Combating the frigid state of academic poetry and prose in 1940s and ‘50s America, Beat Generation writers, guided by self-proclaimed “King-of-the-Beats” Jack Kerouac, sought to render and to be transformed by the “beatific” in life and art. Their work, though carefully grounded in literary tradition, stirred the consciousness of the day with a call to the spontaneous, the provocatively personal, and the lyrical yet vernacular use of language.
Critics of the Beats have often pointed to a self-absorbed, narcissistic content in their writing. Although classics such as Kerouac’s On the Road , Corso’s Gasoline , or Ginsberg’s Howl survived the brutal vituperations of academia, many lesser known Beat creations failed to transcend a focus at once idiosyncratic and egoistic.

He briefly attended the Hanwell Poor Law Institution and afterward joined a traveling vaudeville troupe led by Fred Karno. Karno’s troupe arrived in the United States in 1910 with Chaplin “playing the lead” (Primary Sun) in the pantomime, A Night in an English Music Hall . Mack Sennett, the American director and producer of Keystone comedy fame, recognized Chaplin’s special talent and offered him work in California with the Keystone Company.
During his first year in Hollywood in 1914, Chaplin made thirty-five films and developed what would become the classic bowler-donning, cane-spinning tramp of “world renown” (Primary Sun). By 1918 he was producing his own films, and along with D. W. Griffith, Mary Pickford, and Douglas Fairbanks, Chaplin created United Artists (1919). Chaplin’s “dramatic talent” (Primary Sun) and “inspired vision” (Secondary Uranus) resulted in cinematic works of “brilliance” (Uranus) such as

Don Delillo’s latest novel, Libra is named for the astrological sign characterized by the striving for balance and harmony. The author of End Zone and White Noise has created in Libra what he calls “a work of the imagination” based on the life of Lee Harvey Oswald and the events surrounding President Kennedy’s assassination. Libra was Oswald’s sun-sign, and through the author’s masterly treatment it also serves to symbolize the assassin’s precarious search for balance in American society - a search that ended with his tilting the scales toward the direction of excess and destruction. In a sense, there is nothing new in Delillo’s plot. Elements of many conspiracy theories come together, including the Mafia, anti-Castro forces, and a renegade CIA faction, all with a vested interest in killing the president. What is ingenious is the day-to-day interweaving of character, scene, and setting - the usual challenge of the novel but combined here with an added problem: believably reconstructing scenes involving well-known historical figures. Through Delillo’s intricate descriptions of scenes from various stages from Oswald’s life (e.g., the twelve-year-old Oswald talking with his mother; the older Oswald interacting with his fellow Marines on a naval base in Japan), we come to believe in this strange character who tragically searches for the meaning of his life.

Alfred Lord Tennyson
Alfred Lord Tennyson was the most well known poet of the Victorian Age, an era characterized by its “fantasy / of constraint” (Neptune / Saturn). As we see in his planetary breakdown, Neptune and Saturn were also Tennyson’s key Transcendentals. In his astrocartography both of these planetary lines set over western Europe and the North Atlantic, a few degrees west of England. Tennyson joined a Spanish army faction in 1831 in the insurrection against King Ferdinand VII of Spain, and in this capacity he traveled to the Pyrenees (42N40; 1E00), a site directly under his Primary Neptune line. After his army companion Arthur Henry Hallam suddenly died in 1832, Tennyson imposed a “severe,” ten-year “period of silence” (Secondary Saturn) upon his literary publications. Ten years later, Tennyson achieved recognition as a great poet with the publication of
