Essays on Nature and Landscape. By Susan Fenimore Cooper. Edited by Rochelle Johnson and Daniel Patterson. Athens: University of Georgia Press, 2002. xxxiv + 131 pp. Notes, index. Cloth $45.00, paper $19.95. Susan Fenimore Cooper, daughter of James Fenimore Cooper, wrote and published a novel, essays, and family memoirs in the mid- to late nineteenth century. Well-educated, proficient in four languages, and a keen observer, Cooper used rural and natural history themes for much of her work. Her best known book, Rural Hours , describing a year of life in the Otsego Lake region of New York and originally published in 1850, went through many reprintings; she also published revised editions in 1868 and 1887. Recently, environmental historians and scholars looking at American nature writing have turned again to Cooper's work. Johnson and Patterson, both English professors, edited a new unabridged edition of Rural Hours (Athens: University of Georgia Press, 1998) and some of Cooper's other writings as well as Essays on Nature and Landscape Essays contains a delightful collection of varied Cooper writings beginning with "A Dissolving View," published by George Putman in

The struggle now being waged in the professoriate over which writers deserve canonical status is not just a struggle over the relative merits of literary geniuses; it is a struggle among contending factions for the right to be represented in the picture America draws of itself. (Tompkins 201)
In 1850, with the help of her well-known father, James Fenimore Cooper, Susan Fenimore Cooper published Rural Hours , a natural historical account of one year in the Otsego Lake area of New York state. I mention her father's name in order to situate Susan Fenimore Cooper in literary history, or, more accurately, to position her book in relation to our understandings of literary history. For truthfully, if literary history were faithful to the developments of, and reactions to, literature of the past, Susan Fenimore Cooper's name would be well-known to all scholars of nineteenth-century American literature. Her book was immensely popular both in America and abroad; it went through six printings by 1854, the publication year of Thoreau's

Rural Hours
Susan Fenimore Cooper, Edited and with an Introduction by Rochelle Johnson and Daniel Patterson "An engaging, astutely, sensitively, and eloquently written work by the first really significant American woman nature writer."Lawrence Buell Rural Hours (1850) is one of the earliest pieces of American nature writing and the first by a woman. This new edition, the only printing of the full original text since 1876, restores passages excised by the author for an 1887 edition. The daughter of the novelist James Fenimore Cooper, Susan Fenimore Cooper (1813-1894), uses narratives and descriptions of her walks and excursions to reveal her ideal society as a rural one, carefully poised between the receding wilderness and a looming industrialization. She theorizes that knowledge of place causes people to approach the land humbly and gratefully and asserts the necessity of establishing a society that is sustainable in the natural world and that sees a moral obligation to deepen knowledge of the natural history of the environment. Rochelle Johnson is a doctoral candidate in American literature at the Claremont Graduate University in California. Daniel Patterson is a professor of English at California State University, San Bernardino.

    PREFACE.
THE following notes contain, in a journal form, the simple record of those little events which make up the course of the seasons in rural life. In wandering about the fields, during a long unbroken residence in the country, one naturally gleans many trifling observations on rustic matters which are afterwards remembered with pleasure by the fireside, and gladly shared with one's friends. The following pages were written in perfect good faith, all the trifling incidents alluded to having occurred as they are recorded. It is hoped that some of our friends who, like the honored Hooker, love the country, "where we may see God's blessings spring out of the earth," may find something of interest in the volume. The present edition is a revised one, and some passages not needed to-day have been omitted.

Reared in the wild country round Otsego Lake, New York , on the yet unsettled estates of his father, a judge and member of Congress , he was sent to school at Albany and at New Haven , and entered Yale at fourteen, remaining for some time the youngest student on the rolls. Three years afterwards he joined the United States Navy ; but after making a voyage or two in a merchant vessel, to perfect himself in seamanship, and obtaining his lieutenancy, he married and resigned his commission (1811).
