Add to a Notebook William Cowper The first child of Reverend John Cowper and Ann Donne Cowper, Willam Cowper was born on November 15, 1731, in Berkhampstead, Herefordshire, England. The poet's mother died when he was six and Cowper was sent to Dr. Pittman's boarding school, where he was routinely bullied. In 1748, he enrolled in the Middle Temple in order to pursue a law degree. Shortly thereafter, he fell in love with Theodora Cowper, a cousin. Her father did not approve, and their relationship ended in 1755. Cowper wrote a sequence of poems, Delia , chronicling this affair but the book was not published until 1825. In 1763, through family connections, he accepted a clerkship of the journals in the House of Lords. A rival faction, however, challenged his appointment and the ordeal caused Cowper to enter Nathaniel Cotton's Collegium Insanorum at St. Albans. While there he converted to Evangelicalism. In 1765, he moved to Huntingdon and took a room with the Rev. Morley Unwin and his wife Mary. Unwin died of a riding accident in 1767 and Cowper and Mary Unwin moved together to the town of Olney in 1768. They were not separated until her death in 1796. While at Olney, Cowper became close friends with the Evangelical clergyman John Newton; together they co-authored the Olney Hymns , which was first published in 1779 and included Newton's famous hymn "Amazing Grace." Of the 68 hymns Cowper wrote, "Oh for a closer walk with God" and "God moves in a mysterious way" are the most well known.

    Olney Hymns
    by William Cowper
These hymns were written between 1765 and 1773 at the village of Olney (OHN'ee) where Cowper was under the influence of the Anglican Evangelical preacher John Newton. This was a period of great religious fervor within the Evangelical movement and for Cowper, and this enthusiasm is clear in the poems. Less clear, but still visible, are the lingering affects of the madness which debilitated Cowper in 1762 and to which he again succumbed in 1773. When William Cowper wrote When darkness long has veil'd my mind,
And smiling day once more appears, he spoke from experience. The hymns show Cowper's command of direct, simple language. They also show the clarity of his mind. Each hymn is a little sermon, and most of them are preached more plainly and clearly than any you will hear from the pulpit. Bob Blair

Evidently, these works are an inspiring testimony of a deep and powerful relationship with the Lord, and as such I have felt led to include them. This graceful prose would deem to be Spirit-inspired by one who has tasted depths, heights and breadths of the Kingdom that most of us know little or nothing of in experience. (It would seem to be impossible to write of such things without them being borne out of the personal fiery processings of God). What a manifestation of Love! For further background, see the " Autobiography Of Madame Guyon ".
