The combination of computer technology, atmosphere regeneration, sensitive sonar equipment, sound quieting, nuclear power, and precision weapons make for a most unusual environment. Imagine working and living in a 300-foot long, 30-foot wide, three-story building with no windows, surrounded by all the highest technology. Then, lock the doors for weeks or months, submerge beneath the surface of an ocean, and travel silently underwater. This requires an unequaled amount of skill, knowledge, and teamwork. Over one hundred crewmembers per Submarine work and live together to defend this country and protect U.S. interests around the world. Being a cook on a submarine is an important job. Despite the tight galley space, submarine crews eat very well... its one of the few benefits of submarine duty. Food for the crew is the bulkiest commodity in a submarine and becomes the limiting factor for patrol duration. Fresh food lasts about two weeks, then it is canned, dried, dehydrated, and frozen food. Subs have several storerooms, a walk in cooler, and a freezer. On long cruises or deployments, however, the amount of food required exceeds storage space. On such runs the cans of food could be stored on the deck and the crew walks on top of them.
