BookList - Roland Green

This brisk and readable fantasy had its origins as an online Prodigy network serial. (Costikyan is a potent figure in the world of fantasy role-playing games, computerized and in other media.) The story straightforwardly uses almost equally straightforward fantasy elements: a young barbarian, Mongoose, who is also the son of a god and his animal companion, Brother (a real mongoose), are launched on a peril-fraught quest requiring both brains and brawn. The writing is entirely satisfactory for the purposes of the story, and its light touch never slips into silliness. The tale's likely to find a large readership among the game-oriented, a respectable one among regular fantasy fans.

Greg Costikyan. First Contract
Review:
Johnson Mukerjii is the president of a successful Silicon Valley enterprise, about to bet the company on a new holographic projector. Then the aliens come, and their super advanced technology knocks the bottom out of Earth's entire high-tech industry. Abruptly bankrupt and on the street, Mukerjii fights back by selling the aliens what they want tat! But there are some problems along the way, not least raising the $25 million, plus travel, during Earth's massive global economic depression, for a small booth at the local Trade Fair, "only" 28 light years away. A mildly amusing and fast-paced look at corporate finagling with an alien twist. There's also a moral when the aliens come, let's not be too quick to trade them our equivalent of Manhattan Island for their equivalent of a handful of glass beads. Rating: 4

Greg Costikyan Finds the Master
Greg Costikyan has picked up on what Ed Heil and I have known for a while – My Life With Master is very cool. Greg’s not approaching the game steeped in narrativist RPGs like Ed and I, which gives him a fresh perspective. Ed linked to it before me, but I think Greg’s taken aback by more than just the fact that MLWM is narrativist. It’s the predetermined structure of the narrative that fascinates him. He conflates the significance of the game’s narrativism and its determinism, though: In a standard RPG, player action is tightly constrained on a moment to moment basis . . . In Master, by contrast, there are no literal constraints on action, on a moment-by-moment basis; there are no systems to resolve the success or failure of actions, so that the only real constraint is gamemaster acquiescence, which is unlikely to be withheld unless you are doing someting inappropriate from the perspective of narrative coherence. On the other hand, the narrative is highly constrained; inevitably, Master will die, and each character will achieve or suffer one of five possible outcomes. Everything but the last sentence is true of any game with a narrative, low-mechanics focus, and will be intimately familiar to fans of games like

Speaking of Greg Costikyan...
Greg posted to his weblog last weekend Dot Boom, a satirical card game of the Dot Com era . He designed the game last year, tried unsuccessfully to sell it, and has just now put it up for our amusement. Players take the role of venture capitalists who fund dubious dotcom enterprises in hopes of taking them public and cashing out before the bubble bursts. Whoever makes the most from IPOs before the inevitable crash is the winner. Even if you have no intention of playing the thing, I recommend you look at the game cards that go with it. They are a hoot and a half. Posted by abostick at May 14, 2003 09:58 AM

An Entry from the Archives
[DG] Micah Jackson: SelfObjects Back to Blog ... [DG] Edward Castronova: Virtual Worlds May 31, 2003 [DG] Greg Costikyan: Games in Crisis Greg is talking about the severe pressure the game industry is under. Development budgets have increased in a Moore-like way but revenues haven't: A game ten years ago cost about $200,000 to produce; now it costs $2M+. App size has gone up two orders of magnitude in just a few years. Most of the costs are for graphic design. I.e., it used to take a one person-day to build. A Doom III level takes 2+ weeks. But the industry feels it has to keep moving up. The audience has no "Indie game" aesthetic. And games are sold to distributors on the basis of brief demos that highlight the graphics. Actual gameplay is too hard to judge to play much of a role in the decisions. And, historically, supporting advanced hardware has increased sales, but (says Greg) that's because the hardware has sucked. Games lose money. And it will get worse. Consequence: The field is driven by mega-hits. Over 89% of sales are generated by thhe top ten games. Publishers will continue to consolidate. And games will be more like other games; the most lucrative approach is to publish a sports game that has minor annual updates. And basing a game on a commercial character (or doing a sequel) reduces the risk. It has to fall into an existing category, with innovation only on the margins. There is interest in independent game development because people are desperate for a hit. Also, mobile games are showing signs of life becausegames mobile platforms require much less develop time.

REFERENCES COLUMNS Science Fiction Summer 2000. The girls were good looking and the stock market was high. High tech was still high profit. We were all going to retire early, live the good life. And then the aliens came, and ruined it all. As 'First Contract' begins, life is sweet for Johnson Mukerjii. He's a go-getter jet setter of the Internet startup generation, and he just about has a hot piece of technology that could make him a bundle. He has all the good things that go with the job a wonderful house, a hot wife and a couple of fast cars. But when those pesky aliens arrive, they bring more than gifts and greetings. They bring ultra-cheap technology. Suddenly, we're the Aztecs and the aliens are the Spaniards. We don't have a hope of competing with them. Mukerjii finds his life going down the toilet at an alarming rate. Costikyan's scenario isn't all doom and gloom, however. Capitalism is a two-edged sword that can be turned against the aliens just as well as it can be used by them. Mukerjii hasn't forgotten how to cut fiscal throats even though he himself has been under the knife. There's more than a bit of a Douglas Adams vibe at work in this novel, and the satire is relieved by some sunnier thoughts. My only regret is that the novel, even in the title, suggests that there would be a follow up. It hasn't come out as yet, which probably means that Costikyan is doing fine in the game business. But if he ever needs a fallback plan, that novelist gig worked out well in 'First Contract'.
