Biography
When Cowper showed signs of returning depression Newton suggested they work together on providing hymns for the weekly meetings. This gesture of friendship resulted in many hymns grounded in prayer and scripture which still give much encouragement and incentive to worship today, two hundred years later, all over the world.

But call it mere hypocrisy and cant
To make a just acknowledgment of praise
And thanks to God for governing our ways,

It is now kept at the Cowper and Newton Museum, Olney. “Oh! with what a surprise of joy,” wrote Newton a few days after Cowper’s death, “would he find himself immediately before the throne, and in the presence of his Lord! All his sorrows left below, and earth exchanged for heaven."

Cowper, William, 1731-1800
Newton, John, 1725-1807
William Cowper, Mary Unwin, and John Newton collection. 1773-1824. 4 manuscripts (3 by Cowper and 1 by Newton) and 4 letters. William Cowper, English poet, was born at his father's rectory at Great Berkhampstead on 15 November 1731. He was educated at Westminster College and called to the bar in 1754. Following a spell of mental instability, bouts of which were to plague him for the rest of his life, he went to live at Huntingdon with the Revd. Morely Unwin, his wife, Mary (b. 1724) and their son William, who by then was away from home. On the death of Unwin, Mary moved to Olney in Buckinghamshire with Cowper. The curate in Olney, John Newton, collaborated with Cowper in the writing of the Olney Hymns (1779) after which he moved to London. Under Mrs. Unwin's influence, Cowper wrote a series of moral satires, published in 1782 as Poems . Mrs. Unwin died on 17 December 1796 while William Cowper lived for a few more years, dying on 25 April 1800.

Cowper, William. The history of John Gilpin, 1829 Cowper, William. The history of John Gilpin. - (Derby: Thomas Richardson, 1829). Exeter Reference Library: Moon 78. When Gilpin's poem first appeared in 1782 it was not designed for the children's market. However, like Pilgrim's progress, Gulliver's travels and Robinson Crusoe it soon became part of the children's repertoire. This version is attractively printed in a large and widely spaced type. The artist has saved himself some trouble by using the same drawing of a horse and rider three times against different backgrounds. Return to the top of the page here.

Cowper, William. Anatomie of humane bodies, 2nd ed, 1737
Cowper, William. Anatomie of humane bodies. - 2nd ed. (Leyden: J. A. Langerak, 1737). Exeter Medical Library: ZZ/COW This work shows the often underhand way in which knowledge was spread. It is in part pirated from Anatomia humani corporis by Godfried Bidloo which was published in Amsterdam in 1685. Building on Vesalius, the work which first appeared in 1698 was illustrated by 105 detailed copperplate engravings by Gerard de Lairesse. Large numbers of sets of these engravings were secretly imported into England and used by Cowper to illustrate his work. Return to the top of the page here.

William Cowper The Odyssey of Homer Introduction "Thou god of our idolatry, the press... Thou fountain, at which drink the good and wise; Thou ever-bubbling spring of endless lies; Like Eden's dread probationary tree, Knowledge of good and evil is from thee. ( The Progress of Error William Cowper, poet and letter-writer, was son of the rector of Great Berkhamstead in Hertfordshire and amother who died when he was only six. After an education at Westminster he trained as a lawyer and was called to the bar in 1754. As a child he was a sensitive individual who suffered at the hands of bullies and began to experience severe depression. Indeed he was so disturbed that he unsuccessfully tried to kill himself at least six times (by poisoning, stabbing and hanging) when faced with an examination for a clerkship at the House of Lords. In fact he later worked there with the help of family connections. His melancholy was worsened by his failure to marry his cousin Theodora Cowper and he had religious visions for the rest of his life, feeling cast from God's mercy. Cowper also spent some time at an 'Insanorum' in St Albans but was kept alive by his interest in evangelical Christianity and the help of the Reverend Morley Unwin with whom he lived as a kind of surrogate son. He wrote Olney Hymns in 1779 and following another suicide attempt while living with Unwin's widow to whom he became engaged he entered a more settled time. He wrote his satires at the turn of the 1780s to be published in 1782 and also some shorter poems along with

William Cowper, "The Snail" (1731)
To grass, or leaf, or fruit, or wall,
The snail sticks close, nor fears to fall,
As if he grew there, house and all
Together. Within that house secure he hides,
When danger imminent betides
Of storm, or other harm besides
Of weather. Give but his horns the slightest touch,
His self-collecting power is such
He shrinks into his house with much
Displeasure. Where'er he dwells, he dwells alone,
Except himself has chattels none, Well satisfied to be his own Whole treasure. Thus hermit-like, his life he leads, Nor partner of his banquet needs, And if he meets one only feeds The faster. Who seeks him must be worse than blind, (He and his house are so combined,) If, finding it, he fails to find Its master.

William Cowper

A self-made man? Yes, and one who worships his creator.
William Cowper

Absence from whom we love is worse than death, and frustrates hope severer than despair.
William Cowper

Absence of occupation is not rest; A mind quite vacant is a mind distressed.
William Cowper
Absence of proof is not proof of absence. William Cowper Acquaint thyself with God, if thou would'st taste His works. Admitted once to his embrace, Thou shalt perceive that thou was blind before: Thine eye shall be instructed; and thine heart Made pure shall relish with divine delight Till then unfelt, what hands divine have wrought. William Cowper Existence is a strange bargain. Life owes us little; we owe it everything. The only true happiness comes from squandering ourselves for a purpose. William Cowper Glory, built on selfish principles, is shame and guilt.
