ROGUE QUEEN
by L. Sprague de Camp
218pp/1950 Reviewed by Steven H Silver In Rogue Queen , L. Sprague de Camp spends the first half of the novel describing the amazing society of the Avtini, the most civilized race on the planet Ormazd. Society on Ormazd is based, loosely, on terran bee cultures. Each clan is ruled by a queen who is surrounded by drones and sexless workers. However, the Avtini, and other clans, are a constitutional monarchy. The queen is more a symbol than a ruler, abiding, more or less, by the decisions made by her council. The title refers to one of the sexless (female) workers who makes contact with the first humans to land on Ormazd. Because of her friendship with an older drone who is about to be euthanized, Iroedh begins to question the gender roles her people have. Through Iroedh's interest in the past, de Camp is able to plant clues that the Avtini did not always have such a stratified caste structure. Unfortunately, de Camp turns the story into an adventure novel about half way through. Telling of the humans and Avtini's trek through the wilderness, escaping rogue drone bands and the impending war between the Avtini and their rivals the Arsunni, de Camp losing the train of the novel. Instead of exploring the changing gender roles, he is merely relating a sword and sorcery adventure, with science taking the place of the sorcery. Rogue Queen begins as the sort of novel in which Ursula K. LeGuin examines gender roles and makes us think about what society forces on a person based solely on their sex. de Camp does not sustain this anthropological study, partly, perhaps, due to the phase in his career, and in science fiction, during which is was written. LeGuin did not begin her examinations until fifteen years later. Perhaps if de Camp had attempted this book with those additional years, it could live up to its potential. On the other hand, without

Lest Darkness Fall, to Bring the Light: 2 Books in 1 from Baen Books Price: Customer Review: Lest Darkness Fall was one of the first great alternate history books. Since the time travel isn't given a plausible explanation it was initially considered to be fantasy. However it's mostly too real to be fantasy. Since it was written in the 30's it was a little dated, but not too badly. Also it... more info Customer Rating: Click here for more information Buy from: United Kingdom Conan (No 1) from Ace Books Price: Customer Review: What we have in this series of books (starting with Conan, and proceding through Conan The Cimmerian, Conan The Wanderer, etc.) is an attempt to put the stories in chronological sequence, filling in the gaps from the late Howard's notes. Letter to L. Sprague de Camp
By Clark Ashton Smith
Auburn. Calif.,
Oct. 21, 1952. Dear Sprague:
I have your letter of Oct. 17th, and feel a little embarrassed in answering by the paucity of autobiographical detail that would be suited to your purpose.(I'm not nearly old enough yet to write my Confessions!) As for my education, that's easy enough to answer, since it has been mainly self-conducted, highly irregular, and largely a matter of following my own vagrant and varying inclinations. I did graduate from grammar school and register for entry into high school. But my real education began with the reading of Robinson Crusoe (unabridged), Gulliver's Travels , the fairy tales of Andersen and the Countless D'Aulnoy, The Arabian Nights and (at the age of 13) Poe's Poems. Poe seems to have confirmed me in a more or less permanent slant. which led later to Baudelaire and the French Romantic School. Beckford's Vathek , read at the age of 15, was another early influence. I did a lot of boyhood scribbling, imitations of Omar, lurid Oriental romances, etc.; and at l7 sold several pseudo-Orientales to the Black Cat and The Overland Monthly . Curiously enough, after that I wrote little but poetry for a number of years, and dabbled a lot in painting and drawing, the pictures being mainly grotesques and fantastic exotic landscapes. I think it was mainly Lovecraft's interest and encouragement (I began to correspond with him in 1922) which led me to experiment with weird fiction. My first genuinely weird tale, "The Abominations of Yondo", was written in 1925 and appeared in.

Belated Reviews #16: "Lest Darkness Fall"
and L. Sprague de Camp
Is it fair to just dismiss an important author's corpus so lightly? I think so. The point of these reviews is to identify works of past decades which may be particularly worth reading. An attempt to give every author lengthy and balanced consideration would sabotage this effort. The fact remains that while there are a good number of de Camp books that I've enjoyed, the only one I'd seriously recommend to newer readers is "Lest Darkness Fall." "Lest Darkness Fall" (***+), published in 1939, is a seminal alternate-history novel. It is the story of Martin Padway, an modern archeologist who finds himself in the Rome of 535 AD. This presents him with three problems. Theshort-term problem is that of making a living. He has a bit of money (1939 being back in the days when people typically had some silver in their pockets), borrows more, and proceeds to introduce friends, Romans, and countrymen to modern amenities such as brandy and newspapers. I described the book as 'seminal', an adjective which should be used with caution. Obviously the book owes a tremendous debt to Mark Twain's "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court", in which another American finds himself a few decades away from Padway, and a bit to the north-west. By the time of de Camp's novel, time travel had been used extensively, both within the genre and in the mainstream. (For anyone interested in reading up on this, the introduction to my copy of "Portrait of Jenny" recommends the article "Space-Time in Literary Form", by Margaret Walters, in the June 1942 issue of Tomorrow magazine.)

Skeptical Inquirer
March, 2001 by Kendrick Frazier
L. Sprague de Camp, author of more than 100 science fiction and fantasy novels plus nonfiction works on archaeology, ancient engineering, and fringe-science and pseudoscience, died November 11, 2000, in Piano, Texas, where he lived. He was 92. His wife, Catherine, his constant companion and frequent co-author, had died in April 2000. De Camp was a founding CSICOP Fellow. In fact, accompanied by Catherine, he participated in the conference at which CSICOP was formally founded, "The New Irrationalisms: Antiscience and Pseudoscience," April 30May 1, 1976, at the State University of New York at Buffalo. One of his comments there pungently countered the litany from credulous believers that you must always keep an open mind. "Many people have developed minds that are not only open, but gaping," he said. He also spoke at the conference of the circular logic often used by pseudoscientists, such as UFO enthusiasts who start by assuming what they wish to provethat flying saucers exist. He outlined five criteria for judging UFO contact reports. And he spoke of the tendency for pseudoscientific ideassuch as astrology, which by the beginning of the 1900s had been thoroughly discreditedto keep popping up in new guise: "In the history of cultism, one is always experiencing a feeling of deja vu."
