One of the brightest of the luminaries who gave up a promising career in government service to fulfill a higher call as a General Authority of the Lord's True Church, the legendary J. Reuben Clark, Jr. is truly a giant among giants. Joshua Reuben Clark, Jr. was born on September 1,1871, in the small farming town of Grantsville, a Mormon settlement thirty-five miles southwest of Salt Lake City. Although he did not begin his formal education until he was ten years old, young Reuben had been home schooled by his mother and had developed a love for learning that lasted his entire life. Although he did not attend high school, young Reuben was accepted at the University of Utah where in 1898 he earned a Bachelor of Science, Summa Cum Laude. He was valedictorian of his class and Student-body President. He served as secretary to another luminary, Elder ( or Doctor, if you find that more impressive)

The 1920s saw a proliferation of chain stores for consumers at all levels of income. The growth of chain stores was aided by the tremendous popularity of the automobile, which greatly increased shoppers' mobility, especially in rural areas. Sears, Roebuck and Company was especially successful in taking advantage of these new market circumstances. In 1895, Sears was a mail-order company catering largely to rural demands for basic goods, but in 1925 it branched out into direct retailing, and by 1929 it operated a chain of 324 stores nationwide. F. W. Woolworth's, whose "five- and ten-cent" variety stores spread across the country by catering to lower-income consumers, was another successful chain; during the 1920s Woolworth's expanded into more and more working-class neighborhoods. Variety stores of this sort sold almost everything except fashions. An anniversary pamphlet, Fifty Years of Woolworth Mail-order buying continued during the 1920s, but the popularity of the new chain stores changed the way consumers shopped. Many documents of the time commented on this change and the problems that accompanied it. Examples in this digital collection include the economist Paul Mazur's pamphlet

CHAPTER 2:
Congress Acts and a Clark Memorial is Assured
(continued) B. The Establishment of a National Commission Legislation is Introduced and Hearings Held Indiana sponsors of a Clark Memorial had always planned to seek and receive Federal support, as well as the creation and participation by other State commissions. Concurrent with legislative action in the Indiana General Assembly, Senator James E. Watson and Representative Will R. Wood, both of Indiana, introduced companion resolutions in the short session of the 69th Congress. They called for establishment of a George Rogers Clark Sesquicentennial Commission and expenditure of Federal funds for a memorial at Vincennes. The legislation was referred to the respective Library Committees of the Senate and House and hearings scheduled. [ The Joint Committee of the Library, with Senator Simeon Fess of Ohio presiding, held several meetings to consider the resolutions. At a public hearing, a number of prominent people appeared before Fess' Committee to urge passage of the concurrent Joint Resolutions. Among those appearing were: Senators James E. Watson and Arthur R. Robinson of Indiana; Representative Will Wood; Chairman Fortune of the George Rogers Clark Commission; Historians Ross Lockridge, J. Franklin Jameson, Elbert J. Benton, Christopher B. Coleman, and Milo M. Quaife; Msgr. Francis H. Gavisk; John C. Doolan, chairman of the Kentucky Historical Society on the George Rogers Clark Memorial; Logan Hay, President of the Lincoln Centennial Association; former Governor A. O. Eberhart of Minnesota; and Joseph B. Kealing, Republican National Committeeman from Indiana. [

Calvin Coolidge Papers
Another major holding of Coolidge papers, with more personal materials, resides at the Forbes Library in Northampton, Massachusetts, in the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Room. Although the presidential papers that remain do not, by and large, include letters, or replies to letters, by Coolidge himself, the material, much of it "case" correspondence sent by ordinary citizens and businessmen to the White House, offers insight into what people were thinking and feeling about economic issues and about Coolidge himself during the decade. In so doing, the letters also provide indirect glimpses of Coolidge as policy-maker. The presidential papers were organized during Coolidge's time in office into "case files," which bear the names of correspondents, government departments and agencies, and issues or concepts that were judged, presumably by the volume or importance of the correspondence, to deserve files of their own. Researchers should look forward to "paging through" the case files for themselves; only a few key documents in each case file have been singled out for annotation in the bibliographic record, to give readers a sense of what they can anticipate finding in the larger file. In addition, "reading copies" of 59 Coolidge speeches, preserved in the Library of Congress in the personal papers of presidential secretary
