Got an opinion or a question about this article?
Come and talk about it in the spike forum A s camp as Christmas and twice as sparkly, Mr. Quentin Crisp makes his literary return with Resident Alien. Featuring selections from his diaries between 1990 to 1994, Resident Alien describes the hectic social whirl of one "who is in the profession of being." Never refusing an invitation, Quentin lives a life in which he is continually whisked off to all manner of bizarre fringe events in New York and indeed, all over America. It's hard to believe that this man is nearly ninety years old. From attending his own birthday party to recounting the physical agony of dressing up as Queen Elizabeth I for the film Orlando , Quentin's life would give Paul Auster enough material for a score of films.

Quentin Crisp Leaving behind a handful of charmingly written books and a treasure trove of bons mots, the dignified gentleman iconoclast assures himself a fittingly singular immortality.
By Jody Rosen "E ngland," Quentin Crisp was fond of saying, "is a mistake." The writer, performer and self-proclaimed "stately homo of England" was capable of speaking almost entirely in aphorisms, and his arsenal was well-stocked with impish dismissals of his native country, which he fled for Manhattan at age 72. Crisp relished the idea that he would die as he lived unconventionally, and in self-imposed exile. He said he hoped to be dropped in "one of those black plastic bags" and put out with the trash on the streets of his adopted East Village. Crisp would have appreciated the irony that when death finally got him, on Nov. 21 at age 90, he was back in England: not even in London, where he lived for most of his first seven decades, but in gruff Manchester, the heart of England's industrial north, and one of the least fabulous places on earth a cosmic "mistake" if there ever was one. The death of Quentin Crisp represents the end not just of a life but of a lifestyle the subject he claimed as his area of expertise. He titled one of his books "How to Have a Lifestyle"; his one-man show, "An Evening with Quentin Crisp," which was to have opened in Manchester on Nov. 22, was essentially one long lecture on that heady topic. For Crisp, "having a lifestyle" meant living a stylized life. There was artifice in his every gesture and utterance; his entire existence was a performance. He was the late 20th century embodiment of a turn-

But in that year, Quentin Crisp made the courageous decision to "come out" as a homosexual. This exhibitionist with the henna-dyed hair was harrassed, ridiculed and beaten. Nevertheless, he claimed his right to be himselfwhatever the consequences. The Naked Civil Servant is both a comic masterpiece and a unique testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Quentin Crisp, who died at nearly 91 in 1999, is best known for his autobiography The Naked Civil Servant , which was made into a BBC television movie starring John Hurt in 1976, as well as for his role as Elizabeth I in the film Orlando. Something of a latter-day Oscar Wilde, he wrote many other books and critical pieces, performed his An Evening with Quentin Crisp one-man show countless times throughout the world, and I was privileged to know him for seventeen years as agent, friend, collaborator and now champion. Quentin Crisp writes in his stunner of an autobiography The Naked Civil Servant "As soon as I was a few days old I caught pneumonia. I was literally as well as metaphorically wrapped in cotton wool. From this ambience I still keenly feel my exile. When I was well again, I saw that my mother intended to reapportion her love and divide it equally among her four children. I flew into an ungovernable rage from which I have never fully recovered. A fair share of anything is a starvation diet to an egomaniac. For the next twelve years I cried or was sick or had what my governesses politely called an "accident" that is to say I wet myself and worse. After that time I had to think of some other way of drawing attention to myself, because I was sent to a prep school where such practices might not have seemed endearing." Ungovernable rage. Egomaniac. Drawing attention to himself. Wetting himself "and worse." Denis Pratt as Quentin Crisp was first called was one angry little two year old. And (at least judging by his outer trappings) a very different being from the creature he was to reveal to a much greater portion of the world than Denis or Quentin ever dreamed was accessible.

