Paperback - timewarner (2002) First British Edition Little,Brown (2001) Isle of Dogs
The number one bestselling author of Hornet’s Nest
and Southern Cross delivers an irreverent portrait of politically driven law enforcement run amok, with a wry tale of life and turmoil behind the thin blue line.
Chaos breaks loose when the Governor of Virginia orders that speed traps be installed on all streets and highways, and warns that motorists will be caught by monitoring aircraft flying overhead. But the eccentric inhabitants of Tangier, an island fourteen miles off the coast of Virginia in Chesapeake Bay, respond by threatening to secede and set up an independent state, claiming that their independence lies in the history of America’s first settlers, those who set sail from London’s Isle of Dogs in 1607.
Judy Hammer, newly installed as the superintendent of Virginia State Police, and Andy Brazil, state trooper and Hammer’s right-hand confidant, find themselves at their wits’ end as they try to protect the public from the politicians and vice versa in this pitch-perfect, darkly comic romp.

Patricia Cornwell BIO A native of Miami, Florida, Patricia Cornwell attended Davidson College in North Carolina, graduating in 1979 with a B.A. in English. She began working for the Charlotte Observer that year and won an investigative reporting award from the North Carolina Press Association for a series of articles she wrote on prostitution and crime in Charlotte. She spent six years working for the Virginia Chief Medical Examiner's office - first as a technical writer and then as a computer analyst - and also served as a volunteer police officer. It's only fitting (given her background) that Cornwell would create a strong-willed character such as Dr. Kay Scarpetta, Virginia's chief medical examiner. She made her debut in Cornwell's first novel, the internationally acclaimed POSTMORTEM, published in 1990. Cornwell has since written 11 more books featuring Scarpetta, who has had to investigate a number of horrific crimes over the years. The unfortunate victims have included a reclusive writer (BODY OF EVIDENCE, 1991); young couples (ALL THAT REMAINS, 1992); an 11-year-old girl (THE BODY FARM, 1994); and an investigative reporter (CAUSE OF DEATH, 1996). In FROM POTTER'S FIELD (1995), a naked body is discovered in Central Park on Christmas Day, and a sadistic killer is armed with a deadly virus in UNNATURAL EXPOSURE (1997). POINT OF ORIGIN (1998) is about a killer on the loose who nearly destroyed the lives of Scarpetta and those closest to her, and in BLACK NOTICE (1999) a foreign ship arrives in Richmond with an unidentified body on board. Scarpetta confronts one of her most baffling cases in CRUEL AND UNUSUAL (1993), while the medical examiner herself becomes an object of suspicion and criminal investigation in THE LAST PRECINCT (2000).

Patricia Cornwell
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Patricia Cornwell (born June 9 ) is the author of a series of crime novels featuring the fictional heroine Dr. Kay Scarpetta , a medical examiner. She has worked at a crime lab (though not as a criminal investigator, as some have assumed from her ambiguous statements), and procedural details are part of the allure of her novels. She was born Patricia Daniels in Miami, Florida . Her ex-husband is Charles Cornwell. She is a descendant of Harriet Beecher Stowe
Jack the Ripper
Cornwell has been involved in a continuing, self-financed search for evidence to support her theory that painter Walter Sickert was Jack the Ripper . She published Jack the Ripper: Case Closed in 2002 to much controversy, especially within the British art world, where Sickert's work is admired, and also among ripperologists, whom she criticizes as sick and disgusting for their interest in the killings. She contends Sickert had the psychological profile of a killer. She asserts that he was unable to have intercourse because his penis was disfigured at birth or through some accident. The killings coincide with the marriage of Sickert's close friend, which she claims provided the spark which exacerbated his awareness of his purported disabilities and ignited a latent anger.

Born in Florida, Patricia Cornwell was raised there as well as in North Carolina. She graduated in 1979 with a degree in literature and was both a crime reporter as well as worked auditing records in the office of the chief medical examiner of Richmond. The latter post inspired her character Dr. Kay Scarpetta (even if her first book was a 1983 biography of Ruth Graham). Her first novel, Postmortem , is the only novel to have won the Edgar John Creasey Anthony and Macavity awards as well as the Prix du Roman d’Adventure all with the same book. She also won the Gold Dagger for Cruel and Unusual in 1993. Cornwell has also created a second series, a police procedural this time, initially set in Charlotte but with the second book the set has moved to Richmond. In 2002 she published an extremely controversial non-fiction study on Jack the Ripper which is bound to be highly criticized.

About Patricia (Daniels) Cornwell
(photo by John Earle) Patricia Cornwell was born June 9th 1956 in Miami, Florida to Marilyn ("Pat") and Sam Daniels. Her father was an appellate attorney, her mother a secretary. The parents divorced and Marilyn and the three children (Patricia and two brothers) moved to Montreat, North Carolina, when she was seven. Ruth and Billy Graham lived two miles down the road and it was Ruth Graham who once gave her a leather-bound journal and told her to write. She transferred from King College, Tennessee to Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina. After graduating she married her former English professor (Charles Cornwell who is seventeen years her senior) and newly married she started as a reporter for the Charlotte Observer in 1979. Soon she became a police reporter and in 1984 she took a job in the Virginia medical examiner's office. For six years she worked at the morgue, first as a technical writer, then as a computer analyst. She also volunteered to be a city cop and got her first taste of community policing. In 1988 she decided she didn't want to be a preacher's wife and she and her husband divorced in 1989. In 1983 Patricia Cornwell wrote A Time for Remembering (1983), a biography of Ruth Bell Graham, wife of the evangelist Billy Graham. This was her first book and it is hard to find in second-hand book shops (I've seen a less-than-perfect copy offered for $75). A new version: "Ruth, a Portrait: The Ruth Bell Graham Story" was published by Doubleday in September 1997. ISBN: 0385488793

by Shellie Rabago "The Reason my books maintain a certain standard or level, I think, is that I work harder every year for the newest one. I don’t say, ‘Oh well, I’ve hit No.1 on the lists now I can take a vacation.’ If you are going to continue to enjoy what you do and to do a good job you have to work harder as time goes by. The research gets more intensive and more exhausting every year." THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW The fingerprints say the murderer is the man who's just been executed...
At 11:05 one December evening in Richmond, Virginia, convicted murderer Ronnie Joe Waddell is pronounced dead in the electric chair. At the morgue, Dr. Kay Scarpetta waits for Waddell's body. Preparing to perform postmortem before the subject is dead is a strange feeling, but Scarpetta has been here before. And Waddell's death is not the only newsworthy event on this freezing night: the grotesquely wounded body of a young boy is found propped against a garbage dumpster. To Scarpetta the two cases seem unrelated, until she recalls that the body of Waddell's victim had been arranged in a strikingly similar position... Purchase from Amazon
