A BODY IN THE BATHHOUSE

ODE TO A BANKER

When street-smart Marcus Didius Falco is coerced into a public reading of his satires, he couldn't feel worse. Yet his scribbling is met with rousing applause...and an offer by Chrysippus, esteemed banker, patron of the arts, and scroll merchant, to publish his work. Et tu, Brute! A euphoric Falco then discovers that Chrysippus expects to be paid for putting the budding author's work on papyrus. Falco is no Horace, but he has his pride. His ensuing altercation with the publisher makes him a suspect when Chyrsippus is found brutally murdered-a classic body in the library. Fortunately Falco has an alibi, and thanks to his friends in the Watch, he also lands the job as the homicide's official investigator. TWO FOR THE LIONS

"Everyone always knows already that the dead man was a serial seducer who lied to political colleagues, ran up hefty debts at a brothel, deliberately farted in the Basilica, and was known by an obscene name behind his back."
That quote numbers among many irreverent comments in THE ACCUSERS. If you have yet to meet Marcus Didius Falco and his wife, Helena Justina, you have a big treat in store. Lindsey Davis has created a first-rate pair of sleuths defending justice in the debauched Rome of the First Century. They have an outlook on life such that problems can be taken in stride, but pleasures are to be savored: "It was not often I had the beautiful pleasure of extortion from a relative. Life was good for an hour."
In 75 A.D. accusers reaped a hefty fee for successful prosecution of individuals they chose to bring charges against. Therefore, fabricating a story, especially about a particularly unpopular citizen, could - and often did - bring high rewards. Pursuit of the truth didn't enter into the equation. One character quips, "Trials are not decided by evidence but arguments." Except for the blatant monetary incentive, it sounds much like the courts of today.
Boasting clean togas, Falco and his associates pick up a case in the murders court. Their client isn't the first one to be accused of killing Gnaeus Rubirius Metellus. But someone seems to have tried to put it over as a suicide, which just doesn't wash with the accusers. Here's the rub: If Metellus did himself in, then his family would be forgiven the debt owed to the accusers from a prior corruption case. So proving he was murdered becomes a matter of money for the two inscrutable prosecutors. The ancient Romans demonstrate their decadence, greed, depravity and self-indulgence - but, due to Falco and his team, also their humanity.

Lindsey Davis: An Interview with the author of SILVER PIGS
by Ginny Lindzey Texas Classics in Action, Winter 1993 I wrote to Lindsey Davis recently on the off chance that she might answer a few questions about her writing. I would have much preferred to have traveled to London to interview her in person but, alas, the funds just weren't available in the TCA treasury. Nevertheless, Ms. Davis was kind enough to reply, answering all of my questions, which I thought might interest and entertain you. Ginny Lindzey, ed. What is your background? Where were you born and raised, educated, etc.?

Marcus Didius Falco - Private Informer, Imperial Rome (AD70s) Jump down to read a review of A Body in the Bathhouse
"The Jupiter Myth"
(reviewed by Cindy Lynn Speer FEB 22, 2004)
When last we saw wise cracking Roman gumshoe Marcus Didius Falco, he'd just solved the mystery of the Body in the Bathhouse . Now he has to solve the murder of the body in the well. He and his family are staying with his uncle-in-law, the procurator of finance, which is why, when a centurion decides to send for a higher power to take a look at what has happened, Falco gets brought along. It's the fact that he knows who the victim is that gets him in trouble. Readers may remember Verovulcus from the last book...and therefore remember that Verovulcus is King Togidubnus's oldest friend. The King is also one of the best allies Rome has in what can best be described as a delicate political balance, so it's up to Falco to discover who killed Verovulcus and why before the situation gets out of hand. What he soon discovers is that various establishments in the area...The Golden Shower, The Swan, Europa...all have more in common than names relating to Jupiter and his various amorous adventures. They are all establishments paying protection. He, his best friend Petronius and even his long-suffering wife Helena go undercover to find out just how far this plague has spread...and what it has to do with Verovulcus.

It's a close-run thing. Two authors have made a speciality of brilliantly researched and highly atmospheric thrillers set in ancient Rome. Lindsey Davis is currently ahead on points, and the latest Falco thriller, A Body in the Bath House , is quite the most diverting entry in the series yet. Steven Saylor's Gordianus the Finder series will have to scrabble to maintain this level. The highly impressive sleight-of-hand that Davis is so adept at is just as much in evidence here as in such previous entries in the series as Ode to a Banker : while the sights, sound and smells of ancient Rome are conjured up with a truly pungent verisimilitude, Falco's modern sensibility never jars, and this Philip Marlowe of the ancient world remains a perfect conduit for the reader. Cleverly extrapolating current fads, Davis demonstrates that even in AD 75 a passion for home improvement has gripped the Roman Empire. Falco is losing patience dealing with two cowboy builders who have been wreaking havoc on his bath house, but after the contract is finished, Falco and his father investigate hideous smells and find grisly human remains on the site. Simultaneously, in the primitive outpost of the Empire that is Britain, King Togidubnus is creating a spectacular new palace, but murderous accidents and corruption are bedevilling the project. Rome's Emperor Vespasian sends Falco to sort out the trouble, and this gives Falco a chance to escape from his dangerous feud with a Roman spy. Needless to say, as he penetrates to the heart of the mystery in Britain, his own life is (as usual) soon on the line with an implacable killer on his trail.
