Wilkie Collins (1824-1889)
Biographical note
English novelist, credited with writing the first mystery. Wilkie (William) Collins was born in London on January 8, 1824. His father (also called William) was a landscape painter, but it seems his father had ambitions for his son outside the arts. Wilkie was first found a place in the tea trade, but displayed no aptitude for commerce. He then studied law at Lincoln's Inn, he was admitted to the bar in 1851 but didn't prosper here either. It was only when he started writing that he seemed to find his vocation. His first published work was written in memory of his father, who died in 1847. Memoirs of the Life of William Collins, Esq., R.A. was published in 1848. He started writing fiction shortly afterwards. Antonina was published in 1850 and Basil in 1852. In April 1852 Wilkie wrote a piece for Charles Dickens' weekly: Household Words . This marked the start of a professional relationship which was to last for ten years, and which left both men better writers for their aqaintence. Wilkie was immensely popular in his time, and wrote 25 novels and over 50 short stories. His most successful works were

His Life
Return to Wilkie Collins Appreciation Page There are a number of Collins biographies. One of the most recent is called "The King of Inventors" by Catherine Peters (thanks to one of my corresponents for this), but I haven't read it yet. The following is culled from a number of sources: William Wilkie Collins was born in London on 8 January 1824, the oldest son of William Collins, RA, a fashionable painter. Collins was named after a friend of the family, Sir David Wilkie, RA. His early career was in commerce, but he then studied law and was actually admitted to the Bar, but does not appear to have practised. He had been writing articles and stories for some time, many of which were published (though apparently anonymously). He also seems to have tried his hand at painting, and in 1848 had a picture exhibited in the Royal Academy. His first major published work was a biography of his father, and the popularity of this book seems to have encouraged him to write seriously for a living. His first novel, Antonina or The Fall of Rome was published in 1850. This was a historical work, along the lines of Bulwer-Lytton's

Wilkie Collins is the only leading Victorian novelist whose letters have not been published. This two-volume edition will thus fill a gaping hole in any assessment of one of the nineteenth century's most loved novelists. It is also extremely timely. Two recent biographies have reassessed his private life and his literary achievements. his best known novels, The Woman in White and The Moonstone, continue to feature on television, and most of his thirty-odd novels are in print. This authorized edition contains more than 2,000 of Collins's letters, Volume I covering those from 1838-1865.

    WILKIE COLLINS
Go straight to Menu 1853 was a quieter year than for the 29 year-old Wilkie Collins. He had no publications out at the turn of the year and his only published work dated 1853 was ' Gabriel's Marriage ' which was published in Dickens's weekly Household Words 16-23 April 1853 and was then pirated in the USA by Littell's Living Age appearing on 28 May. It is a story of poverty, murder, superstition, a death-bed secret, and Christian forgiveness set in Brittany at the time of the persecution of the Catholic religion during the French revolution. It is notable for Wilkie's use of the weather and landscape to set the scene. And perhaps most remarkable to us now for the sentence "The White Women! the grave diggers of the drowned are out on the sea!". In 1856 Wilkie republished it in his collection of short stories After Dark Basil published late in 1852, was going "pretty well" Wilkie wrote in March "our first edition being nearly exhausted. It has been vehemently objected to as immoral by some of those virtuously inflammable ladies and gentlemen of Modern Times...As I have never written for these people and never will, then their condemnation is infinitely more acceptable than their approval." During March, Wilkie was put in touch with the French literary critic Émile Daurand Forgues to whom he sent a copy of Basil . In 1855 Forgues wrote one of the first literary criticisms of Collins's work and later translated two of his books into French.

A Rogue's Life If my father had consulted his means, I should have been sent to a cheap commercial academy; but he had to consult his relationship to Lady Malkinshaw; so I was sent to one of the most fashionable and famous of the great public schools. 4 Volume Set Editors: William Baker Andrew Gasson
Graham Law and Paul Lewis The four volumes of The Public Face of Wilkie Collins bring into one continuous chronological sequence nearly 3000 letters by Wilkie Collins, one of the most successful Victorian writers. They range from the short letter to his mother written in 1831 when Collins was just 7 years old to the last note to his doctor scrawled almost illegibly two days before his death at 65 in 1889. His letters are an essential research tool for anyone studying Victorian fiction – whether from the point of view of its key role in literary development or its central place in publishing history, Victorian theatre or travel, or indeed anyone who just wants a window opened on Victorian England in nearly three quarters of a million wonderful words by one of its key writers.
