The Romans built a fort at Cardiff in about 75 AD. The Normans later used the same site to build Cardiff Castle in the 12th century.
Until the building of the Glamorgan Canal in 1794, Cardiff was a relative small town. The canal linked the ironworks and coalmines of the Merthyr Tydfil district with Cardiff on the coast. By 1821 Cardiff had 3,579 inhabitants, which made it the 27th largest town in Wales.
The first dock was built in 1839 and this increased the amount of trade taking place in Cardiff. By this time Merthyr Tydfil was the largest iron producing area in the world. Two of the owners of these ironworks, Josiah Guest and Anthony Hill, joined forces to form the

Nottingham is situated on the River Trent. The name derives from the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Snotingham (the village of Snot's people). Occupied by the Danes in the 9th century and became their most important centre. The Normans also recognised the strategic importance of Nottingham and built a castle here.
In the 18th century Nottingham became an important centre for the lace and hosiery industry. The town grew rapidly in the 1780s with the boom in cotton spinning and the increased demand for hosiery products. Local framework-knitters received high-wages and this led to an increase in the number of people moving to the town. By 1845 the population of Nottingham had reached 52,000. However, by this time there was a decline in the demand for framework-knitters and the town was experiencing considerable poverty.
Daniel Defoe
A Tour Through the Whole Island of Great Britain
Nottingham is one of the most pleasant and beautiful towns in England. It is seated on the side of a hill overlooking a fine range of meadows about a mile broads, a little rivulet running on the north side of the meadows, almost close to the town; and the noble River Trent parallel with both. The beauties of Nottingham, next to the situation, are the castle, the market-place, and the gardens of Count Tallard.

Chichester was originally built by the Romans in the 1st century AD. When the Romans first arrived they used it as a base camp but later it was laid out as a market town and administrative centre. Today, Chichester's four main streets, crossing at right-angles, follow the lines of the original Roman street plan.
William the Conqueror
gave Chichester to Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Arundel in 1066. Work on Chichester Cathedral began in 1091. It was largely rebuilt in the 12th and 13th centuries after suffering fire damage. It's spire is 277 ft high and can be seen by sailors on board ships many miles away.
By the 14th century Chichester Harbour was used to export wool and wheat. Later, cloth became one of the city's most important commodities.

Defoe, Daniel Journal of the Plague Year
On-Line Text Genre Novel Keywords Disease and Health Epidemics History of Medicine Infectious Disease ... Society Summary Set in 1665, Journal of the Plague Year is a fictional account of the plague that set upon London that summer. Defoe, one of the first British novelists, walked a thin line between fact and fiction. His book poses as a firsthand account and contains statistical information on the plague, but is primarily fictional. His novel charts the development of the infection, its spread, and the destruction it left in its wake. He provides gruesome accounts of medical practice in the era, including graphic descriptions of women dying in childbirth and vast burial pits. Doctors tried to stop the spread of the disease by killing 40,000 dogs and 200,000 cats who they assumed carried the disease. Commentary Defoe's eighteenth-century language seems a bit stilted, but his book is still an effective teaching tool. It might form an interesting historical work for a class on infectious disease and its control. It may add historical perspective to AIDS study.

Hull is situated where the River Hull flows into the Humber estuary. The town was founded by Cistercian monks from Meaux Abbey in the 12th century. In 1293 Edward I acquired the settlement from Meaux Abbey and laid out the town with new docks. The parish church of Holy Trinity is one of the largest in England and is notable for its early use of bricks.
For hundreds of years Hull was used to export wool to Europe. It also became Britain's busiest deep-sea fishing base. William Wilberforce was born in Hull and his family home has been turned, together with neighbouring houses, into a historical museum with special emphasis on the slave trade
In the 19th century Hull was kept busy exporting textiles and importing food from Australia and New Zealand.

Oxford, a medieval town, grew up in the angle formed by the junction of two rivers - the Thames (called locally the Isis) and the Cherwell. The central crossroads of the old town is known as Carfax (a word derived from the Latin for 'four forks').
In 1167 Henry II ordered all English students on the Continent to return to England. Many of these students decided to settle in Oxford to create the kind of university they had seen in Europe. Disputes between the students and residents led to riots. Some of these students fled to Cambridge where they founded a new university. The loss of Oxford's students hurt the local economy and in 1214 traders and merchants invited them back again. University College was founded in 1249 by William of Durham. Balliol was established in 1263 and Merton, the first residential college, arrived the following year.
