JAMES FENIMORE COOPER
James Fenimore Cooper, whose writing has evoked both admiration and disdain, is considered to be the first true American novelist. His most popular work, The Last of the Mohicans , has remained one of the most widely read novels throughout the world and it, along with the other four novels that make up The Leatherstocking Tales , has tremendously impacted the way many view both the American Indians and the frontier period of American history. The romanticized image of the strong, fearless, and ever resourceful frontiersman (i.e. Natty Bumppo), as well as the stoic, wise, and noble "red man" (i.e. Chingachgook) was borne more from Cooper's characterizations than any other source. James and his brothers roamed and explored what was then a frontier village with a freedom that most children today would find enviable. The wilds of the forests and mountains beckoned the boys and aroused their unrestrained curiosity. The passion for the wilderness which developed in the wandering lads prompted their sister Hannah to write, " They are very wild and show plainly they have been bred in the woods ." It was here in the Hudson River region that James became acquainted with the Indians of central New York state, the art of wilderness survival, the game-bearing Hawkeye prototype who, along with his long rifle and canine companions, visited the Cooper home, and the settlers whose wasteful tendencies disturbed the youth who had fallen in love with the natural beauty of the surrounding wilderness. It was here, during his innocence, the future author developed his sentiments regarding the very things that would later serve as central themes of

About the Author
First major American novelist, best known for his tales of frontier adventure, among them The Last of the Mohicans (1826), an adventure story set in the Lake Champlain. It has been filmed several times, among others in 1936 and 1992. Through his Leatherstocking series Cooper created the archetype of the 18th-century frontiersman, Natty Bumppo. He lives free, close to nature, while the settlers bring 'civilization' that destroys the wilderness. Cooper was born at Burlington, New Jersey, as the son of Quakers, Judge William Cooper and Elisabeth Fenimore Cooper. His father was a representantive of the 4th and 6th Congress, and had attained wealth by developing virgin land. The family moved to Cooperstown, New York, which Judge Cooper had founded. James Fenimore spent his youth partly on the family estate on Otsego Lake. He was educated in the village school at Cooperstown, and in 1800-02 in the household of the rector of St. Peter's. In his junior year Cooper was expelled from Yale because of a series of pranks, which included training a donkey to sit in a professor's chair. Encouraged by his father, Cooper joined the Navy and served on the Sterling, 1806-07. On his return to the United States, he received a warrant as a midshipman. In 1808 he served on the Vesuvius and on the Wasp in the Atlantic in 1809. Upon his father's death in 1809, Cooper became financially independent. He resigned comission in 1811 and married Susan Augusta De Lancey, who was a descendend from the early governors of New York colony.

J ames Fenimore Cooper was America's first successful popular novelist. Son of the prominent federalist William Cooper, founder of the Cooperstown settlement, James was educated at Yale in preparation for a genteel life as a federalist gentleman. After his father's death in an 1809 duel, Cooper quickly squandered his inheritance, and at thirty was on the verge of bankruptcy. He decided to try his hand at writing as a career, carefully modeling his work after Sir Walter Scott's successful Waverley Novels. His first novel, Precaution (1820), a domestic comedy set in England, lost money, but Cooper had discovered his vocation. C ooper established his reputation after his second novel, The Spy , and in his third book, the autobiographical Pioneers (1823), Cooper introduced the character of Natty Bumppo, a uniquely American personification of rugged individualism and the pioneer spirit. Emerson called Pioneers "our first national novel." A second book featuring Bumppo, The Last of the Mohicans (1826), quickly became the most widely read work of the day, solidifying Cooper's popularity in the U.S. and in Europe.

(1789 - 1851), American author, best known for his stories of frontier life and pioneer adventure. His most popular work is The Last of the Mohicans
He was the son of a wealthy, landowning Judge William Cooper, born in Burlington, New Jersey. The year after his birth, the family moved to Cooperstown, New York, a frontier settlement founded by Judge Cooper near Otsego Lake. Sent to Yale at thirteen, Cooper was expelled in his third year and was sent to sea, partly in the merchant marines, and then as a midshipman in the US navy. In 1811, he married Susan DeLancey and settled down as a gentleman farmer.
The first of Cooper's fifty-odd books, Precaution (1820), was a failure, but his second, The Spy (1821), was a patriotic story of the American Revolution and was an immediate success. He and his wife lived abroad from 1826 - 1833, and during this time he vigorously defended American democracy in his writings, but on his return to the United States he was so disgusted by what he saw as the tyranny of the majority, or even mob rule, that he acquired conservative and aristocratic views which made him unpopular as a social commentator.
In 1823, Cooper published

James Fenimore Cooper
America's first literary giant
Cooper lived and wrote in the times between the Revolution and the War Between the States. The LeatherStocking Tales, including his best known book, The Last of the Mohicans , took place in pre-revolutionary America in the thickly wooded North East. What is so appealing to me about these books? While Cooper's narrative requires me to keep a dictionary handy to get through a chapter (quick, what does verdure mean?), his characters speak with innocence and simplicity (if long-windedness). His description of the virgin wilderness of what is now Upstate New York produces a definite wistfulness in me. While most novelists are moving from fifth to fourth grade English in their writings, Cooper's unflinching intellectual presentation of the Colonist and the Indian is refreshing to the educated mind. He presented one of the first reasoned portrayals of the Native American in fiction, and struggled with the morality of colonization, independence, war and Manifest Destiny. His main character represents the faith and veracity of the settler in the character of the wilderness explorer. Cooper's books represent to me an unspoiled America we cannot return to, explored by an ideal character we cannot attain to. His characters achieve difficult goals in circumstances beyond their control. They do so with unerring adherence to their principles.

"Home As Found" is a Web Site dedicated to disseminating information about James Fenimore Cooper on the Internet and the World Wide Web. The name "Home As Found" was suggested to me by Wayne Franklin, when I mentioned that I was planning to construct a Cooper Home Page. I like it not only because it evokes Cooper's novel of 1838 but because it suggests that the visitor shouldn't expect too much order and tidiness in the place; things are likely to be a little chaotic. And so they are.

Biography of James Fenimore Cooper
James Fenimore Cooper had a remarkably boring, wealthy existence. His parents were shrewd and ambitious, easily acquiring money and power. Thus he was exposed early on to the finer pleasures of life. The risks of life in the new settlement were not those we usually associate with pioneering. Just the year before, the settlers had almost starved to death. Only William Cooper's influence in the legislature enabled him to get adequate supplies. The Indians, a traditional frontier enemy, were not really a danger. They had been severely beaten in the Revolution; only a few came occasionally to hunt and fish or to sell that townspeople brooms and baskets they had hand-crafted. The memory of their earlier massacres was still powerful, and when James was five a great Indian alarm brought the men out on picket duty. This false alarm was his closest experience to Indian warfare, and from the safe distance of forty years, Cooper would find the whole incident ridiculous. Perhaps this accounts for his comfort with using tons of Indian warfare in his books.
