erasmus darwin Back Best known as the grandfather of the biologist Charles Darwin, Erasmus Darwin was a philosopher, poet, scientist and physician of considerable note. Born in Elston, Nottinghamshire in 1731, he was educated at Chesterfield School and the Universities of Cambridge and Edinburgh. When qualified in medicine he practised briefly in Nottingham before moving to Lichfield in Staffordshire where he soon built up a considerable reputation. He was very well informed on all aspects of late 18th-century science and medicine and had advanced ideas on cosmology and evolution. His originality was prolific and he recorded his ideas in verse of a high quality. Erasmus married twice and produced a very large family many of whom went on to be well known. He moved to Derby and died at Breadsall Priory in 1802. The portrait of Darwin is by Joseph Wright of Derby and the original is in the possession of Darwin College, Cambridge. He was enormously fat, he was talkative, he was witty, he stammered. He was restless, creative, inventive. As a poet he was admired by Coleridge, Wordsworth and the Shelleys; as a botanist he published a theory of evolution sixty years before his grandson, Charles; as a scientist he was the first to propound two of the fundamental laws of gases, to explain how clouds form and how artesian wells work. He fathered fourteen children, including two whilst he was 'between wives' (his first wife having died in childbirth). But all that was just in his spare time; he earned his living as a good, caring and compassionate doctor, tirelessly travelling 10,000 miles a year on the terrible roads of eighteenth century England to attend his patients. Erasmus Darwin was born in 1731 at Elston, near Newark. His father was a lawyer. He was educated at Cambridge and Edinburgh Universities, the latter having at that time the leading medical school in the British Isles. Having tried and failed to establish a medical practice in Nottingham, he moved to Lichfield in 1756. Shortly after his arrival there he saved the life of a young gentleman by means of a novel course of treatment and from then on, the success of his practice was assured. The following year he married Mary (Polly) Howard, by whom he had four sons and a daughter. The youngest of those sons, Robert, was to become Charles Darwin's father. The family moved to a big house on the edge of the Cathedral close in Lichfield, which is now open to the public as the

Note : In order to follow the career of Erasmus Darwin, I found it necessary to tease a chronology out of the various biographies by Desmond King-Hele. The following is the result of this endeavor. Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802) was born 12 December at Elston (near Nottingham). He was the youngest of 7 seven children, 5 sons and two daughters, all of whom survived from 57 to 92 years. His father, Robert Darwin, was a lawyer. His mother, nee Elizabeth Hall, was 20 years younger than her husband and lived to the age of 95. Entered Edinburgh Medical School, the preeminent medical school in Britain, in the Fall. He returned to Cambridge and took the degree of MB (Bachelor of Medicine) in June 1755. Whether Erasmus Darwin did or did not have the formal degree of MD is not known. Attempted to set up medical practice in Nottingham; it failed. In November Erasmus Darwin moved to Lichfield. A few weeks after his arrival, he, with a novel course of treatment, restored the health of a young gentleman whose death seemed inevitable. This insured his success in the new locale. Married Mary Howard (Polly; died 30 June 1770, aged 30). They had 4 sons and one daughter:

William Lloyd Garrison (1805)
It was also on this date, December 12, 1805, that the great American Abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison was born in Newburyport Massachusetts. Apprenticed early on to a printer, he rose to become editor of several journals after becoming involved in the early fight against slavery, a socially destructive institution the churches had long ignored when they did not outright support it. While co-editor of Benjamin Lundy's anti-slavery paper, Genius of Universal Emancipation , Garrison criticized a merchant involved in the slave trade and was imprisoned for libel. He later founded and edited the Boston Liberator owned Garrison never went to church. In the biography written by his children, he is described as a Theist who had "quite freed himself from the trammels of orthodoxy."* Even the Unitarians disliked Garrison. He died on 24 May 1879. It was William Lloyd Garrison who said, "All Christendom professes to receive the Bible as the word of God, and what does it avail?"** William Lloyd Garrison, 1805-1879: The Story of His Life Told by His Children

