's Tender . I was going to add for some reason , but I know why.
    I love Toi Derricotte.
She is the co-founder of Cave Canem, Home for Black Poetry, with Cornelius Eady (which is reason enough to love her), but she is also a writer who scares me.
To say that she writes about shame is to say too little.
(Why do I feel the need to write such short paragraphs?)
Knowing her the way I do (which is to say, not well, but well enough), I knew that a book with a name like Tender was going to be extremely raw. I knew that everything I have read by Derricotte gets at a kind of tenderness, a vulnerability that breaks me down. Like, for example, this article . (In fact, she doesn't even have to be writing. She could just be looking at me with those serious, forgiving eyes and I could have to start crying.) What kind of thing could she have tackled in this book that would cause her to name it such a thing?
Even though I was afraid to go back into the places in my mind Toi Derricotte takes me, there is something addictive about it. Like the way you want to rub a bruise. You know it's going to hurt, but you want to do it anyway. Why? Maybe it's a way of knowing the bruise is there. Maybe it's a way of knowing you're alive. Maybe it's just something you can't help and it has no reason.

Poet, essayist Toi Derricotte to speak at URI
    Visit culminates Community Conversations
KINGSTON, R.I. October 15, 1998 Toi Derricotte, distinguished poet and essayist, will speak at the University of Rhode Island on Monday, October 26. The occasion of her visit is the recent publication of Derricotte's widely-acclaimed memoir, The Black Notebooks . Derricotte will share some personal experiences, read some of her poetry, and engage the audience in a discussion about race. Derricotte, who is a visiting professor at Mills College in Oakland, Calif., will speak at 7:30 p.m. in Edwards Auditorium, located on Upper College Road. Her talk is free and open to the public. Derricotte's visit is jointly sponsored by URI, the State Council of Churches, and the National Conference for Community and Justice. The Black Notebooks is a profoundly personal document in which Derricotte, a light-skinned black woman, delves into her contradictory feelings about "passing" for white and her recurring longings to "escape from blackness." Her painfully honest revelations shines a telling light on how white skin functions in a multiracial world and what whiteness sees and can't see. The book shows how whites harm both themselves and blacks when they dismiss black claims that white vision is defective.
