Joseph Conrad
N Nostromo (1904), considerada por muchos críticos como su obra maestra: "un triunfo por el que mis amigos podrán felicitarme como si hubiera salido de una grave enfermedad". Además del esfuerzo de escribir, sobrellevó el sufrimiento que le producía la gota, así como la parálisis de su mujer y los exiguos ingresos que obtenía de su trabajo. La vida en el mar y en puertos extranjeros constituye el telón de fondo de casi todos sus relatos, pero su obsesión fundamental fue la condición humana y la lucha del individuo entre el bien y el mal. Con frecuencia el narrador es un marino retirado -posiblemente el alter ego de Conrad, puesto que algunas de sus novelas se consideran autobiográficas-; ejemplo de ello es su primera obra publicada, La locura de Almayer (1895). Una de las novelas más conocidas de Conrad es Lord Jim (1900), en la que explora el concepto del honor a través de las acciones y sentimientos de un hombre que se pasa la vida intentando expiar su cobardía durante un naufragio ocurrido en su juventud. Otras obras suyas son: El negro del Narcisus (1897), centrada en un marinero negro;

About the Author
Polish-born English novelist and short-story writer. In his famous preface to The Nigger of the 'Narcissus' (1897) Conrad crystallized his often quoted goal as a writer: "My task which I am trying to achieve is, by the power of the written word, to make you hear, to make you feel - it is, above all, to make you see. That - and no more, and it is everything." Among Conrad's most popular works are Lord Jim (1900) and Heart of Darkness (1902). Conrad discouraged interpretation of his sea novels through evidence from his life, but several of his novels drew the material, events, and personalities from his own experiences in different parts of the world. While making his first voyages to the West Indies, Conrad met the Corsican Dominic Cervoni, who was later model for central figures of romantic daring in his fiction. Conrad often fictionalized the historical moments of liberation of the oppressed, but he focused on the colonists, especially those not already committed to liberation. Conrad was born in Berdichev, in the Ukraine, in a region that had once been a part of Poland but was then under Russian rule. His father Apollo Korzeniowski was a poet and translator of English and French literature. As a boy the young Joseph read Polish and French versions of English novels with his father. When Apollo Korzeniowski became embroiled in political activities, he was sent to exile with his family to Volgoda, northern Russia, in 1861.

    http://www.ifrance.com/dossierscinemaetcie/CONRAD JOSEPH.htm

    was born in Berdichev, Ukraine, on December 3rd, 1857. He was born Polish but he would become renowned for his English short stories and novels. His father, Apollo Korzeniowski, worked as a translator of English and French literature, so Joseph had a significant exposure to literature while still a boy.
    Conrad spent the next part of his life sailing all over the world, it was this experience that provided him with material on the exotic locations of many of his novels. He visited Australia, various islands in the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific, South America, and he even sailed up the Congo River in Africa. In 1894 at the age of 36 Conrad finally left the sea behind him and settled down in England. Two years later he married an Englishwoman by the name of Jessie George, and it was with her that he had two sons.
    Even though he was settled down and had a family Conrad still occasionally traveled, but for the most part he just wrote his novels, the first of which
