Making History into Fiction with Newbery Award Winner Karen Cushman
by Wendy Mass K aren Cushman, winner of the Newbery Medal for her 1995 novel The Midwife's Apprentice and recipient of the Newbery Honor for her first book, Catherine, Called Birdy, has captured her audience's attention by recreating Medieval England with contemporary characters. She has always loved history and before becoming an author she worked in the Museum Studies department at JFK University. Her vast knowledge of the past comes to life in her historically set novels. Her latest release, The Ballad of Lucy Whipple, is set during the California Gold Rush; her next project will again transport readers back to the Middle Ages.
