Davies, Robertson World of Wonders
Genre Novel (316 pp.) Keywords Body Self-Image Child Abuse Drug Addiction Empathy ... Survival Summary This is the third novel in Davies's major work, The Deptford Trilogy. While it is not necessary to read the novels in this trilogy in sequence, doing so makes each story more complete and interesting, and clarifies the relationships between some of the characters. This particular novel tells the life story of the unfortunate boy introduced in The Fifth Business, who was spirited away from his Canadian home by one of the members of a traveling side show, the Wanless World of Wonders. Magnus Eisengrim, now a master magician, describes his life as an innocent child who was introduced not only to rape, but to the sad world of the "freak" show, as he traveled throughout his formative years with these unfortunate people. The main good which came out of this was that he developed empathy for the members of the side show, and that he taught himself the skills of magic and became an accomplished magician. A turning point in his life occurred when he got away from this terrible environment and became an understudy for a famous English actor. In emulating this man, he moved on to become a marvelous illusionist.

Canada's Champion of Letters
In one of his last interviews, writer Robertson Davies talks about computers, the Bible, tortured artists, and The Great Canadian Novel. With the publication of the novel Fifth Business in 1970, Robertson Davies - already an accomplished playwright, journalist, and scholar - earned a reputation in literary circles as Canada's greatest writer. A quarter of a century and more than ten major works later, the "Canadian" label began wearing too tightly. In a business that often bestows its highest recognition posthumously, Davies, who died at age eighty-two on December 2, achieved in his lifetime that rare dual triumph of worldwide critical acclaim and commercial success. To readers, Davies spoke with a number of voices - crusty Victorian, satiric wit, learned scholar, flamboyant dramatist, philosophical observer. Always, though, he invested principal characters with two traits, intelligence and curiosity, which drove all his stories. Essential reading for the Davies neophyte is The Deptford Trilogy - a cradle-to-grave story that revolves religion, psychoanalysis, Canadian history, and magic around a mysterious death - but

NUMBER: QUOTATION: If I had my way books would not be written in English, but in an exceedingly difficult secret language that only skilled professional readers and story-tellers could interpret. Then people like you would have to go to public halls and pay good prices to hear the professionals decode and read the books aloud for you. This plan would have the advantage of scaring off all amateur authors, retired politicians, country doctors and I- Married-a-Midget writers who would not have the patience to learn the secret language.
