Staff Report
Focusing on the theme of "Father and Daughter: James Fenimore Cooper and Susan Fenimore Cooper," the 12th International James Fenimore Cooper Seminar is also available as a graduate or graduate course, and some events are open to the public.
Participants in the seminar will study "The Last of the Mohicans" by James Fenimore Cooper, creator of the famous Leatherstocking character and author of more than 40 books.
In addition, participants will read "Rural Hours" by Susan Fenimore Cooper, whose devotion to her father, contributions to ecology and career as a writer have only recently been explored.
Wayne Franklin, a professor at Northeastern University, will deliver the conference's keynote address, which is free and open to the public, at 7:30 p.m. on July 12 in the Alden Room of the Milne Library at SUCO.
Franklin, who is writing a biography of James Fenimore Cooper, will speak on the topic of "Susan Fenimore Cooper and the Construction of Her Father's Reputation."
The seminar will consist of daily lectures and classes by a variety of Cooper scholars. It will also feature a guided walking tour of Cooperstown and visits to historical and cultural sites.

Seminar celebrates Cooper, daughter
By Jill Fahy
Staff Writer
The event has been held every two years since 1976, said Richard Lee, seminar coordinator and assistant professor of English and comparative literature at SUCO.
"We come together not to celebrate a book or an idea, but to celebrate America as it was when it was being founded and to figure out what binds us as Americans," Lee said Tuesday. "It's been a great turnout. Some Advertisement of the most important names in Cooper studies are here."
The theme of this year's conference is "Coming of Age: Gendered Perspectives." James Fenimore Cooper's "The Deerslayer" and Susan Fenimore Cooper's "Elinor Wyllys" are being used for the conference.
Past conference themes tied in with Cooper's work include the frontier, the anti-rent wars, nature and landscape, and the idea of the native.
"People like Cooper because he's not just a reflection of American reality, he's feeding into the culture," Lee said.
Axelrad said the second-ever recorded mention of Santa Claus being tied to the Christmas tradition was in "The Pioneers." Axelrad focused on the development of Christmas as a tradition, emphasizing its importance in Cooper's "The Pioneers."

author, born in Burlington, New Jersey, 15 September 1789; died in Coopers-town, New York, 14 September 1851. On his father's side he was descended from James Cooper, of Stratford-on-Avon, England, who immigrated In 1796 Mr. Cooper determined to make his home permanently in the town he had founded, which by that time promised to become a thriving settlement. He began the construction of a mansion, completed in 1799, which he named Otsego Hall, and which was for many years the manor-house of his own possessions, and by far the most spacious and stately private residence in central New York. To every reader that has fallen under the spell of Cooper's Indian romances, the surroundings of his boyhood days are significant. The American frontier prior to the 19th century was very different from that which exists at present. Then the foremost pioneers of emigration had barely begun to push their way westward through the Mohawk valley, the first available highway to the west.

History Today
Feb, 1996 by Alan Taylor
Twentieth-century readers know the American novelist James Fenimore Cooper as the author of the five `Leatherstocking Tales', including The Last of the Mohicans, set in the North American forest and prairie during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. These novels of frontier violence and adventure helped define the American experience and identity, especially for European readers. Although his narrative voice conveys a powerful self-assurance, James Fenimore Cooper, in fact, became a novelist during the early 1820s at the same time that his inherited estate in New York State collapsed under the weight of unpaid debts and court-ordered foreclosures. Despite a boyish love for `reading novels and amusing tales', he did not begin to write fiction until he was thirty and only after the frustration of his ambitions as a gentleman farmer, frontier landlord, and mercantile investor.

nature writer By Amy Stahl As a literary scholar, it’s not often that Albertson College English professor Rochelle Johnson finds herself peering into trunks containing hidden treasures. Yet two years ago, Johnson opened an aged leather chest filled with letters and manuscripts by 19th century writer Susan Fenimore Cooper. The surprise discovery has given Johnson rich new material for her research into the life of Cooper, one of America’s first female nature writers, the daughter of writer James Fenimore Cooper and the author of a book titled Rural Hours A popular success at the turn of the century yet virtually unknown today, Rural Hours pre-dated Henry David Thoreau’s classic Walden by four years. Rural Hours was such a hit with 19th century readers it went through nine editions yet the full text of the book was out of print for over 100 years. Johnson admits she was unfamiliar with Susan Fenimore Cooper until unexpectedly stumbling across references to the author and Rural Hours in a required text for a graduate class. “I had never heard of her. But I wanted to know who she was because I was very interested in Thoreau.” Further intrigued, Johnson began researching Cooper’s life and work. “Her book went through nine editions,” says Johnson. “I wanted to know who was reading it and what else she wrote.”

ALBERTSON COLLEGE ENGLISH PROFESSOR CO-EDITS NEW BOOK OF ESSAYS ON AMERICA'S FIRST FEMALE NATURE WRITER CALDWELL, ID – Susan Fenimore Cooper, America's first female nature writer, is the focus of a new book of essays co-edited by Albertson College English professor Rochelle Johnson. "Susan Fenimore Cooper: New Essays on "Rural Hours" and Other Works," a compilation of essays by scholars from across the country, was published recently by the University of Georgia Press. Susan Fenimore Cooper, a writer who lived from 1813-1894, is being reintroduced to today's audiences. Though often overshadowed by her celebrity father James Fenimore Cooper, Susan Fenimore Cooper has become recognized as both a pioneer of American nature writing and an early advocate for ecological sustainability. She is the author of "Rural Hours," a popular book chronicling her thoughts about the natural world she observed in 1850 near her home in Cooperstown, N.Y. The full text of "Rural Hours," which pre-dated Henry David Thoreau's best-selling "Walden" by four years, was out of print until 1998, when it was republished. In their recent book, Johnson and co-editor Daniel Patterson have assembled a collection of detailed essays by scholars who critically examine Cooper's work from several perspectives. The essays illuminate Cooper's positions on conservation, religion and women's place in society as well as study her use of various literary devices such as the picturesque, the literary village sketch and domestic fiction.

James Fenimore Cooper
James Fenimore Cooper American novelist, was born at Burlington, New Jersey , on the 15th of September . Reared in the wild country round Otsego Lake, New York, on the yet unsettled estates of his father, a judge and member of Congress , he was sent to school at Albany and at New Haven, and entered Yale at fourteen, remaining for some time the youngest student on the rolls. Three years afterwards he joined the United States Navy ; but after making a voyage or two in a merchant vessel, to perfect himself in seamanship, and obtaining his lieutenancy, he married and resigned his commission (1811). He settled in Westchester County, New York , the “Neutral Ground” of his earliest American romance, and produced anonymously (1820) his first book, Precaution , a novel of the fashionable school. This was followed (1821) by The Spy , which was very successful at the date of issue; The Pioneers (1823), the first of the Leatherstocking series; and
