WILLIAM COWPER COWPER, WILLIAM COWPER , 1ST EARL (c. 1665-1723), lord chancellor of England, was the son of Sir William Cowper, Bart., of Ratling Court, Kent, a Whig member of parliament of some mark in the two last Stuart reigns. Educated at St Albans school, Cowper was called to the bar in 1688; having promptly given his allegiance to the prince of Orange on his landing in England, he was made recorder of Coichester in 1694, r. ~ ,,nfs,or~ rB,,r.-.sn+ ~ ~,,l-,s, for TTsrl-fnr,1 TT~ enjoyed a large practice at the bar, and had the reputation of being one of the most effective parliamentary orators of his generation. He lost his seat in parliament in 1702 owing to the unpopularity caused by the trial of his brother Spencer on. a charge of murder. In 1705 he was appointed lord keeper of the great seal, and took his seat on. the woolsa~kwithoutapeerage. In the following year he conducted the negotiations between the English and Scottish commissioners for arranging the union with Scotland. In November of the same year (1706) he succeeded to his fathers baronetcy; and on the 14th of December he was raised to the peerage as Baron Cowper of Wingham, Kent. Together they wrote many hymns familiar to us today. Cowper suffered from bouts of acute depression. Newton saved him from suicide several times. In fact, because his nervous system was so delicate, he was unable to hold a job. Therefore he spent his time in literary persuits, including writing poetry. His poetry was quite influential. Many people who scorned evangelicals as "Methodists" would read Cowper's poems. He addressed many social issues, such as African slavery, as well as spreading the Gospel. One of Cowper's critics says that Newton was a bad influence, causing him to "indulge and inflame his sensiblity in the dark ecstasies of Calvinism, while at the same time affronting all that was reasonable and humane in his nature." The simplicity of his work and his treatment of natural subjects was in marked contrast to the sophistication of the fashionable Pope; he was an important forerunner of the Romantics, and his unfinished poem 'Yardley Oak' was particularly admired by Wordsworth.
