Burton Cummings Biography
Burton Cummings started his rock and roll career in Winnipeg as a teenager with The Devrons. When Bob Ashley and Chad Allan left the The Guess Who in 1966 Cummings was asked to join as keyboardist and vocalist. Wanting to shake their earlier 'British Invasion' sound, The Guess Who began experimenting with psychedelic and garage sounds filtered north from Minneapolis. They soon began recording there. Eventually, one of the their Minneapolis songs "His Girl" reached England which resulted in interest from Tony Hiller at Mills Music who negotiated a contract with King Records in the U.K. The song, a minor hit in Canada, was remixed and made the Top 20 in England. The band immediately cancelled 6 months worth of gigs and went to England for a tour. King had their course set out for them including where the money went, royalties and retainers and as a result were broke before they began. After one album the Guess Who walked out on King Records. ..read more at Jam! Music

Edward Estlin Cummings is a well-known poet for how he wrote his poems. He wrote his poems in a very unusual way. He wrote poems with capital letters in the middle of words like the title of a poem called, "The little horse newlY". The "Y" is a capital letter. He also signed his poems with lower case letters in his name. Edward was born on October 14, 1894 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Edward's father was also named Edward. Young Edward's mother was named Rebecca. She loved to spend time with her children. She also taught Edward Jr. how to write poems. Edward's sister was born in 1896 and her name was Elizabeth. Edward's father was the first professor of Sociology at Harvard University. He later became the minister of one of Boston's most respected Unitarian Churches. He was the one who taught his son to use his hands as well as his mind. The way Edward Jr. used his hands was by painting abstract art. E.E Cummings was a very smart boy who had many interests. Edward was 12 when he became a freshman in high school. Edward tried abstract art before he wrote poetry. He loved circuses, ballets, operas, ragtime piano bars, amusement parks and symphonies. He also loved the company of young women. Edward graduated from Harvard in 1916. E. E. Cummings was in World War 1. He enlisted so that he would not be drafted and have to fight. In the military, he was sent to France where he drove an ambulance. He and his friend from Harvard were arrested because people thought they were German spies. They were kept in one room where they slept, ate, talked and tried to deal with their fears and boredom. E. E. Cummings wrote his first book, published in 1922, called "The Enormous Room", based on his war time experiences.

Cummings, E. E
Cummings, E(dward) E(stlin) (1894-1962), American poet, who was one of the most radically experimental and inventive writers of the 20th century. A distinctive feature of Cummings's poetry is the abandonment of uppercase letters.
Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Cummings was educated at Harvard University. During World War I (1914-1918) he was an ambulance driver in France, ultimately spending three months in a French military detention camp on a false charge. The experience served as the basis for the autobiographical prose work The Enormous Room (1922). After World War I Cummings studied art in Paris. His first volume of poetry, Tulips and Chimneys, appeared in 1923. During the 1920s and 1930s he lived alternately in France and in the United States, finally settling in New York City.
Cummings's poetic style is characterized by typographical nonconformity; distortions of syntax; unusual punctuation; new words; and a liberal use of jazz rhythms, elements of popular culture, and slang. Because of his style, Cummings's poetry appears complex to the eye, but the ideas expressed through the words and punctuation are often simple. Although the emotional content of his poetry appears at first glance to be cynical, it is basically lyrical and almost romantic, often speaking of the value of love. Cummings followed in the Emersonian tradition (see Ralph Waldo Emerson) of individuality and rejection of conformity.

Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, cummings was educated at Harvard University.
During World War I, he was an ambulance driver in France and was detained for three months in a military detention centre on a false charge.
cummings' experiments with language made his unique work famous. He rejected conforming to society. He saw spaces and capital letters as literary obstacles, and saw little reason to use them. Some of the unconventional techniques cummings employed included omission of lower-case letters, unusual punctuation, unusual and striking imagery, new words, and the use of jazz rhythms and slang.
cummings' work is mainly lyrical and romantic in nature, although it is difficult to ascertain this at first glance given the unusual nature of his work.

T Cummings wasn't going to make college girls swoon like Dan Fogelberg or Jackson Browne, but his knack for melody and powerful voice were well handled by pop producer Richard Perry, who even flew in Paul Buckmaster to arrange the strings. While "Your Back Yard" and "Niki Hokey" were the bouncy pop songs that Guess Who fans had come to expect, it was the four and a half minute anthem "Stand Tall" that became the breakout smash that established him as an artist in his own right. The original record was impeccably produced, although the CD format naturally enhances the clarity of the piano and the vocals, always mixed up front in a Perry production. Demos of "I'm Scared" and "Blossom" are included as bonus tracks. The follow-up record, My Own Way To Rock For Cummings' third record, he took over the production chores himself. Once more, he included recognizable covers that would showcase his voice ("When A Man Loves A Woman", "Hold On I'm Comin") and even reclaimed "Guns Guns Guns" from the Guess Who vaults. The band continued to feature studio hotshots like Dick Wagner, Jim Gordon, and despite his later observations ("there really was no need for a white guy from the prairies ever to cover this Sam And Dave classic, but here it is."), Dream Of A Child went on to win the Juno for the best selling record of the year (1978), and became the first triple platinum release by a Canadian artist. Ironically, the song selection is more scattershot than the previous records, but anyone who pulls out chestnuts by Ray Charles and (here) Bobby Darin as album filler can't be all bad. The bonus tracks, "Sweet Nothins/Wild Child", are solid uptempo rockers.

EE cummings (18941962). Unconventional in every way, the poet Edward Estlin cummings made striking use of grammar and punctuation
    http://poetrytodayonline.com/JUNEcp.html
    June 1998 E.E Cummings
Unconventional in every way, the poet Edward Estlin Cummings made striking use of grammar and punctuationso much so that he often referred to himself as "i" and signed his name in lowercase letters as well: e.e. cummings. His arts were poetry, painting, and drama, and in all of them he was an experimenter and innovator. The poetryfor which he is best rememberedwas marked by bizarre combinations of words and expressions and produced in very strange printing. But the ideas on which his poems were based were the traditional New England values of self-reliance, justice, and dissent. The unusual techniques that Cummings used served to present his ideas more forcefully and effectively than would have been the case with more ordinary styles.
Cummings was born in Cambridge, Mass., on Oct. 14, 1894. He was graduated from Harvard College in 1915 and received a master's degree in 1916. During World War I he served as an ambulance driver in France. He spent six months in a detention camp because of his friendship with another American who had supposedly criticized the Allied war effort. This experience increased his distrust for all officialdom, a distrust that showed itself in many of his later poems as well as in his first book, 'The Enormous Room', published in 1922.
Between the two world wars Cummings divided his time between Paris and New York City. His first book of verse was 'Tulips and Chimneys' (1923). In all he wrote 12 volumes of verse, which were collected in 'Complete Poems' (1968). The strangeness of his style was criticized by some as phony and pretentious, but others found it meaningful despite the difficulties it often posed.
