What do students say?
Summary:
Narrative by protagonist Paul Moreaux, beginning with his childhood during Great Depression Massachusetts to present. Pivots on Paul's discovery that he is a "fader", able to disappear at will. Sundry episodes illustrate the hidden curse of a purported gift. The fade, as well as his undying love for his Aunt Rosanna (hints of incestuous behavior), hampers Paul's chance of ever being a normal and happy adult. Progressive generations possessing the fade (exclusively passed from uncle to nephew) become increasingly malevolent and unhappy, until the climactic showdown between Paul and his uncontrollable nephew, Ozzie. Review: We are unabashed admirers of Robert Cormier's ability to shun the didactic, while grasping the poignant issues that many of us hesitate to articulate. Readers are invited to question their own values. Fade was at one time on a conservative hit list (still is, maybe) as one of those books that mysteriously disappear from library shelves. Each to his own. Of course, I'm not certain that I would be comfortable either, if I knew that my 8th grade daughter was reading about a middle-age shopkeeper performing cunnilingus on a 13 year old girl. Book burning might be considered more egregious, actually.
If one is interested in getting students reading, this novel (geared to young adults and older) will do it, igniting discussion (and disgust) class-wide. Incest; KKK; union scabs; hard times behavior; loneliness; a carefree, single woman (before it was fashionable); murder; psychosis. These are just some of the high points. Above all, R. Cormier invites the reader to rethink the allure of omnipotence.

    Biography
McCall's and the Saturday Evening post . When he published The Chocolate War , his writing career turned around completely, mainly due to the controversy it stirred and the attention it received from young readers. Cormier is aware that his novels shock. He wants them to. "I try to write realistically, even though I knew it would upset some people. The fact is that good guys don't always win in real life...As long as what I write is true and believable, why should I have to create happy endings? My books are an antidote to the TV view of life, where even in the most suspenseful show you know that Starsky and Hutch will get their man. That's phony realism. Life just isn't like that." Cormier urges all aspiring writers to read, read, read, and to write daily; just as athletes must work out daily, so must the writer work out daily. "Talent is not the most important thingdiscipline and dedication are. Craft can be learned, but desire and longing are innate."

    REVIEWS
"As usual, Cormier opens with a scene designed to shock, to draw readers in, compelled to find out what happens next...Cormier has finally come up with the love story he's long said he's wanted to write; however, it's a romance with a difference...The characterizations of Jane, Buddy, and the Avenger are particularly well developed and convincing. Cormier writes with great control here, providingwithin the third-person, nonomniscient narrativean intricate interweaving of alternating viewpoints. While readers may have a broader awareness of what's going on than the individual characters do, there are still elements of surprise and a sense of foreboding that will keep teens turning the pages."
