Deutscher Taschenbuch Verlag Autorenportrait Karen Cushman
Was würde ich da tun?

Introduction What was life really like during Medieval Times? What would it have been like to live during the Renaissance? Karen Cushman explores this fascinating period in her awarding winning novels Catherine, Called Birdy Matilda Bone , and The Midwife’s Apprentice Cushman was born in Chicago, Illinois, and she loved to read as a child. She always loved history too and had a fascination with the Medieval Times and Renaissance periods. She once said, “I grew tired of hearing about kings, princes, generals, and presidents. I wanted to know what life was like for ordinary young people in other times.” Her interest led to her writing Catherine, Called Birdy , her first novel. In a later interview, Cushman said she “thinks of the Middle Ages moving into the Renaissance as like a child growing into adolescence. At this point in history, people began to have concerns about identity and concerns about appearance. Men and women began to pay attention to how they looked, and all of a sudden, there were books written about manners. There were also concerns about accountability and privacy. These are some of the same issues that today's adolescents face.” As someone growing into adolescence, what do you think about Cushman’s statement?

    BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Karen Cushman is a new author who writes historical fiction for young adults. Her first book was published in 1994. Her work is fascinating, if you like to read about the Middle Ages. There are several important events, or milestones, in her life. Karen Cushman was born on October 4, 1941 in Chicago, Illinois. Her parents are Arthur and Loretta Lipski. On September 6, 1969, she married her husband Philip Cushman, who is a professor. She has a daughter named Leah. Karen Cushman currently lives in Oakland, California, which is not too far from her editor. (Hedblad, 89: 43) As she grew up, she became very creative. She would pretend to travel around the world as she rode around on her brother's scooter. When she got a little older, she would get "wild passions" about a certain subject and read all there was about that topic. At one point she was determined to teach ballet to her friends, so they would stand next to a car as Karen read to them what they had to do. (Hedblad, 89: 44) Later, she became involved in the Middle Ages, and so came her first two books. Karen Cushman enjoyed learning about the Middle Ages, but when she read summaries for programs about medieval history she was turned off because of the focus on great events, or people, or movements. (Hazel, June 1996: 1700) She liked to learn about how ordinary people lived, not great kings or queens. Karen remembers that she used to have charts of kings and queens on the wall in her room. ("Cushman" AOL) She tried to get a grant to do research on the Middle Ages once, but it did not work. ("Cushman" AOL)

Newbery Medalist Karen Cushman dedicated her first book "to the imagination, hope, and tenacity of all young women," and her novels introduce complex young heroines who possess these very qualities. In diverse historical and social settings, Catherine, Alyce, and Lucy embark on personal journeys to discover who they are and where they belong. In each story historical detail and diction evoke earlier times, yet the human struggles of the characters are timeless. Exploring the Lives of Young People in Other Times

Exploring the Lives of Young People in Other Times These books introduce readers to young women who are facing personal challenges in different historical periods. As students read, ask them to think about what life was like for ordinary young people in the time and place portrayed. You may want to divide the class into groups and assign one of the novels to each. Alternatively, you might assign all three books to the whole class.

When she was younger, Karen Cushman wanted to be a librarian, a movie star, or a tap dancer. Instead, she became a writerbut only after she raised a daughter named Leah and became a teacher. Now, she spends much of her time writing stories about characters who lived long ago. Author of three novels including one which earned a Newbery Award and another a Newbery Honor Award, Cushman hopes to continue writing for the rest of her life. Cushman was born in Chicago, but moved to Oakland, California when she was ten years old. Her feelings about moving became an important inspiration for her latest work, THE BALLAD OF LUCY WHIPPLE . This book describes the life of a young girl who moves west during the gold rush era, a girl reluctant to part with the world she knows. Cushman's other booksCATHERINE, CALLED BIRDY and MIDWIFE'S APPRENTICEboth explore what it might have been like to be a young girl growing up in medieval times. Before she writes her books, Cushman spends much time learning about the historical period in which she sets her stories. Her books show not only how different life was in earlier times, but also how similar many of the experiences are to our own.

    The Lipski children, Christmas,1947.
Future author Karen Cushman, at age 6, holds her first typewriter,
    a gift from Santa Claus.
Karen Cushman was born in Chicago to the Lipskis on Oct. 4, 1941. Her brother (seen here beside her, in a photo from the family album) came along three years later. The family moved to Los Angeles when Cushman was 10. "I was not thrilled with California," said Cushman. "It was too hot. I missed my grandparents, my dog and my public library. Some of those feelings came out forty-some years later in THE BALLAD OF LUCY WHIPPLE."
An avid reader and enthusiastic writer, the young Karen produced her first major work in homage to the "King," an epic poem cycle based on the life of Elvis. She went to Stanford University on a scholarship. For the first time, she said, she realized she "didn’t have to get married, do laundry and spend my life making bologna sandwiches for my kids’ lunches."
Cushman graduated with degrees in Greek and English. She later earned master’s degrees in human behavior and museum studies, at the time not realizing all her schooling would prove especially useful to an award-winning novelist. For 11 years she taught in the museum studies department of a San Francisco Bay Area university, where she sharpened her skills researching the stuff of everyday life in historical eras.

Two of her books are set in the 13th and 14th century England and provide fascinating looks at the very different lives of two young teenage girls of the time. The third, is set during the gold rush period in United States history.
    BIOGRAPHY
Karen Cushman was born in Chicago, Illinois. As a child, she learned about the public library very early. She would go alphabetically down the shelves and try to read every book. In an interview with Alexis O'Neil, she tells of an interest she had at twelve years old in the development of anesthetics. She went through many "big medical books" to find out all about it. Books were always a big part of her life, according to Cushman. "Everything I know I've learned from books. I once set out to learn how to be a ballerina from a book. I mean, to me it was the way. You don't take a class-you get a library book! So, I'd stand in the driveway with my book and practice." From: Alexis O'Neil, pp. 42-43.
