About the contributors
Table of Contents "Though is has taken over a century, the world, at least the world of literature, is beginning to make something of both Rural Hours and Susan Fenimore Cooper's important position in American letters. [New Essays on Rural Hours and Other Works] is to be commended for its range of diverse inquiries into Cooper's life and work. Certainly, it will encourage old and new readers of Cooper to expand and deepen their scholarship, and perhaps encourage a reassessment of all of those scribbling women of the nineteenth century buried in footnotes and reduced to brief abridgements." Kerry Neville Bakken, New York History "Cooper's several other contributions to the archive of nature writing, like Rural Hours, show striking observational powers along with a rich command of natural history, especially botany and ornithology. . . . All in all, the collection is full of variety and insight." Biography of James Fenimore Cooper
James Fenimore Cooper had a remarkably boring, wealthy existence. His parents were shrewd and ambitious, easily acquiring money and power. Thus he was exposed early on to the finer pleasures of life. The risks of life in the new settlement were not those we usually associate with pioneering. Just the year before, the settlers had almost starved to death. Only William Cooper's influence in the legislature enabled him to get adequate supplies. The Indians, a traditional frontier enemy, were not really a danger. They had been severely beaten in the Revolution; only a few came occasionally to hunt and fish or to sell that townspeople brooms and baskets they had hand-crafted. The memory of their earlier massacres was still powerful, and when James was five a great Indian alarm brought the men out on picket duty. This false alarm was his closest experience to Indian warfare, and from the safe distance of forty years, Cooper would find the whole incident ridiculous. Perhaps this accounts for his comfort with using tons of Indian warfare in his books.

J ames Fenimore Cooper's daughter, Susan, assembled this volume of excerpts, arranged chronologically and individually introduced with essays. According to Susan Fenimore Cooper's recollections, her father wrote important sections of The Last of the Mohicans while deliriously ill. She also details Cooper's difficult search for real native models in an increasingly industrialized area of New England. The overall tone of the work is adoring, but insights are provided on Cooper as a man and as a writer. The book is illustrated from steel and wood engravings from the original illustrations of Cooper's works. The Bible Homer Aristophanes Virgil ... Special Collections Home Page

A Meeting Place by the Water: The Cooper Vision and Inspiration in Otsego County "His spirited gray eye rested a moment on the water…then, turning to me he exclaimed 'I must write one more book, dearie, about our little lake!' Again his eye rested on the water and the banks, with the farseeing look of one evoking imaginary figures to fill the beautiful scene…A few days later the first pages of the Deerslayer were written."
The Cooper name has been tied to the Otsego Lake region for more than ten generations. It is here that a special bond united a family with the land, prompting a vision that inspired a great American literary tradition and fostered the growth of a small village and its surrounding environs. The family patriarch, William Cooper, formed the initial union with the Otsego region. Cooper became a successful land speculator after the American Revolution, acquiring hundreds of thousands of acres in upstate New York. In 1786, he founded the village of Cooperstown at the southern tip of Lake Otsego, moving his wife, Elizabeth Fenimore, and their children there in 1790. William Cooper was also involved in government, becoming the first judge of Otsego County, and later a representative in the United States Congress.
