22. Susan Cooper Biography
susan cooper has been writing for over 30 years. It is, however The Dark Is Rising series which is synonymous with the name susan cooper.
http://www.thelostland.com/biography.htm
Susan Cooper has been writing for over 30 years. In this time she has written numerous newspaper articles, books for children and adults, screenplays for TV, the cinema and a Broadway play. As a writer she is hard to classify, what is universally accepted is that she is a writer with extraordinary gifts. Born in Burnham, Buckinghamshire, England in May 1935, Susan Cooper attended Slough High School before going up to Oxford University. At Somerville College she read English. During her time at Oxford she was the first woman ever to edit the University magazine, Cherwell. After graduating with an MA in English, she began work as a reporter on the Atticus Column of London's The Sunday Times (her first boss was Ian Fleming). She later became a feature writer. Her first books were born during this period. Written after work and at weekends, her first was a so-called science fiction novel, Mandrake. And in response to a publishing house competition for a children's adventure story, Over Sea, Under Stone. In 1963 she left England to marry an American, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and went "rather nervously" to live in the USA. She wrote two more books for adults: a study of America, Behind the Golden Curtain and a biography of J.B. Priestley, Portrait of An Author.

23. Susan Cooper - Interview
A short interview with the author.
http://hosted.ukoln.ac.uk/stories/stories/cooper/interview.htm
The Susan Cooper Interview 1. Who are your favourite children's authors/illustrators? Kenneth Grahame, Arthur Ransome, Alan Garner, Penelope Lively, Jill Paton Walsh, Quentin Blake, Helen Oxenbur, Ursula le Guin, Margaret Mahy, Philippa Pearce, Russell Hoban - and on, and on...... 2. What are your favourite modern children's books? No favourites, but three I specially enjoyed this past year were David Almond's "Skellig", Geraldine McCaughrean's "The Stones Are Hatching", and David Weisner's "Free Fall." 3. What's your favourite place for reading? Sitting on the floor. 4. What's the most unusual place you've read a book in? Up in a small helicopter swooping into the crater of the live volcano Kilauea, in Hawaii. (The book was actually a guidebook - I was trying to look up the date of the last eruption!) 5. What did you want to be when you grew up? A writer. 6. Why did you decide to write/illustrate children's books? See (5). That's why.

(pp. 41-45) Return to SUNY Seminars Country Rambles , Susan Fenimore Cooper wrote, "We Americans...are still, in some sense, half aliens to the country...there is much ignorance among us regarding the creatures which held the land as their own long before our forefathers trod the soil, and many of which are still moving about us, living accessories of our existence, at the present hour" (16). Even a cursory look at Susan Cooper's publishing career reveals her interest in curbing this ignorance; in addition to writing Rural Hours Lawrence Buell has suggested that part of what reveals the difference between Susan and James's environmental visions is Susan's emphasis on the natural world. Buell notes that throughout

I chose this source because it gives background of Susan Cooper's life and how she writes. My other interview talks more about why she used the Arthurian Legend and I thought this one gives a lot of information about how Susan Cooper seees herself as an author. It also talks about recieving fan mail and I thought students might find it interesting to hear what authors think about the letters they recieve from their readers. Interview with Susan Cooper

Return to Susan Fenimore Cooper Notes and Introduction Hugh C. MacDougall
Secretary/Treasurer, James Fenimore Cooper Society "Female Suffrage: A Letter to the Christian Women of America," by Susan Fenimore Cooper, appeared in Harper's New Weekly Magazine , Vol. XLI (JuneNovember, 1870), pp. 438- 446, 594-600. The author is identified only in the Table of Contents, p. v, where she is listed as "Susan F. Cooper." For readers wishing to know the exact location of specific passages, the page breaks from Harper's are identified by a blank line at the end of each page, followed by the original page number at the beginning of the next. The question of "female suffrage" has long been resolved in the United States, andthough sometimes more recentlyin other democratic societies as well. For most people, certainly in the so- called Western world, the right of women to vote on a basis of equality with men seems obvious. A century ago this was not the case, even in America, and it required a long, arduous, and sometimes painful struggle before the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified on August 18, 1920. Why then, take steps to make available through the Gutenberg Project an article arguing AGAINST the right of women to votean article written by a woman?
