His father's death caused his mother to move to New York in his boyhood, and he was there accepted as an ecclesiastical student by Bishop Dubois , who sent him to the College of the Propaganda at Rome to make his theological studies. He displayed much ability, and after winning his doctor's degree returned to New York , where he was assigned as one of the assistants at St. Patrick's Cathedral. He there proved himself an accomplished linguist, writer, and musician, and an interesting and popular preacher and lecturer. In 1848 Bishop Hughes selected him to found St. Stephen's parish, New York , and to erect a church. Dr. Cummings was then, and had been for several years previously, the intimate friend and disciple of Orestes A. Brownson , the philosopher and reviewer. He was instrumental in having Brownson change his residence from Boston to New York , took charge of his lecture arrangements, and wrote frequent contributions for the "Review". "It was often complained of in Brownson", says his son (Middle Life, Detroit, 1899, p. 132), "that he was lacking in policy, and no doubt he was in the habit of plain speaking; but Cummings was more so, and some of the most violent attacks on the editor and his 'Review' were occasioned by unpalatable truths plainly stated by Cummings".

Cummings printed in the United States from 1985–93. Its scope includes books, chapters in books, reviews of books, periodical articles, encyclopedia and dictionary entries, and doctoral dissertation abstracts, including reprints. The purpose of this bibliography is to provide Cummings scholars with a list of critical works easily obtained through interlibrary loan services at major U.S. universities. To have at our fingertips lists of materials pertinent to our projects saves us valuable research time; to know before obtaining a critical piece the basic ideas that it treats saves us valuable time in not tracking down unneeded material. My intent is obviously not to supplant Guy Rotella’s excellent reference guides (see Spring No. 1, 1992 , and No. 2, 1993 ), but to supplement them. While one will find much overlap in our citations, one will find some references in each that the other failed to uncover. Moreover, the difference in perspective that each of us offers may present readers a more objective survey of the material covered. I have included only those works printed in the United States because they are almost certain to be obtainable. Although Canadian and British criticism, as well as Italian, French, Dutch, Chinese, Japanese, and other international scholarship grows in quality and quantity, it is not always easy to access. One hopes that the electronic revolution will soon change that. In the meantime, while the persistent scholar will certainly find this list inadequate to his or her tasks, I offer it as an aid to those beginning to plumb the Cummings puzzle.

Yet, like poetry itself, when I did I was overtaken in such a way that I do not believe my life will ever be the same. Cummings, as is insultingly obvious, is different. And difference, I believe, is what I didn't like about him...my brain is by nature lazy, just like anybody else's. I didn't want to look at a smoosh of letters and try to derive some sort of weird misunderstood meaning from them. Cummings became the one and only poet I'd ever come in contact with whom I claimed to hate And now, of course, I know better. Sometime in September this year, I got into one of my "withdrawfromtheworldandreadaLOTofpoetry" moods. And who was there to greet me in my American Lit book, who was there to sneer at my face and tease, "I told you so!" in my Anthology of American Literature?
