Correspondence to Edward Dorn from 1956-1993 comprises over half of the collection. Occasional letters are sent to either Peter Michelson or Jennifer Dunbar Dorn, but they are related either to the Rolling Stock
Extensive notes, drafts, and rewrites of Edward Dorn's poetry include Abhorrences, Book of Poems, Captain Jack's Chaps, Collected Gran Apachería, Cosmology of Finding Your Spot, The Cycle, Geography, Gran Apachería, Gunslinger, Hands Up!, North Atlantic Turbine, Recollections of Gran Apachería, Songs Set Two: A Short Count, 24 Love Songs , and Yellow Lola . Similar materials exist for Edward Dorn's works of prose, including Abilene, Abilene, The Book of Daniel, Shoshoneans, Some Business Recently Transacted in the White World, Views , and What I See in the Maximus Poems . However, various published works by Edward Dorn appear to have left no drafts or revisions to examine. Personal information about Edward Dorn is found only in the correspondence or interviews-most of the published work on Edward Dorn concerns his work, not his personal life.
Edward Dorn's publications Bean News and Rolling Stock include submissions by various authors and editorial notes. Broadsides include art and published poetry, as well as announcements of book signings or poetry readings. Taped interviews and recorded poetry readings comprise the majority of the AV materials. Photographs range from family snapshots to photos for illustrations or articles. Numerous books and periodicals have been removed from the collection and can be found in Archives and Special Collections at the Dodd Research Center. Check the library catalogue (HOMER) for call numbers.

[Container Listing]
Introduction When the Special Collections Department opened its doors in 1969, there was already established the solid beginnings of a manuscript collection. Several members of the English Department had encouraged the purchase of a number of collections, which eventually led toward the establishment of the department. Roger H. Guedalla and George Quasha were among the people who had been instrumental in purchasing a Modern Literature collection, which contained books and manuscripts focusing on the extraordinary group of authors and poets who had been involved with Black Mountain College in North Carolina. Many of these manuscripts are now housed with the Historic and Literary Manuscript Collection (MC 100), and include original materials by Robert Creeley, Charles Olson, and Fielding Dawson. Scope and Content The collection is arranged alphabetically by author and is comprised of 3.6 cubic feet of manuscripts and documents, including single items and small groups of materials of local, national, and world interest (ca. 1819-1989). The folder contents include letters, correspondence, articles, stories, plays, and legal materials.

  • About Black Mountain College

    American writer and painter
by Wally Dobelis, reproduced with permission A prominent book editor stopped me on the street to comment, bitterly, that no one in the big press had seen fit to remark on the passing of Fielding Dawson, a local NYC resident and one of the last survivors of the literary era that is associated with Black Mountain, the Beats, and their contemporaries in other forms of art, Pop, Shaped Canvas, as well as early Rock. I knew Fielding as one of the stalwarts of Max's Kansas City, the legendary artists' hangout from 1965 to 1974, as a short story writer and baseball fan. He was the pitcher for Max's softball team, and he had a pitch for me too, to support The Shortstop, a literary journal he was trying to resuscitate. Fielding knew small press publishing; he had written and drawn illustrations for such literary journals of the era as Jonathan Williams's Jargon, Sparrow, Kulchur, Caterpillar, El Corno Emplumado, Joglars, Rockbottom, Mulch and The Zealot. The names bring back the flavor of the era. We talked a lot, in the company of the Old Curmudgeon, a prominent lawyer friend. OC fondly remembers traveling with Fielding to the Cedar Bar on University, and to Lion's Head on Christopher Street, two prominent watering places for artists and writers. In 1930, after the birth of a son in New York, the Dawson family moved to the mother's home town, Kirkwood, Mo, near St. Louis, where dad found a job in journalism, and young Fielding acquired a taste for drawing and writing. In 1949 he joined the legendary Black Mountain College in Lake Eden, NC, to study painting under Franz Kline and writing under Charles Olson.

Wisden overview A silk shirt in an empty English cupboard, Richard Dawson helped bowl Yorkshire to their first Championship since 1968, and at just 21 was chosen for England's 2001-02 tours to India and New Zealand. An accurate, attacking bowler with a dainty, high-stepping action reminiscent of Peter Such, Dawson flights the ball well, and extracts plenty of turn, grips the turf and uses his height to conjure some hearty bounce. Easy-going and quick to learn, he took four wickets in his debut innings at Mohali, and stepped into the breach against Australia the following winter, following an injury to Ashley Giles. Although palpably out of his depth, he kept his head above water, and proved his temperament with some brave batting against the likes of Brett Lee. Handy in the outfield as well, he should be multi-dimensional enough to make more of a mark than England's last two wet-nursed offspinners, Jason Brown and Graeme Swann.
