"My Jesus Is All in All to Me"
Jane Cooper was a leader in early Methodism in England. Some of the men in the Methodist Society criticized her saying that she was stepping beyond her bounds as a woman: they felt she exhorted (preached) when speaking in public gatherings. John Wesley praised her as one was a fine example of Christian discipleship, going as far to say that "she was both a living and a dying witness of Christian perfection. "
A Letter from Jane Cooper, January 15, 1762
Went to Lon..n on Friday to the Meeting. Mr. M..d desired any to Speak who had not before declared the goodness of God. I was convinced I ought to Speak but fear'd I Sh..d bring a reproach upon the Cause of my foolishness. Was tempted to think I sh..d fall down in a fit if I began & that I knew not how to order my Speach aright. But the L..d said "take no thou..t how or what you shall Speak for in that hour it Shall be given you....
The letter is in Sara Crosby, manuscript letterbook, 1760-1774, Perkins Library, Duke University, pp. 111-13. It is quoted in Paul W. Chillcote, She Offered Them Christ : The Legacy of Women Preachers in Early Methodism (Nashville: Abingdon Press, 1993), p. 54.

credit: Sylvia Plachy :: Jane Cooper was born in 1924 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and grew up in Jacksonville, Florida and Princeton, New Jersey. She came early to writing but late to publishing. In the years just following her graduation from college (and the end of World War II) she worked hard on a collection of "war" poems to be called Mercator's World but then took another direction. In 1950 she started teaching at Sarah Lawrence College, where she remained essentially until her retirement in 1987. There, she had the privilege of teaching with Muriel Rukeyser, Grace Paley, Jean Valentine, and others, and the Sarah Lawrence writing program became one of the most distinguished in the country. In 1953-54 Cooper took a year off to get an M.A. at the University of Iowa, where she studied with Robert Lowell and John Berryman.
Cooper's first book, The Weather of Six Mornings , finally appeared in 1969 and received the Lamont Award of the Academy of American Poets. Her other honors have included the Poetry Society's Shelley Award, grants from the Guggenheim and Ingram Merrill Foundations, the NEA, and the Bunting Institute of Radcliffe College, and an Award in Literature from the Academy of American Arts and Letters. In 1995-97 she was State Poet of New York.
Of Scaffolding , her third collection, Grace Paley wrote, "This is a beautiful and stubborn book of poems. The poems say only what they mean. They have about them a great deep patience for the whole truth, a waiting in quietness for tremor and explosion." Reviewing

The Blue Anchor / The Earthquake / Ordinary Detail
The Blue Anchor

The future weighs down on me
just like a wall of light!
All these years
I've lived by necessity.
Now the world shines
like an empty room
clean all the way to the rafters. a bed, a chair, my old typewriter. Or it might be Van Gogh's room at Arles: so neat, while his eyes grazed among phosphorus. A blue anchor. To live in the future like a survivor! Not the first step up the beach but the second then the third the wingprint of the mountain The Earthquake Two people wakened suddenly by an earthquake accuse each other: You pushed me out of bed! The floor is cold, they're disgruntled, they start to laugh. Back to bed. The little hills just beginning to show dark along the horizon fold their paws and shove off to sleep again embracing privacy. But what can I say for the one who sleeps alone? in a child's cot? Another dream?

Selina Cooper , the daughter of Charles Coombe and Jane Coombe , was born in Callington, Cornwall in 1864. Selina's father was a navvy and was away working on a construction job when he died of typhoid fever. Jane, her two youngest children and her seventy-four year old mother were all left destitute by Charles Cooper's death. There was little work in Cornwall so Jane decided to follow the example of two eldest sons, Richard and Charles, and seek work in the textile mills of northern England. Jane Coombe, and her two youngest children, Selina and Alfred, settled in Barnoldswick in 1876. Selina and Alfred soon found work in the local textile mill. Selina, who was now twelve years old, spent half the day in the factory and the other half at school. She was employed as a 'creeler' and it was her responsibility to make sure there was a constant supply of fresh bobbins for the cotton emerging from the card frames. When Selina reached the age of thirteen she was able to leave school and work full-time in the Barnoldswick Mill. Selina received eight shillings for a fifty-six hour week, and this enabled the family to move out of temporary accommodation and rent a small house close to the mill.

Project title: Deformation and mass-transfer processes in carbonate mylonites Supervisors: Dr A. McCaig Dr G. Lloyd Start date: 20th July 1998
End date: 19th July 1998 Funding body: NERC.
Description of project:
Carbonate mylonites occur along many major crustal faults and are known to focus fluid flow in orogenic belts. Calcite also exhibits a wide range of deformation mechanisms from diffusion-assisted grain-boundary sliding to dislocation creep and twinning. Deformation processes in calcite can therefore be used as an analogue for other mineral systems which are less easy to study experimentally. Recent work in the Pyrenees has revealed microzoning patterns in recrystallised calcite grains along the Gavarnie Thrust, emphasizing the importance of mass-transfer processes in carbonate deformation. This studentship will investigate calcite deformation through a combination of field, experimental and SEM studies.

azura skye/jane cooper The Actress Raven-haired, blue-eyed Azura plays Jane Cooper, Jack's fraternal twin who has a quizzical, deadpan sense of humor and an all-consuming interest in the members of the opposite sex, "She is extremely insecure about absolutely everything but passes it off as cool," Skye says succinctly about her character. "I'm more self-confident than she is. She looks up to Zoe and lives through her a little bit." Not a day goes by that Skye does not politely explain that she is no relation to actress Ione Skye. Named for the beautiful blue semiprecious gemstone azurite, Skye has grown up in an entertainment-business family. Her grandfather, Brad Johnson, starred as Sheriff Lofty Craig in the classic 1950s children's western series "Annie Oakley," and her father, an artist and sculptor, builds intricate scale models for such feature films as "Titanic" and the James Bond thriller "Tomorrow Never Dies." Skye began acting in plays and musicals at the age of three. At the age of 11 she toured Los Angeles performing for high school and grade school audiences and went to England, where she studied and trained with professional British stage actors.
