Unlikely twins in an unlikely place
By YVONNE CRITTENDEN Toronto Sun
TOMMO AND HAWK
Bryce Courtenay
Bryce Courtenay, a South African now living in Australia, made his name with best-selling novels like The Power Of One and The Potato Factory, the latter about the convict beginnings of Australia. This continues the story of unlikely twin boys, one white, one black, born to a prostitute and raised by a convict woman who has made her fortune in New South Wales in breweries. Tommo and Hawk are grown men, trying to erase the difficulties of their childhoods. Tommo is a small, pugnacious white Cockney, Hawk, huge, black and gentle. They participate in Maori wars in New Zealand, the miners' riots in the Australian goldfields, and all the struggles that beset a new country trying to sort out its identity. As it is now, Australia of this period is confused about its future. Courtenay relates Aussie history as it turns from being a place of convict origins and poor migrant settlers into a multiracial society with differing sets of values. A rich historical yarn.

Matthew Flinder's Cat - Bryce Courtenay
No bids No reserve Closes: Sun, 30 May Starting bid: $ Autobid
Billy O'Shannessy, once a prominent barrister, is now on the street where he sleeps on a bench outside the State Library. Above him on the window sill rests a bronze statue of Matthew Flinders' cat, Trim. Ryan is a ten-year-old, a near street kid heading for all the usual trouble. The two meet and form an unlikely friendship.
Appealing to the boy's imagination by telling him the story of the circumnavigation of Australia as seen through Trim's eyes, Billy is drawn deeply into Ryan's life and into the Sydney underworld. Over several months the two begin the mutual process of rehabilitation.
Matthew Flinders' Cat is a modern-day story of a city, its crime, the plight of the homeless and the politics of greed and perversion. It is also a story of the human heart, with an enchanting glimpse into our past from the viewpoint of a famous cat.

This is what happened.
Before my life started properly, I was doing the usual mewling and sucking, which in my case occured on a pair of huge, soft black breasts. In the African tradition I continued to suckle for my first tow and a half years after which my Zulu wet nurse became my nanny. She was a person madefor laughter, warmth and softness and she would clasp me to her breasts and stroke my golden curls with a hand so large it seemed to contain my whole head. My hurts were soothed with a song about a brave young warrior hunting a lion and a women´s song about doing the washing down on the big rock beside the river where, at sunset, the baboons would come out of the hills to drink.

Talking With
BRYCE COURTENAY
"Audiobooks," Bryce Courtenay told AudioFile, "go back to where stories all began."
At this point, the Australian author is such an inveterate storyteller that he began to tell a story—about telling stories. "It is the gloaming time, and there is a roar of a lion. In front of an early cave, a man by the fire says, ‘This is what happened. . ." Bryce’s impromptu story was full of sounds, colors, and the human voice, and, as he does with his books, he put the listener in the scene, viscerally feeling all the personal and physical elements.
In finishing his story, Bryce continued his expository comments on storytelling. "The voice is more intrinsically honest than the written word." Consequently, Bryce is a huge fan of audiobooks. He is very proud of his audiobooks because they deliver this storytelling in a powerful form.
"The audio versions extend the reach of my books." Before audiobooks were commercially available, Bryce had his books recorded for his neighbors in the remote Yarramalong Valley who do not read. He so wanted to share his books with the nonreaders that he contacted the recording service of the Royal Blind Society. In listening to his books, his neighbors became "part of the intellectual conversation." Bryce has long supported the cause of literacy and delights in the joy of a 60-year-old man who tells him he has "read" his first book. "Audiobooks are tremendous for literacy," Bryce continued. "They are such a gift. They give everyone the opportunity to understand the human condition."

Power of One
- Book Review, by Bryce Courtenay
From Publishers Weekly
Ingram

In this magical novel, an irresistible boy tells the story of his survival and coming of age against the background of South Africa during and just after World War II.
From the Publisher
In the Ballantine publicity department, we have an informal book club. It usually gets started is when one of us reads a book, loves it, and then passes it on to a friend in the department. Once one person has read a book and loves it, then we ALL have to read it too! THE POWER OF ONE by Bryce Courtenay was one of those books. You may have seen the movie with Morgan Freeman, but I urge you to read the book because it was much better than the movie. It's a coming-of-age story of a young boy in South Africa. He has such a hard time of things! He's picked on as a young boy, then he befriends an older man who teaches him the wonders of life. The book is beautifully written, and the story is extremely compelling. If you liked Anna Quindlen's OBJECT LESSONS or Edward Albee's A DEATH IN THE FAMILY or John Irving's A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY, you will love this book too. Jennifer Richards Ballantine Books Publicity Inside Flap Copy "Unabashedly uplifting."

The Fifth Kingdom is indeed an excellent treatment on the fungi kingdom. A lively text makes this topic approachable to most. I would also highly recommend the CDROM Dr. Kendrick has produced to go with the text. Over 3000 colour images and animations have been included which really brings the topic to life. He has placed many of these chapters online at his site mycolog com . I would recommend a visit there to anyone who would like to learn more about either the text or CD.

Book Review- Paddler's Guide to the Sunshine State by Sandy HuffComing from a whitewater paddling background, my first thought on looking at the river descriptions in Huff's book was, "Hm, not very detailed." On further reflection, though, this makes sense. Details of how to run rapids aren't needed in Florida, and the lack of details makes visiting the waterways described much more of a voyage of discovery- as paddling should be. Huff has logically divided her book into three major sections....
