Biotechnology - a blessing or a nightmare?

What could the Shroud of Turin, a conservative senator and an entrepreneurial researcher have in common? Politics, religion and bioscience collide in the latest medical thriller form the master story-teller in this field.
Senator Ashley Butler is a quintessential Southern demagogue whose support of traditional American values includes a knee-jerk reaction against virtually all biotechnologies. When he’s called to chair a sub-committee introducing legislation to ban new cloning technology, the senator views his political future in bold relief; and Dr Daniel Lowell, inventor of the technique that will take stem cell research to the next level, sees a roadblock positioned before his biotech start-up.
These two seemingly opposite personalities clash during the senate hearings, yet the men have a common desire. Butler’s hunger for political power far outstrips his concern for the unborn; and Lowell’s pursuit of gargantuan personal wealth and celebrity overrides any considerations for patients’ well-being. Further complicating the proceedings is the confidential news that Senator Butler has developed Parkinson’s disease - leading the senator and the researcher into a Faustian pact. In a perilous attempt to prematurely harness Lowell’s new technology, the therapy leaves the senator with the horrifying effects of temporal lobe epilepsy - seizures of the most bizarre order.

ROBIN COOK Author / Doctor Cook, a medical doctor, is a founding father of the "medical thriller" genre of popular fiction. His 1977 novel Coma was a sensation (and was turned into a film directed by another author/M.D., Michael Crichton ). Cook's many other novels have included Outbreak Vital Signs (1991), and Toxin (1998). His 1999 novel Vector , the fictional tale of bioterrorists spreading anthrax in New York City, foreshadowed the real-life 2001 anthrax attacks in the U.S.

Doctor and author Robin Cook is widely credited with introducing the word "medical" to the thriller genre, and twenty years after the publication of his breakthrough novel, Coma , he continues to dominate the category he created. Cook has successfully combined medical fact with fantasy to produce a succession of New York Times bestsellers, including Outbreak Mindbend Mutation Harmful Intent Vital Signs Blindsight Terminal Fatal Cure Acceptable Risk Contagion Chromosome 6 (1997) and Toxin
In each of his novels, Robin Cook strives to write about the issues at the forefront of current medical practice. To date, he has explored issues such as organ donation, genetic engineering, fertility treatment, in vitro fertilization, research funding, managed care, drug research, and organ transplantation. In VECTOR , Cook explores an issue seemingly ripped from today's headlines bioterrorism.
Cook says he chose to write thrillers because the form gives him "an opportunity to get the public interested in things about medicine they didn't seem to know about. I believe my books are actually teaching people."
Coma was made into a successful feature film, and Cook's novels have also been made into television productions. In December 1993, CBS-TV aired "Robin Cook's Harmful Intent"; in November 1994, NBC-TV aired "Robin Cook's Mortal Fear"; in May 1995, NBC-TV aired "Robin Cook's Virus," based on

BRAIN DRAIN MIGRATION
by Robin Cohen
PLEASE NOTE: Readers wanting to reproduce and reference
this article should contact SAMP Back to PUBLICATIONS The expression 'brain-drain migration' was popularised in the 1960s with the loss of skilled labour-power from a number of poor countries, notably India. Of particular concern was the emigration of those with scarce professional skills, like doctors and engineers, who had been trained at considerable expense by means of taxpayers' subsidies to higher education. It is impossible for political reasons to forbid emigration. This was a strategy closely associated with the repressive regimes in the Soviet Union and East Germany and would not be feasible or acceptable in virtually any country today. What, then, are the possible solutions to the brain drain?
  • Emigration can be delayed . Normally, delay strategies involve some element of public service. For example, doctors may be asked to stay on for two years after their training to 'pay back' what they 'owe' to society. A more sophisticated strategy is to incorporate delay within the training period, thus ensuring that certification follows rather than precedes a spell of public service. (This is the position advanced by South Africa's Minister of Health.) Emigration can be inhibited either in the destination or source countries. The main constraints in the destination countries are the labour market and immigration policies, but at high skill levels another important consideration is the portability of qualifications. Increasingly, this inhibition is falling away as educational franchise operations and international certification expand. Emigration can be inhibited in the source countries by developing special privileges for scarce groups through pay incentives, enhanced research budgets and laboratory and hospital subsidies.

Yes No VIEW RESULTS LONDON, England (CNN) Robin Cook, former UK foreign secretary and leader of the House of Commons, made an impassioned personal statement in parliament following his resignation on Monday. Cook last night won an unprecedented standing ovation after he called on MPs to reject Blair's call for the use of "any means necessary" to disarm Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. The following is the full text of his speech: This is the first time for 20 years that I have addressed the House from the Back Benches. I must confess that I had forgotten how much better the view is from here. None of those 20 years were more enjoyable or more rewarding than the past two, in which I have had the immense privilege of serving this House as Leader of the House, which were made all the more enjoyable, Mr. Speaker, by the opportunity of working closely with you. It was frequently the necessity for me as Leader of the House to talk my way out of accusations that a statement had been preceded by a press interview. On this occasion I can say with complete confidence that no press interview has been given before this statement. I have chosen to address the House first on why I cannot support a war without international agreement or domestic support.

Robin Cook has become the first minister to resign over Iraq Robin Cook has resigned from Tony Blair's cabinet as the build-up to war with Iraq gathers pace. The decision by the House of Commons leader, one of the highest profile figures in the Labour Party, came as the Cabinet held an emergency meeting in Downing Street. The UK, US and Spain have effectively abandoned their efforts to find a diplomatic solution to the stand-off. They are not putting their draft resolution to a vote in the UN Security Council - citing French intransigence. Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott said: "There are only two options left - either Saddam goes into exile or he is disarmed by force." THE LEGALITY OF WAR

  • 40. The Horizon Of Khufu
Giza pyramids layout geometry a symmetrical plan centred on Khafre.
    http://members.surfeu.fi/robin.cook/
THE HORIZON OF KHUFU The Giza pyramids as geometric religious art While many admire the technical achievement, most people today consider pyramids as the ultimately useless products of an autocratic state. Some Egyptologists think they were essentially a means of keeping idle workers busy during the annual Nile inundation. Even so, many aspects of pyramid design and meaning are rather interesting and are discussed on this site. Pyramids are geometric forms so it follows that serious investigation of their purpose requires study of architectural proportion. Unfortunately geometry is not a popular subject, and so bewildering is the array of complex mathematical schemes applied to pyramids (some, I confess, proposed by the present writer) that most scholars have preferred to focus on the cult. The situation changed in 1998 with the publication of H. R. Butler's Egyptian Pyramid Geometry (1). Firmly bedded within the Egyptological corpus, this work examined available pyramid data and identified numerical sets used to proportion monuments through many dynasties. It can well be taken as a standard reference against which to assess other geometrical ideas, and indispensable to anyone wishing to pursue their own investigations. My own work has been somewhat speculative, producing a series of geometrical analyses that now look rather dubious (2). Nevertheless the fragments I found enabled me to reach conclusions not dissimilar to Butler's : Giza was a work of religious art, a 'geometrical symphony' whose proportions must have had symbolic meaning.
