books Remembering a Poet Gregory Corso, 1930–2001 by Patti Smith January 24 - 30, 2001 Gregory Corso making a call in the White Horse Tavern, February 1959. (photo: Fred W. McDarrah) regory Corso, the flower of the beat generation, is gone. He has been plucked to grace the Daddy garden and all in heaven are magnified and amused. I first encountered Gregory long ago in front of the Chelsea Hotel. He lifted his overcoat and dropped his trousers, spewing Latin expletives. Seeing my astonished face, he laughed and said, "I'm not mooning you sweetheart, I'm mooning the world." I remember thinking, how fortunate for the world to be privy to the exposed rump of a true poet. And that he was. All who have stories, real or embellished, of Gregory's legendary mischief and chaotic indiscretions must also have stories of his beauty, his remorse, and his generosity. He took benevolent note of me in the early '70s, maybe because my living space was akin to his—piles of papers, books, old shoes, piss in cups—mortal disarray. We were disruptive partners in crime during particularly tedious poetry readings at St. Mark's. Though we were aptly scolded, Gregory counseled me to stick to my irreverent guns and demand more from those who sat before us calling themselves poets.

Introduction When the Special Collections Department opened its doors in 1969, there was already established the solid beginnings of a manuscript collection. Several members of the English Department had encouraged the purchase of a number of collections, which eventually led toward the establishment of the department. Roger H. Guedalla and George Quasha were among the people who had been instrumental in purchasing a Modern Literature collection, which contained books and manuscripts focusing on the extraordinary group of authors and poets who had been involved with Black Mountain College in North Carolina. Many of these manuscripts are now housed with the Historic and Literary Manuscript Collection (MC 100), and include original materials by Robert Creeley, Charles Olson, and Fielding Dawson. Scope and Content The collection is arranged alphabetically by author and is comprised of 3.6 cubic feet of manuscripts and documents, including single items and small groups of materials of local, national, and world interest (ca. 1819-1989). The folder contents include letters, correspondence, articles, stories, plays, and legal materials.

Abandoned by his Italian mother as an infant, Corso grew up in several foster homes, quit school after sixth grade, and turned to petty crime, eventually getting caught when he was 16, and sentenced to three years in prison. It was in prison where Corso turned to poetry, and found great inspiration in the likes of Marlowe and especially, Percy Bysshe Shelley. Aided by his new friend Ginsberg (ever the relentless promoter of his friends' work), Corso went on to put out several important volumes of poetry in the mid-to-late 1950s, including Gasoline in 1958. Not as prolific as his other three friends, Corso still amassed an admirable body of work by 1970, until he was beset with drug problems, which bogged down his career for years. He didn't put out very much work at all in the last decade of his life, but one poem, which he read at a tribute shortly after Ginsberg's death in 1997, perfectly encapsulated his trademark humor and heart. His poem simply stated, "Toodle-oo".

    (c) 1994 Today's subject: Gregory Corso's Socratic Rap (or, "Gee, Allen, we wuz good lookin' back then, wuzn' we?") Corso's Socratic Rap:
Dateline: Saturday, 11am. Gregory is here, sober, and very with it. When I ran into him on the 4th of July he looked like a 21st Century carpetbagger, or 15th century monk: long linen gown, weird rope-like belt, hair mottled over his sweaty face, wine bottle dangerously wavering, woman wrapped around his arm, speech and index finger somehow balancing his whole body, which stopped to talkarticulate, but unreceptive (thats how it is when you're drunk). The cyclic ironies just never stop, and I'll have to jump back a few grooves so we can skip-stone over the best tracks: Jump a beat back to Naropa, and I'm asking drunken Greg about his kid's name. Gregory's 'Socratic Rap': [We started the morning by people in the audience reciting lines of poetry especially dear to them, and letting Corso riff on them. After 10 minutes or so of this, Corso adjusted his bifoculs and got down to businessvery together, like a hipster professor, or a Lenny Bruce ready for his lecture.] "Ok, here's the

Poet Gregory Corso remembered as brilliant Beat force
Gregory Corso, shown in 1993, was one of the circle of Beat poets that included Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac In this story: A hard youth Meet the Beats Toodle-oo RELATED STORIES, SITES (CNN) Beat poet Gregory Corso is being remembered as brilliant yet untamed master of words. "I would say that he was very gifted, also undisciplined, which is part of the beauty of Beat writing," said Maria Damon, an English professor at the University of Minnesota who once studied under Corso. "He was very well-read but not from formal schooling. He put things together in a highly romanticized way." Corso died Wednesday after a battle with prostate cancer. He was 70. He passed away at the Minneapolis home of his daughter, Sheri Langerman, who announced the death on Thursday.

His mother, sixteen years old when Gregory was delivered, abandoned the family a year later and returned to Italy. Afterwards, Corso spent most of his childhood in orphanages and foster homes. His father remarried when Gregory was eleven years old, and he had his son stay with him, but the boy repeatedly ran away. He was removed to a boy's home, from which he also ran away.
His troubled adolescence included a stint of several months in the Tombs, the New York City jail, for a case involving a stolen radio, and three months of observation in Bellevue. At seventeen, he was convicted of theft and sentenced to Clinton State Prison for three years.

    Gregory Corso
The 21st Century Belongs To Gregory Corso Childhood spent unloved and abandoned by his mother and father. Teenaged years spent jailed in New York for petty theft. 20s and 30s spent starving and writing poetry in the streets of Paris and Venice. Corso "beat" the odds and lived until the ripe old age of 71. He died January 17th, 2001. Gregory Corso was an impish poet of wide respute, a girlfriend stealer of Jack Kerouac, and so immensely devious and lovable that he had the poverty stricken Ginsberg and Bourroughs as his patrons. Young Gregory was sick. Sick on alcohol, sick on junk, sick on love, sick on words, sick on pussy juice, sick on famous surrealists like Marcel Duchamp (literally because Corso puked all over his house and then cut off his necktie with a knife at a party). Corso is a strangely unsung hero of today. Why unsung? My guess is because my generation and the generation that follows me (if I may be so bold) are a bunch of illiterate fuckheads. This doesn't count the Pax Acidus readers, of course. I believe all poetry going forward will owe a debt to him. Why? Because Gregory is the bomb ooh top shop ... contact us
