Unafraid to question Victorian social mores, Collins never married but maintained two families. He lived both with Caroline Graves (whom he met in a midnight encounter such as is described in The Woman in White), and with Martha Rudd. In later life, Collins became addicted to opium, and from 1870 to his death in 1889, his novels became concerned with social issues, and are considered inferior to his earlier output. However, in recent years, Collins’ oeuvre has received renewed critical attention, a recent biography hailing him as the king of inventors.

Wilkie Collins was the eldest son of William Collins, the celebrated landscape artist. Wilkie, a talented painter who exhibited in the Royal Academy, is best known for his horror story A Very Strange Bed and his novels The Moonstone and The Woman in White. The latter novel was so popular that everything from waltzes to perfume were called Woman in White The sudden meeting in this novel of the hero and the mysterious woman in white was inspired by an incident that occurred to Wilkie as he made his way home with his brother Charles and the painter Millais A woman, dressed all in white approached them claiming to have escaped from a nearby villa in which she had been kept prisoner under mesmeric influenc e. She became Wilkie 's live-in mistress. He also maintained another in a household a few streets away. Here he was known as William Dawson, and fathered three children. Although he had compassionately

The Fiction of Wilkie Collins
The 1863 stage adaptation of No Name, written by W. B. Bernard, with the approval of Wilkie Collins: No Name: A Drama in Five Acts This web site provides accurate texts of the novels and stories of Wilkie Collins (1824-1889). A close friend of Charles Dickens, Collins is one of the most readable (and surprisingly modern) of the Victorian novelists. Most of the works here are based on the New York Collier edition of 1900 , and are thus in the public domain. I have silently corrected obvious misspellings and typographical errors; however, no attempt has been made to force the spelling to conform either to British standards or to American ones. Plain text versions of many of these works have been donated to Project Gutenberg. The texts of Wilkie's most famous novels, The Woman in White and The Moonstone are available offsite. The short novel The Haunted Hotel is also offsite. With these three exceptions, this web site contains the complete fiction of Wilkie Collins, as well as the letters Charles Dickens wrote to Collins. http://www.2020site.org/literature/william_collins.html
Biography Of William Wilkie Collins
WILLIAM WILKIE COLLINS, an English novelist, was born in London, January, 1824. His father, William Collins, was an eminent artist, and his mother was also talented in art. He was educated in a private school, then spent several years in Italy. For four years he was in the employ of a mercantile firm, but left this for the study of law. In 1848 he published "Memoirs of the Life of William Collins." In 1850 appeared his first novel, "Antonina." Then followed "Rambles Beyond Railways," "Basil;" "Mr. Ray's Cash Box;" "Hide and Seek;" "After Dark;" "The Dead Secret;" "The Queen of Hearts;" "No Name;" "The Woman in White;" "My Miscellanies;" "Armadale;" "The Moonstone;" "Man and Wife;" "Poor Miss Finch;" "New Magdalen;" "The Law and the Lady;" "Two Destinies;" "The Haunted Hotel;" "The Fallen Leaves;" "Jezebel's Daughter," and "The Black Robe."
His novels are most skillfully written, entertaining, and absorbing. Many of them are translated into other languages. Always a hard worker, he continued his arduous literary labors, in spite of ill health, until within a short time previous to his death, which occurred in 1889. He was a great friend of Charles Dickens. His brother married Miss Kate Dickens, daughter of the novelist, in 1860. < Great authors of 19th century literature >

hether an allusion is explicit or indirect , its effectiveness depends upon its being sufficiently well- known that the intended audience will recognize its meaning and its suitability in context. According to M. H. Abrams, "Most allusions serve to illustrate or enhance a subject, but some are used in order to undercut it ironically by the discrepancy between the subject and the allusion" (8-9). Writing before the fashion changed and allusions became deliberately private and obscure, as in the poetry of T. S. Eliot, Wilkie Collins employed allusions to the lost Franklin Expedition and Richard Brinsley Sheridan's comedy of manners The Rivals (1775) in order to add breadth to the action, to intensify the suspense, and to comment on the characters in his sensation novel No Name Just as in the opening chapter of A Tale of Two Cities (1859) Charles Dickens characterizes the chronological setting of his story through a series of evocative historical allusions to events as well known as the 1774-5 Continental Congress in the American colonies and to personages as little known as the visionary Joanna Southcott, so in

Wilkie Collins's "A Terribly Strange Bed" (1852): Reading Questions
Philip V. Allingham , Contributing Editor, Victorian Web; Faculty of Education, Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, Ontario
Wilkie Collins, The Nineteenth-Century "King of Sensation," was born 8 January 1824, and died on 23 September 1889. He has been variously called "The Author of "Make 'em cry, make 'em laugh, make 'em wait" Books; "The Inventor of the Sensation Novel"; and "The Dickensian Ampersand." William Wilkie Collins, the elder son of a popular landscape painter (William Collins, R. A., of Cavendish Street, London) was born on 8 January 1824. In fashionable Bayswater, young Collins attended the Maida Hill Academy prior to two years of travelling with his parents in Italy. At a private boarding school in Highbury, Wilkie Collins later recalled, he got his start as an author, for under threats from the class bully he "learnt to be amusing on short notice" (Michell vi). Upon leaving school in 1840, he worked for Antrobus and Company, tea importers, but found himself totally unsuited to the tedium of business life. Instead, he preferred to write stories and "escape to the vibrant atmosphere of Paris" (Michell vi). At age 22, he became a law student at London's Lincoln's Inn; called to the bar in 1851 (the same year in which he first met novelist

About the Author
English novelist, whose unconventional private life and determination to tackle social issues disconcerted his audience. Many of Wilkie Collins's novels contain sympathetic portraits of physically abnormal individuals. Critics often credit Collins with the invention of the English detective novel. While he was aware of the work of Poe and Gaboriau, he worked in the mainstream of Victorian domestic and social fiction. Sergeant Cuff from Collins's novel The Moonstone (1868) became a prototype of the detective hero in English fiction. Wilkie Collins was born in London. His father was William Collins, a well-known landscape painter, and mother Harriet (Geddes) Collins, the daughter of a painter. They were a devoted couple, and young Wilkie grew with his brother in a secure household. However, Collins never outgrew his childhood sickliness, he was small and had a slightly deformed skull. Collins was educated privately, he studied painting for several years. At the age of eleven he began attending school, but at the end of the year the family moved to Italy, where William Collins studied the old masters. After nearly two years abroad, the family returned to England. With the help of his father, Collins found work in the office of a tea importer (1841-46). During this period he started to write fiction. Collins' first story. "The Last Stagecoachman" was published in 1943. He studied then law without much enthusiasm and worked industriously on his first novel
