Crashaw, Richard Pronunciation Key Crashaw, Richard , one of the English metaphysical poets . He was graduated from Cambridge in 1634 and remained there as a fellow at Peterhouse until the Puritan uprising, when he fled to the Continent (1643). Though he was the son of an ardent Puritan clergyman, by 1646 he had converted to Roman Catholicism. He served for several years as an attendant to Cardinal Palotto, who finally procured him a minor post at the shrine of Loreto, Italy, in Apr., 1649. Four months later Crashaw died of a fever. Although he wrote secular poetry in Latin and Greek as well as English, his fame rests on his intense religious poetry. His strange mixture of sensuality and mysticism is unusual in English literature and has been compared to the baroque art of Italy and Spain. The principal volume of his work is Steps to the Temple (1646), enlarged to include

RICHARD CRASHAW
CRASHAW, RICHARD Crashaw excelled in all manner of graceful accomplishments; besides being an excellent Latinist and Hellenist, he had an intimate knowledge of Italian and Spanish; and his skill in music, painting and engraving was no less admired in his lifetime than his skill in poetry. Cowley embalmed his memory in an elegy that ran.ks among the very finest in our language, in which he, a Protestant, well expressed the feeling left on the minds of contemporaries by the character of the young Catholic poet: His faith, perhaps, in some nice tenets might Be wrong; his life, Im sure, was in the right: And I, myself, a Catholic will be, So far at least, dear saint, to pray to thee ~ Crashaws works were first collected, in one volume, in 1858 by W. B. Turnbull. In 1872 an edition, in 2 volumes, was printed for private subscription by the Rev. A. B. Grosart. A complete edition was edited (1904) for the Cambridge University Press by Mr A. R. Wailer. (E. G.) CRASH CRASSULACEAE

THE ENGLISH BAROQUE CRASHAW, Richard. Steps to the Temple. Sacred Poems, with other Delights of the Muses ... London, Printed by T. W. for Humphrey Moseley ... 1646. 12mo., pp. [x], 138, [4], without A1 or G12 blanks; headlines on A4 slightly shaved, otherwise a very good copy in nineteenth-century brown morocco neatly rebacked preserving the original spine. First edition. Steps to the Temple is one of the major publications of the 'metaphysical' school of poetry. In it were published for the first time all of Crashaw's best known poems: 'The Weeper', the Divine Epigrams, the poem 'In memory of the Vertuous and Learned Lady Madre de Teresa', and the much anthologized 'Wishes. To his (supposed) Mistresse'. Though devout, and passionately so, Crashaw's sacred poems are at such a pitch of sensuous, often witty, extravagance, and are of such an egregiously Catholic sensibility, that alone amongst major English poets he has earned of critics the epithet 'Baroque'. Wing C 6836; Hayward 82; Wither to Prior I, 202. This item is listed on Bibliopoly by Bernard Quaritch Ltd.

    The Flaming Heart
    (excerpt)
O heart, the equal poise of love's both parts, Big alike with wounds and darts, Live in these conquering leaves; live all the same, And walk through all tongues one triumphant flame; Live here, great heart, and love and die and kill, And bleed and wound, and yield and conquer still. Let this immortal life, where'er it comes, Walk in a crowd of loves and martyrdoms; Let mystic deaths wait on 't, and wise souls be The love-slain witnesses of this life of thee. O sweet incendiary! show here thy art, Upon this carcass of a hard cold heart, Let all thy scatter'd shafts of light, that play Among the leaves of thy large books of day, Combin'd against this breast, at once break in And take away from me my self and sin; This gracious robbery shall thy bounty be, And my best fortunes such fair spoils of me. O thou undaunted daughter of desires! By all thy dow'r of lights and fires, By all the eagle in thee, all the dove, By all thy lives and deaths of love

Crashaw to Crowe Crashaw, Richard Steps to the Temple (1646), consisting mainly of religious poems somewhat in the style of Herbert; his Weeping of the Magdalen is full of the most extravagant conceits, a fondness for which is, indeed, his besetting sin as a poet. His friend Cowley commemorated him in a beautiful ode. Crawford, Francis Marion The Indian Herald (1879-80). Thereafter he settled in Italy, living chiefly at Sorrento, and becoming a Roman Catholic. His principal historical works are Ave Roma Immortalis The Rulers of the South (reprinted as Sicily, Calabria, and Malta , 1904), and Venetian Gleanings (1905), but his reputation rests mainly on his novels, of which he wrote between 30 and 40, the best known of which are perhaps Mr. Isaacs Dr. Claudius A Roman Singer Saracinesca (1890), generally considered his masterpiece, Don Orsino Pietro Ghisleri (1893), and The Heart of Rome (1903). His one play is Francesca da Rimini . His novels are all interesting, and written in a style of decided distinction. His historical works, though full of information, lack spirit. Richard Crashaw
English poet. His first published poetry was in Latin, Epigrammatum Sacrorum Liber [A Book of Sacred Epigrams] (1634). His next collection, published in 1646, was made up of poems in Latin and English, and was divided into a section of religious verse, Steps to the Temple, and one of secular poetry, Delights of the Muses. This book contained his most famous poems, including 'Music's Duel', 'Wishes. To his (supposed) Mistresse', and the poems addressed to St Theresa, 'The Flaming Heart' and the hymn 'Love, thou art absolute sole Lord / Of Life and Death'. An enlarged version of this collection was published three years after Crashaw's death, under the title Carmen Deo Nostro, and incorporated twelve of his own drawings.
