Daniel Defoe

Christopher Wren, the son of the Dean of Windsor, and nephew of Dr. Mathew Wren, the Bishop of Norwich , was born in 1632. As his father was the king's chaplain, Christopher spent his early life in Windsor Castle. As a child he played with the king's son who later became Charles II
Christopher was an intelligent boy and did very well at school. He was particularly interested in mathematics and science, and by the age of seventeen had made several inventions. These included an instrument that wrote in the dark, a weather clock, a pneumatic engine and a new deaf and dumb language.
At Oxford University Wren developed a reputation as a brilliant scientist. He carried out a series of experiments that was to prove very important for health care. For example, he showed how it was possible to send people into a deep sleep by injecting them with opium. This helped doctors who wanted to carry out long operations. Wren himself used this system to remove a spleen from a dog. He also successfully used a syringe to transfer blood from one dog to another.

Daniel Defoe, the son of a butcher, was born in London in 1660. He attended Morton's Academy, a school for Dissenters at Newington Green with the intention of becoming a minister, but he changed his mind and became a hosiery merchant instead.
In 1688 Defoe took part in the Monmouth Rebellion and joined William III and his advancing army. Defoe became popular with the king after the publication of his poem, The True Born Englishman (1701). The poem attacked those who were prejudiced against having a king of foreign birth.

A town was established at Cambridge more than 1,000 ago when the Romans built an army camp on a small hill beside the River Cam. In the 5th century the town developed round the bridge over the river and became an important Saxon market. Four hundred years later it was under the control of the Danish army and in the 11th century it became a Norman military base.
The first students arrived in Cambridge in 1209 after fleeing from rioting in Oxford . Cambridge's first college, Peterhouse, was endowed by Hugh de Balsham, Bishop of Ely, in 1284. Clare College was founded by Elizabeth de Clare in 1336 and Mary of Chatillion, established Pembroke College in 1347. In all, there are 33 university colleges in the city.
The effective centre of Cambridge is King's Parade, a street with houses on one side and the wide expanse of King's College on the other. At its north end are three of Cambridge's most important buildings, Great St Mary, the Senate House and King's College Chapel.

Against the Jacobites
The great British author of Robinson Crusoe and Moll Flanders was anything but a success in life. Daniel DeFoe was so miserable a failure in business and finance that he went bankrupt and was thrown into debtor's prison. His muddled financial affairs caused him to hide under an alias ( Andrew Moreton ) from his creditors. To survive, the brilliant DeFoe took to spying and became so adept at it that he is thought of today as England's "father of the Secret Service Born and raised in London, DeFoe received a good education and, in 1683 went into business as a merchant. He joined the rebellion led by the Duke of Monmouth and narrowly missed capture and execution, a fate that befell several of DeFoe's naive, unfortunate school friends. Through his financial commitment to Monmouth , his business failed and DeFoe became a bankrupt and was thrown into debtor's prison.

Northampton, situated on the River Nene, the Normans built a castle here in the 11th century. This was demolished in the 17th century but some of the medieval churches still survive.
Northampton was destroyed by fire in 1675 and this gave the local people to build a spacious and well-planned town. The market square was one of the largest in the country. Boot, shoe and leather manufacture became major industries in Northampton in the 18th century. The prosperity of the town was improved by the orders from the army and navy during the American War of Independence and the Napoleonic Wars. Housed the the former county jail, the town's museum contains the world's largest collection of ancient boots and shoes.
The town grew slowly in the 19th century until the opening of the town's first canal in 1815. The census of 1831 shows that one-third of the men living in the town were shoemakers (two-fifths in 1871). Working-class terraced houses were built in the west and the north of the town. More expensive houses for the middle-class houses tended to be located in the eastern parts of Northampton. The population of Northampton in 1801 was 7,000. Sixty years later it had reached 33,000.

Defoe, Daniel
novelist england c1660, London - 26 Apr 1731, Moorfields (Northern Ireland)
Grave location: London: Bunhill Fields Burial Ground, City Road, Finsbury
Liberal son of a London butcher, James Dufoe. He was educated well at Morton School (he and his family were dissenters and he would have to take an oath of Loyalty to the Church of England to go to Oxford of Cambridge).
By 1683 he had become a merchant and in 1684 he married the heiress Mary Tuffley (two sons, five daughters). He joined the army of Duke of Monmouth to fiht for William of Orange, but when the rebellion failed he was forced into exile on the continent. While he was hiding at a churchyard after the revolution he had seen the name Robinson Crusoe carved on a stone. On the continent he wrote pamflets against James II and was he glad when William of Orange came to power after all.
In 1692 Defoe went bankrupt and he would never be free of debt again. He turned to writing and in 1701 he published "The True Born Englishman" which sold very well.
In 1703 he was pilloried and imprisoned (from may until november) for his pamflet "The Shortest Way with the Dissenters", which was loved by groups that were enemies of the Dissenters. But the public drank to his health while he stood in the pillory and read his verses aloud.