Erasmus Darwin
Profile
Physician, poet and botanist. Born at Elston Hall, near Newark, Nottinghamshire. His father had been a lawyer, but retired on inheriting the Hall, although money was very tight. Erasmus was educated at Chesterfield, then St. John's College, Cambridge and the Medical School at Edinburgh University. Finding opportunities somewhat limited in Nottingham he set up a medical practice in Lichfield , Staffordshire from 1756. The following year he married Mary (Polly) Howard and they lived in a large house in Beacon Street, at the edge of the Cathedral Close. This is now called Darwin House and is a visitor centre in his honour. He became very successful and was apparently offered a Royal appointment by George III but he decided to stay in Lichfield. The couple raised three sons to maturity, the youngest, Robert becoming the father of Charles Darwin . Mary died in 1770 and Erasmus continued to live in the same house with his sister Susanna, as housekeeper, and Mary Parker, with whom he had two daughters. In 1781 Erasmus married a widow called Elizabeth Pole, and the couple moved to Radburn Hall, near Derby. Erasmus resumed his medical practice and in 1783 founded the Philosophical Society of Derby. It was in this later stage of his life that he found the time and inclination to complete and write his major works. By his second wife he had a further seven children, one of whom was the mother of Sir Francis Galton (1822-1911), scientist and explorer.

Dr. Darwin
Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802). The reference is almost certainly to his last work, The Temple of Nature; or, the Origin of Society: A Poem, with Philosophical Notes , published posthumously in Its cryptic citation in the opening paragraph testifies to the major importance of this work for the conceptual structuring of Frankenstein , particularly in the electromagnetic linkage of the scientific concerns of Victor Frankenstein and Robert Walton, as well as for the conspicuous and strange polar setting of the novel. Although the full text is available, the relevant note is the twelfth in the appendix. What exactly Percy Bysshe Shelley is referring to in this glancing citation of The Temple of Nature is harder to discern. That he knew the work intimately can be discerned by how much its form, as well as its science, contribute to the underlying conception of Queen Mab ) and its two-book redaction published in the Alastor volume in March , " target="_top" The Daemon of the World." In respect to Frankenstein , he is probably thinking of Darwin's notion of creation as occuring from the dynamic interaction of polar opposites in Book I.227ff.

BACK Erasmus Darwin Erasmus Darwin was a physician who graduated from Edinburgh University Medical School in 1756. He became famous as a physician but he was not the first doctor to describe placental transfusion; however, most of his achievements were as a scientist and inventor. He was an accomplished botanist and had many friends among the pioneering scientists of his day, one of whom was Joseph Priestly who discovered oxygen, and performed experiments that proved water to be H 0. It was Erasmus Darwin who introduced the terms "Oxygen" and "Hydrogen" into the English language. He invented a handwriting copier, and devised a speaking machine using a phonetic system with another scientist friend of his, revolutionist Benjamin Franklin. He published a theory of evolution and created a furore similar to that which greeted (fifty years later) his grandson’s (Charles Darwin’s) publication of "The Origin of the Species," a book which revolutionized the science of biology. Erasmus Darwin died 200 years ago this April. A Bicentennial Commemorative Convention is being held at the Erasmus Darwin Centre (his home) in Lichfield, England, April 19-22, 2002. email

Biography of Erasmus Darwin
Darwin, Erasmus. A poet and physician. Born in Elston near Newark in 1731. He studied at Cambridge, obtained a doctor's degree at Edinburgh, and settled at Lichfield as a physician. He was a man of great and varied talent, but some of his opinions were deemed extravagantly eccentric. His "Botanic Garden" was admired as a fine specimen of polished verse, and his "Zoonomia," or "The Laws of Organic Life," was admitted to be ingenious, though built upon an hypothesis which was repudiated as absurd. In 1781 he moved from Lichfield to Derby, where he died in 1802. Web Searches

    - Return to top of the page - Our Assessment: B : entertaining curiosity, very nicely presented See our review for fuller assessment. The complete review 's Review Charles Darwin's grandfather, Erasmus, is not as well-known as he should be. Jenny Uglow's recent book on The Lunar Men (see our review ), and perhaps Desmond King-Hele's own biography (promising: Erasmus Darwin: a Life of Unequalled Achievement ) might help convince readers that the fascinating figure of Erasmus is worthy of their attention. (Better still, of course, would be the re-publication of Erasmus Darwin's own work, but that still seems unlikely.) The publication of this book, the first unabridged edition of the more famous Darwin's biographical work on his grandfather might also help, though it is really more of a literary curiosity than the in-depth introduction Erasmus deserves.
