Plymouth in the middle ages was a small town at the mouth of the River Ply. The town was owned by the monks of Plympton Priory but in 1439 was freed from monastic rule and became the first English town to be granted a charter by an Act of Parliament. The economy of the town was stimulated by the building of the Devonport naval dockyard in 1691. Daniel Defoe A Tour Through the Whole Island of Great Britain
Plymouth is a town of consideration, and of great importance to the public. The situation of it between two very large inlets of the sea, and in the bottom of a large bay, which is very remarkable for the advantage of navigation. In the entrance to this bay, is a large and most dangerous rock, which at high-water is covered, but at low-tides is bare, where many a good ship has been lost, and many a ship's crew drowned in the night, before help could be had for them. Portsmouth was a small port until Henry V decided to establish a British Navy in 1415. Portsmouth became the main harbour used by the navy and in the 1490s Henry VII fortified the sea walls and then built Britain first dry dock at Portsmouth. In 1540 Henry VIII expanded it into the first royal dockyard. The fortress at the mouth of the harbour was strengthened by Bernard de Gomme, Charles II's chief engineer. The bastions were lengthened to take 28 guns.
In 1823 John Rennie helped the economy of the city by the building a canal that enabled goods to be transported from Portsmouth to Chichester and London . Railway lines were built to Portsmouth from Chichester and Brighton but it was not until 1853 that the Portsmouth Railway Company got permission to build a direct line to London Daniel Defoe A Tour Through the Whole Island of Great Britain

Exeter was established as a town by the Roman Army by the side of the River Exe in about AD 80. As it was the lowest point at which the river could be crossed, it became the gateway to the south-west tip of England.
A great deal of trade passed through the port on the river until 1290 when the Countess of Devon arranged for the building a weir across the Exe, three miles south of the city. It took nearly 300 years for the city to gain permission to remove the weir. In 1564 the city commissioned England's first ship canal to help to rectify its declining trade.

Preston was established as a port at the head of the estuary of the River Ribble. It became important from Roman times as a river crossing and rich from the weaving of wool in the Middle Ages.
John Horrocks
established the first cotton mill in Preston in 1786. The first railway in the town was built in 1803 to connect the southern and northern sections of the Lancaster Canal. This was followed by a short railway between the quarries of Longridge to Preston.
Preston
had been first represented in Parliament in 1295. Unlike most boroughs, the right to vote in parliamentary elections had been granted to all inhabitants of the town. Although Lord Derby , a supporter of the Whigs , controlled one of the seats, the other MP was often someone freely elected by the people of Preston. This created the possibility of Radical candidates being victorious.

In Roman times Gloucester was a fortified port on the River Severn called Glevum . The Romans established an army camp in Gloucester to protect the river crossing to Wales. The importance of Gloucester was revived when an abbey was founded here in 681. When the monastery was closed by Henry VIII the abbey church became the cathedral of the diocese.
Gloucester became a significant port in the Middle Ages but its importance was undermined by the growth of nearby Bristol . To revive Gloucester's fortunes, artificial docks and a canal connecting them with the mouth of the Severn were opened in 1827.
Daniel Defoe
A Tour Through the Whole Island of Great Britain
To Gloucester we see nothing considerable, but a most fertile, rich country, and a fine river, but narrower as you go northward, till a little before we come to Gloucester it ceases to be navigable by large ships, but continues to be so, by large barges. Gloucester is an ancient city, tolerably built, but not fine. There is a large stone bridge over the Severn; and this, and the cathedral is all I see worth recording of this place.

Southampton is a seaport standing on the peninsula between the mouths of the rivers Test and Itchen. The Romans built a port at Southampton in the 1st century AD. The port was developed by William the Conqueror who used it to transport goods between England and Normandy. William also arranged for Southampton to be protected by walls and towers. The walls were mainly destroyed by the French in 1338 but the towers remain.
English kings used Southampton when launching an invasion of the French coast and Richard the Lionheart sailed from Southampton on the way to the Crusades. In 1620 the Pilgrim Fathers embarked for America from Southampton.

In the 18th century Halifax was an important centre of the wool trade . Piece Hall was built in the 1770s and provided rooms for 315 merchants. It is now the only surviving manufacturers' hall in Britain. In the 18th century production of woollen goods in the Halifax area was based on the domestic system Power loom weaving was introduced in Halifax in the 1820s. As steam power became more efficient, Halifax and other Yorkshire towns, had a considerable locational advantage over other manufacturing areas. Daniel Defoe A Tour Through the Whole Island of Great Britain
The nearer we came to Halifax, we found the houses thicker, and the villages greater. The sides of hills, which were very steep, were spread with houses; for the land being divided into small enclosures, that is to say, from two acres to six or seven acres each, seldom more; every three or four pieces of land had a house belonging to it.
