Cushman, Karen: Guldfeber
Cushman, Karen: Guldfeber. CDR, 1999. 176 s. Introduction
This supplemental unit was developed as part of the Schools of California Online Resources for Educators (SCORE) Project , funded by the California Technology Assistance Project (CTAP) and the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association (CCSESA). Catherine, Called Birdy addresses the girl, Catherine, moving into adolescence and her objections to the many rich suitors arranged by her father. It also focuses on Christianity in the Middle Ages. The book is written in diary format to give readers a more personal picture of Catherine. This guide will not only utilize the Internet but will give students, individually or in small groups, the opportunity to read and respond in a variety of ways to a historical fiction book. Through the central theme of daily life in the Middle Ages, students will be able to compare and contrast their lives to a literary character of a similar age. NOTE TO TEACHER: Teachers should be warned that the novel Catherine, Called Birdy

  • Interview With Karen Cushman
Catherine, Called Birdy is my first book. Over the years I've had lots of book ideas. I'd tell my husband and that would be that. This time when I said, "Listen, I have this great idea for a book," he refused to listen. He said, "Don't tell me. Write it down." So I did, and the rest is history. Now I use that story as a metaphor for living when I speak to school classes: It's not enough to have an idea. You have to make a commitment, take a stand, write it down.
  • Karen Cushman Biography
Karen Cushman has no trouble coming up with ideas for books, and no trouble sharing them with her husband. But one day, as she started to tell him about a new idea she had, he handed her paper and pencil and told her this time he wanted her to write it down. What she wrote was the outline for her first book Catherine, Called Birdy (Clarion, 1994), a Newbery Honor Award-winner.
  • Interview with Karen Cushman
For the last four weeks we have been receiving great questions to ask Karen. Because we received so many, it was impossible for her to answer every one, but she has answered most of them. We hope you enjoy the interview, and we hope your question was answered. Once againthanks to all the students, teachers, and fans who submitted such many great questions!

Return to Perspectives Author-Editor Dialogs Karen Cushman and Dinah Stevenson Karen : I never really thought of myself as a particularly lucky person, but it was my great good fortune to be given to Dinah at the very beginning of my writing career. I am still hers. My agent and the late Dorothy Briley, editor in chief of Clarion Books, shared an apartment building in New York. The deal for Catherine, Called Birdy was made in the elevator; Dinah was assigned as my editor. And she is just right. Dinah : You want to know about lucky ? Lucky is when your boss doesn’t have time to look at the manuscript her neighbor handed her in the elevator, and she gives it to you. Reading Karen’s first manuscript, Catherine, Called Birdy , was a breathtaking experience. The manuscript was so polished, so close to perfect, that I was almost afraid to touch it with a pencil. Karen : At first my manuscripts went to Dinah after hundreds of drafts, and editing involved mostly cutting, smoothing, and refining.

RIF: If you could live in any time period, which would it be? Karen Cushman: I don’t think I would change. I have fantasies about living in Greenwich Village in the 1920s or Paris or in some beatnik area in the 1950s. But the more I read about medicine, superstitions, society, food and comfort levels, the more I realize that I’m very lucky to be where I am now. As romantic as it would sound to want to live in the Middle Ages, I think practically I would not change. RIF: Why do you like writing about adolescents? KC: I like reading about that age group. When my daughter was born, we read together. I would always read at her age level, read what she was reading. I stayed there and she moved on. There’d something about becoming and that search for identity and “Who am I?” and what it means to be human in this world and how we define ourselves. All those things seem to speak to me. All of us are trying to figure out who we are and what the world means. The world has branded those as adolescent issues, but I think we all go through them.

    RODZINA
    by Karen Cushman
    Clarion Books
    ISBN: 0618133518
    Ages 10-14
224 pages Rodzina has seen the face of tragedy several times over, and now it seems as if hope has turned its back on this homely immigrant from Poland.
Rodzina and many other orphaned children of all ages are being shipped out of Chicago on a train. They are going west to find new homes and establish new lives. At the time, the powers-that-be believed that working on farms as laborers would be good for these city orphans. Rodzina and many of the other orphans consider this change in circumstances to be a sentence to a life of slavery, and needless to say, Rodzina would rather live in an orphanage or even on the streets than face an existence in a strange place where she has to work in the fields from sun up to sun down day after day. Bitter, sharp and angry, Rodzina isolates herself from everyone else on the train as it clatters west. At each town where the train stops, a few more orphans find homes until Rodzina is the only one left, alone and unwanted.
Carefully researched, RODZINA tells us of a time when orphans were not to be trusted and were often treated little better than slaves or beasts of burden. It was not uncommon for orphans to have their teeth and limbs examined by prospective 'parents' at the time of 'adoption' to determine their worthiness as potential farmhands. In the back of the book, the reader will find a detailed history of the Orphan Train and other similar efforts to 'rehabilitate' orphaned and unwanted children.
