EVOLUTION
Charles Darwin

One day down. We had auditions again for The Charles Darwin Experience, and a big thank you goes out to all of you that came. You all did a wonderful job, and we hope to see you all again. However, there were 10 of you that did not do a wonderful job... you enlightened us on new ways of thinking, and also made us hungry for subway. I'm not sure what that means, but in anyway, here are the 10 people who did such a good job that we had to call them back. Congrats to:

Historia Haeckel Lamarck Lyell
Charles Robert Darwin

Charles Darwin
Charles Robert Darwin (February 12, 1809 - April 19, 1882), British Naturalist. Charles Darwin developed the first theory of a naturalistic mechanism for evolution, that of natural selection, it explains the diversification of life through a lengthy process of change by adaptation. He was born in Shrewsbury, England, the fifth of six children of Robert and Susannah Darwin ( née Wedgwood), and the grandson of Erasmus Darwin , and of Josiah Wedgwood. After finishing school, Darwin studied medicine in Edinburgh in 1825. His dislike for dissection and the brutality of surgery at the time led him to leave the medical school in 1827. Whilst there, however, he was influenced by the Lamarckian
Based on these thoughts, he formulated his thoughts about the changes and developments of species in his Notebook on the Transmutation of Species , which was in accordance with Lyell 's Principles of Geology and Thomas Malthus' Essay on the Principle of Population , which stated that the size of a population is limited by the food resources available. In 1842, Darwin formulated a short "Pencil Sketch" of his theory and by 1844 had written a 240 page "Essay" which provides an expanded version of his early ideas on natural selection. Between 1844 and 1858, when he would prevent his theory to the Linnean Society of London, Darwin would modify his theory in a number of ways. Darwin married his cousin Emma Wedgwood in 1839. After living for a number of years in London, the couple eventually moved to Downe House, in Downe, Kent (which is now open to public visits, south of Orpington). Darwin and his wife had ten children, three of whom died early. Between 1839 and 1843, Darwin's

God and Science The Hypertext Edition The first edition of God and Science was published in 1986 by John Knox Press. It will appear here in a hypertext format, revised and expanded to encompass more recent developments in both science and theology. In addition, the hypertext edition will be enhanced by graphics, illustrations, and links to websites that will give the reader additional resources to deepen understanding of major themes, names and topics mentioned in the book. As one reviewer wrote about the book, "I could envision myself trying to design a course (around it). ... I think the book has high educational value. I enjoyed reading it to the point that I almost couldn't stop once I had started." (Harry W. Ellis Professor of Physics). I believe that the Internet enhances both the educational value and the enjoyment that may be found in this work. If you'd like to be informed of additional chapters as they appear at this site, or would like to join in conversation both online and in realtime about the topics covered within these pages, please use the Mail Drop below to indicate your interest. Evolution on the Web for Biology Students
The headings on this page correspond roughly to the topics I cover in Principles of Biology II. There is a lot of junk on the web so don't assume that everything you read is true. However, the sites listed here seem to be of high quality. Additional web sites on evolution and ecology can be accessed from my Links page.
Introduction
  • The Talk.Origins Archive contains a wealth of information on evolution and also addresses claims of creationists. Among the articles in this archive are introduction to evolutionary theory . It is long (for a web page), but provides a good supplement to the lecture and text material.
  • Major themes in Evolution is another good overview provided by the National Academy of Sciences. This one has lots of illustrations that you can enlarge by clicking.
  • Keep up with the latest evolution headlines . This page is part of the excellent Richard Dawkins site.
  • A key element in Darwin's argument for evolution was the belief that the Earth was very old. To learn more about the age of the Earth and the different geological periods go to the University of California Museum of Paleontology exhibit on Geological Time
"Nothing in biology makes sense except in light of evolution"
This quote by Theodosius Dobzhansky nicely emphasizes the role of evolution as the most important unifying principle in biology. When we look at nature we may first be struck by the diversity of life. But if we look deeper we begin to appreciate the unity of life as well. This unity reflects the common ancestry of all living things.