QUENTIN CRISP
(1908-1999) is the author of the classic and flamboyantly eccentric coming-of-age memoir The Naked Civil Servant. The award-winning film version of The Naked Civil Servant made him an instant international celebrity. Crisp also wrote numerous books and articles about his life and his opinions on style, fashion, and the movies. Often hailed as the 20th-century Oscar Wilde, Quentin Crisp was famous for his aphoristic witticisms. He performed his one-man show, An Evening with Quentin Crisp, to acclaim in theaters around the world, all the while spreading his unique philosophy: "Never keep up with the Joneses; drag them down to your level. It's cheaper." During part of the show, Crisp answered questions from the audience and gave advice to audience members about how to find their individual style and live a happy life. He was always in the "profession of being."
Quentin Crisp was Oscar Wilde's perfect descendant. With his calculated caustic words, open homosexuality and wittily provocative attitude toward any kind of conventionality, Crisp caused a bit of a stir in conservative England during the 1950s and 1960s, and even on through the 1970s. In 1981, Quentin Crisp moved to New York City, bringing along his familiar and witty remarks and his eccentricity. Quentin Crisp charmed everyone and became "the face of a modern rebel." Throughout his nearly twenty year tenure on Manhattan, Mr. Crisp wrote a variety of books, reviews, appeared in several movies (most notably playing Elizabeth I in Sally Ann Potter's "Orlando") and otherwise delighted us publicly and privately with his inimitable grace, wit and genius. He died with his (delicately hole-ridden) "boots" on on the eve of touring his one-man show in England in November 1999.

There are three reasons for becoming a writer. The first is that you need the money; the second, that you have something to say that you think the world should know; and the third is that you can't think what to do with the long winter evenings.
The Naked Civil Servant Euphemisms are not, as many young people think, useless verbiage for that which can and should be said bluntly; they are like secret agents on a delicate mission, they must airily pass by a stinking mess with barely so much as a nod of the head, make their point of constructive criticism and continue on in calm forbearance. Euphemisms are unpleasant truths wearing diplomatic cologne.

http://www.goodbyemag.com/jan00/henning.html
Doug Henning: Magician Addled by TM
Doug Henning liked to say that his ambition was to restore a sense of wonder to jaded Americans. There’s little doubt that he did it, even if it was only a sense of wondering why this droopily-mustachioed, diminutive fuzzball was making an elephant disappear instead of toking on a fattie. His goggle-eyed wonderment and gooey narrations were extremely irritating. But what was most interesting about Henning’s life was that he eventually rejected the mechanical production of illusion because he came to believe that people could fly for real, if only their minds could be changed. In 1986 Henning, whose annual specials were still garnering high ratings, quit performing. He rejected his craft, which he had come to call “fake magic” altogether for the “real magic” of Transcendental Meditation. He sold his best tricks to magician David Copperfield and retreated into silence for a few years. It was a shocking move for the man who had done more to publicize magic than anybody since Harry Houdini. Henning had done the master one better by recreating the famous trick of escaping after being handcuffed in a sack inside a padlocked chest. Houdini did it in 20 seconds. Henning did it in less than 10. Houdini was a famous debunker of mystical frauds. But Henning became one and spent the remainder of his life trying to popularize mystical flying in politics and theme parks. He parlayed “The Magic Show” into an annual TV spectacular called “World of Magic.” In his second “World of Magic” special, in 1976, Henning made an elephant disappear and transformed a beautiful girl into Michael Landon. In an unscripted moment, a Bengal tiger escaped backstage and chased talk show host Tom Snyder into a bathroom.

The BBC's Jonathan Ali "Crisp was becoming increasingly frail" real Sunday, 21 November, 1999, 22:58 GMT Quentin Crisp dies Quentin Crisp: Gay icon The flamboyant writer, actor and homosexual rights campaigner Quentin Crisp has been found dead at a house in Manchester. No flowers. No long faces standing around in the rain, staring down into a hole while someone drones on about how wonderful I was Quentin Crisp The 90-year-old great British eccentric, who lived in New York, was taken to the Manchester Royal Infirmary where he was pronounced dead. Police say that there were no suspicious circumstances. Crisp was due to appear at the Green Room theatre in Manchester on Monday in a one-man show which was supposed to then tour the country. A spokesman for the Manchester theatre said the house where Crisp died was owned by "a friend of the theatre". Patrick Newley, Crisp's close friend and press agent throughout most of the 1980s, said he would still be alive if he had not undertaken the tour.

Quentin Crisp
A Stately Old Homo Of England. Born Denis Charles Pratt in Carshalton, England, on Christmas Day, 1908, he suffered a difficult childhood in a then much more homophobic society. Around his late teens, or perhaps his early twenties, he began to accept his sexuality more easily until finally he decided to state it to the world with his mode of dress, trowelled on make-up, long fingernails, and henna'd hair.
Between 'legitimate' jobs he earned money as a male prostitute until he became a nude model for a government supported art school. His autobiography "The Naked Civil Servant" (made into a film starring John Hurt, 1975) gains its title from this time.
