Edward Estlin Cummings
Quick Bio:
Edward Estlin Cummings was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on October 14, 1894. He earned a BA from Harvard and volunteered to go to France during World War I with the Ambulance Corps. After the war, he stayed in Paris, writing and painting, and later returned to the US. He died in Conway, New Hampshire, in 1962. Cummings is one of the most innovative contemporary poets, though in some ways is oddly traditional. He drops or distorts punctuation and syntax, but at the same time uses rhymes and off-rhymes more characteristic of earlier styles. Cummings published more than nine hundred poems and other works, some listed below. FAQs:
What is cummings' love history?
E. E. Cummings married three times. His first marriage to Elaine Orr (who left her husband for him) lasted only 6 months. His second marriage, to Ann Barton was a stormy, passionate one lasting only a few years. He at last met Marion Morehouse, an actress, model, and photographer, whom he married and lived with for the remaining 30 years of his life.
Does he have any children?

About this selection: yes! We find much to praise in it. But we also complain of omissions. Where is the splendid ballad "darling! because my blood can sing" with its refrain "but if a look should april me"? Where is the exquisite poem "except in your/honour", written in 6-line stanzas of alternating four- and two-syllabics? Where is "my love/ thy hair is one kingdom," a splendour modelled on the Song of Songs? Where is the sonnet beginning "when the proficient poison of sure sleep/ bereaves ...

This is one of the most beautiful combinations of poetry and art. The poem is really quite beautiful. The art is inspirational. I don't knwo that I'd give it to a couple for their wedding though, cause the poem is about a man who is cheating on his wife....So don't take the advice of the other reviewer, the couple might look at you funny!

well, i would have to say that cummings is my absolute favorite poet of all time...and this is a wonderful collection of his best-known works. what i love so much about it is that the editor puts the poems into sections according to their themes. also, the poet's artwork is included frequently. this is definately a great book!

93. Poetry Today Online : Classic Poets: E.E. Cummings
Brief biography, with the text of a single poem.
http://www.poetrytodayonline.com/JUNEcp.html
June 1998 E.E Cummings
Unconventional in every way, the poet Edward Estlin Cummings made striking use of grammar and punctuationso much so that he often referred to himself as "i" and signed his name in lowercase letters as well: e.e. cummings. His arts were poetry, painting, and drama, and in all of them he was an experimenter and innovator. The poetryfor which he is best rememberedwas marked by bizarre combinations of words and expressions and produced in very strange printing. But the ideas on which his poems were based were the traditional New England values of self-reliance, justice, and dissent. The unusual techniques that Cummings used served to present his ideas more forcefully and effectively than would have been the case with more ordinary styles.
Cummings was born in Cambridge, Mass., on Oct. 14, 1894. He was graduated from Harvard College in 1915 and received a master's degree in 1916. During World War I he served as an ambulance driver in France. He spent six months in a detention camp because of his friendship with another American who had supposedly criticized the Allied war effort. This experience increased his distrust for all officialdom, a distrust that showed itself in many of his later poems as well as in his first book, 'The Enormous Room', published in 1922.
Between the two world wars Cummings divided his time between Paris and New York City. His first book of verse was 'Tulips and Chimneys' (1923). In all he wrote 12 volumes of verse, which were collected in 'Complete Poems' (1968). The strangeness of his style was criticized by some as phony and pretentious, but others found it meaningful despite the difficulties it often posed.

Burton Cummings
  • (b. 1947, Winnipeg, Manitoba) BIOGRAPHY Discography Links Photos Burton Cummings started his rock and roll career in Winnipeg as a teenager with The Devrons. When Bob Ashley and Chad Allan left the The Guess Who in 1966 Cummings was asked to join as keyboardist and vocalist. Wanting to shake their earlier 'British Invasion' sound, The Guess Who began experimenting with psychedelic and garage sounds filtered north from Minneapolis. They soon began recording there. Eventually, one of the their Minneapolis songs "His Girl" reached England which resulted in interest from Tony Hiller at Mills Music who negotiated a contract with King Records in the U.K. The song, a minor hit in Canada, was remixed and made the Top 20 in England. The band immediately cancelled 6 months worth of gigs and went to England for a tour. King had their course set out for them including where the money went, royalties and retainers and as a result were broke before they began. After one album the Guess Who walked out on King Records.

    Edward Estlin Cummings
He was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts and educated at Harvard College. Cummings is known for his technique of using lower case letters, shifting grammar and syntax - in other words, he abondonned the tradional techniques and structures in order to create his own hallmark. Thus, the spelling of his name e. e. cummings was done on purpose as well. Indeed, his poetic expressions became quite popular among the young readers - as his witty play on words reverberate throughout his work. In 1930, he wrote a book with no title. Other works include satirical ballet, entitled, Tom Collected Poems Tulips and Chimneys Viva No Thanks 95 Poems, etc. "The most wasted of all days is one without laughter." - ee cummings
