    64. BIBLIO: The Unnamable Samuel Beckett: By Daniel Lindley
ew writers or artists of any kind have offered the world a bleaker portrait oflife than samuel Beckett. daniel Lindley is an associate editor of Biblio.
    http://samuel-beckett.net/309_beckett.html
"Let me say before I go any further that I forgive nobody. I wish them all an atrocious life and then the fires and ice of hell and in the execrable generations to come an honoured name. Enough for this evening." Malone Dies
ew writers or artists of any kind have offered the world a bleaker portrait of life than Samuel Beckett. Beethoven once determined to seize Fate by the throat, it has been claimed; Beckett's characters are simply seized by the throat. Men at one time, if not masters of their fates, at least enjoyed the consolation of cursing God before dying; Beckett's merely curse. He has been called one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century, although his prose, poems, and plays have confused many. One critic compared his style to "translating the rhythms of defecation into sentence structure."
Near the end of his life Beckett characterized his writing as "a Stain upon the silence" and concluded that "there has been nothing else worthwhile." The stain was a nasty one. Physical, mental, and emotional cripples lurch along dark paths toward oblivion, fighting poorly, loving ineptly, misunderstanding almost completely, creaking toward entropy on dilapidated bikes or crutches, living in garbage cans, picking at each other like poultry in a crowded henhouse. Working in the days when it was easier to shock - long before Annie Sprinkle's performance art and Andres Serrano's "Piss Christ" drizzled upon postmodern audiences - Beckett prodded with language at once poetic and obscene, especially when he was younger: Women are "cunts" and "clods," men are lame, listless dopes who float along life's currents with all the resolve and intelligence of drifting phytoplankton.

An English poet and historian, was the son of a music-master, and was born near Taunton, in Somersetshire, in 1562. Another son, John Daniel, was a musician, who held some offices at court, and was the author of Songs for the Lute, Viol and Voice (1606).
In 1579 Samuel was admitted a commoner of Magdalen Hall, Oxford, where he remained'for about three years, and then gave himself up to the unrestrained study of poetry and philosophy. The name of Samuel Daniel is given as the servant of Lord Stafford, ambassador in France, in 1586, and probably refers to the poet. He was first encouraged and, if we may believe him, taught in verse, by the famous countess of Pembroke, whose honour he was never weary of proclaiming. This information is extracted from the book The History of the Town of Hingham Massachusetts, The Genealogies written by George Lincoln, originally published 1893. See the introduction to this site. Comments on this page may be sent to Don Stanwyck LINCOLN - Introduction This surname, variously written Linkhorn, Linklon, Loncon, etc., upon early documents, was a common one in Hingham, Norfolk County, England, for more that a century before our ancestors first came to New England; and the same names which occur here appear quite frequently among the baptisms registered upon the records of St. Andrew's Church in old Hingham. There can scarcely be a doubt, therefore, but that the surname Lincoln originated in Norfolk County, England; while it is more than probable, judging from a recent examination of St. Andrew's Church records, that the place of their abode prior to the seventeenth century, with perhaps one exception, was at old Hingham. Among the earlier settlers of our Hing. were eight persons (males) of mature age bearing this surname, of whom mention is made upon the records of the town. These were, Daniel Lincoln the husbandman, who died unm. 3 Apr. 1644, and his brothers

1:4 On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; 1:5 but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the LORD had closed her womb. 1:6 Her rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the LORD had closed her womb. 1:7 So it went on year by year; as often as she went up to the house of the LORD, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. 1:8 Her husband Elkanah said to her, "Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?" 1:9 After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the LORD. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the LORD. 1:10 She was deeply distressed and prayed to the LORD, and wept bitterly. 1:11 She made this vow: "O LORD of hosts, if only you will look on the misery of your servant, and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male child, then I will set him before you as a nazirite until the day of his death. He shall drink neither wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head."

    Blessed Bernard Scammacca, OP (AC)
Born in Catania, Sicily; died 1486; cultus approved 1825. Born of wealthy and pious parents, Bernard was given a good education. In spite of this good training, he spent a careless youth. Only after he was badly injured in a duel was he brought back to his senses. His long convalescence gave him plenty of time to think, and once he was able to go out of the house, he went to the Dominican convent of Catania and begged to be admitted to the order. Bernard, as a religious, was the exact opposite of what he had been as a young man. Now he made no effort to obtain the things he had valued all his life, but spent his time in prayer, solitude, and continual penance. There is little recorded of his life, except that he kept the rule meticulously, and that he was particularly kind to sinners in the confessional. Apparently, he did not attain fame as a preacher, but was content to spend his time in the work of the confessional and the private direction of souls. One legend pictures Bernard as having great power over birds and animals. When he walked outside in the gardens, praying, the birds would flutter down around him, singing; but as soon as he went into ecstasy, they kept still, for fear they would disturb him. Once, the porter was sent to Bernard's room to call him, and saw a bright light shining under the door. Peeking through the keyhole, he saw a beautiful child shining with light and holding a book, from which Bernard was reading. He hurried to get the prior to see the marvel.

Works Cited Index Reviewed by Samuel Lyndon Gladden D sadeian This reviewer's lengthy focus on Watkins' subject and methodology underscores the anxiety the author himself voices throughout Sexual Power and British Romantic Poetry ; indeed, Watkins admits that his decision to focus on exclusively a few well-known works by canonical writers results from the fact that while he believes his model to hold true for the larger Romantic movement, these familiar and easily accessible texts function as test cases in which his theory may be satisfactorily investigated. Watkins begins with Wordsworth, whose own attitude about political revolution and whose plan for poetic revolution mark him as an important figure to consider in terms of the shifting climates that shaped the early portion of the Romantic age. Focusing on "Tintern Abbey," "Nutting," and the "stolen boat episode" from The Prelude , Watkins argues that Wordsworth's meditations on the self and its place both in the narrow register of individual imagination and in the larger scheme of social relations demonstrate an obsession with emerging subjectivity, which Watkins ties to a cultural and economic shift from feudalism to capitalism. As a member of a developing capitalist society, Watkins argues, Wordsworth struggles to find a place for himself in an increasingly self-made world.
