Daniel Foe (he later added the 'De' himself, perhaps because of foreign ancestors) was born in London in 1660 to James Foe, who was possibly a butcher. The Foes were Presbyterians, one of the minority Protestant groups outside the Church Of England that were known as the Dissenters. He was educated at a Dissenter-friendly school and university and his father hoped he would become a priest, but Daniel dashed their hopes and became a merchant instead (apparently of hosiery). His mercantile activities took him all around Europe, and he may have fled to the continent on occasion to escape the wrath of political enemies.
Defoe was an extremely political man, and many of his works are satirical pamphlets on one topical issue or another. His most famous was probably 'The True-Born Englishman'. The (Catholic) King James II of England was thrown out of office by the anti-Catholic establishment and in 1689 a Protestant double monarchy was put on the throne in the shape of James' daughter Mary (known as Mary II of England) and her Dutch husband William of Orange (known as William III of England). Many people were suspicious of William as he was a foreigner, but Defoe had full confidence in him, especially as Defoe had tried to overthrow James II himself in the failed Monmouth Rebellion of 1685. 'The True-Born Englishman' made the point that all English people were of one foreign extraction or another, and it was quite reasonable to have a King from Holland.

Aberdeen is a seaport on the north-east coast of Scotland. Lying between the mouths of the Don and the Dee (its name means "mouth of the Dee" in Gaelic). It was initially established by the Romans but it was the Normans who exploited its potential as a port. By the end of the 13th century it was sending fish, wool, hides and timber to other parts of Britain and across the North Sea to Europe.
The city developed from two separate settlements. One known as Old Aberdeen, grew up around St Machar's Cathedral in the north. The other district, commercial Aberdeen, developed in the south, round the harbour on the Dee. Two of the earliest houses, Provost Skerne's House (1545) and Provost Ross House (1595) are now museums.
After the successes of the and the lines, Aberdeen merchants began to consider the possibility of building a railway. Under the chairmanship of Thomas Blaikie, the prospectus of the Aberdeen Railway was issued in 1844. Work began in 1845 but there were serious engineering problems. This included the collapse of three arches of a viaduct being built in the town. As a result of these technical difficulties, the railway was not opened until April 1850.

Biography of Daniel Defoe
By the time he took up his pen to write Robinson Crusoe at about the age of fifty-eight, Daniel Defoe had a broader range of experiences behind him than most can claim for a lifetime. At one time or another he was a merchant, a manufacturer, an insurer of ships, a convict, a soldier, an embezzler, a spy, a fugitive, a political spokesman. And of course, an author. A pardon some months later from Queen Anne hardly was a chance to start over. Defoe's tile and brick business had fallen apart during his absence, and he once again faced debtor prison. A grant of 1000 pounds from the Earl of Oxford allowed Defoe to climb out of debt and start his own newspaper, the Review. He ran his views and was frequently in trouble for them. After another arrest in 1715 for libel, Defoe spent his time covertly editing other newspapers as he worked on novels such as Robinson Crusoe and Moll Flanders. He died in 1731, poor and fighting.

In the 14th century Bristol was a major wool-exporting port. The port flourished for the next 400 years and as well as exporting wool and leather, imported wine, tobacco and cocoa beans. These imported goods became the basis for Bristol's manufacturing industries. By the 17th century, the port was heavily involved in the slave trade and this resulted in Bristol becoming the second most important port in England after London
Bristol contains the first Methodist chapel, the New Room, built for John Wesley in 1739. Other important buildings that date from this period include the Corn Exchange (1741) and the Theatre Royal (1766).

In the early 1680’s Defoe was a commission merchant in Cornhill, but went bankrupt in 1691. In 1684 he married Mary Tuffley; they had two sons and five daughters. Defoe was involved in Monmouth rebellion in 1685 against James II. While hiding as a fugitive in a churchyard after the rebellion was put down, he noticed the name ‘Robinson Crusoe’ carved on a stone and later gave the name to his famous hero. Download the easiest screen capture (print screen) program. Free trial Defoe became a supporter of William, joining his army in 1688, and gaining a mercenary reputation because of a change of allegiance. From 1695 to 1699 he was an accountant to the commissioners of the glass duty and then associated with a brick and tile works in Tilbury. The business failed in 1703. In 1702 Defoe wrote his famous pamphlet The Shortest-Way with the Dissenters . Himself a Dissenter, Defoe mimicked the bloodthirsty rhetoric of High Anglican Tories and pretended to argue for the extermination of all Dissenters. Nobody was amused. Defoe was arrested in May 1703, but released in return for services as a pamphleteer and intelligence agent to Robert Harley, 1st Earl of Oxford, and the Tories. While in prison Defoe wrote a mock ode, Hymn to the Pillory (1703). The poem was sold in the streets; the audience drank to his health while he stood in the pillory and read aloud his verses.
