http://www.anglik.net/wilkiecollins.htm
Wilkie Collins William Wilkie Collins, or Wilkie as he was known to his friends and readers, was born in London's Marylebone where he lived more or less continuously for 65 years. Today he is best known for The Moonstone (1868), often regarded as the first true detective novel, and The Woman in White (1860), the archetypal sensation novel. During his lifetime, however, he wrote over thirty major books, well over a hundred articles, short stories and essays, and a dozen or more plays. He lived an unconventional, Bohemian lifestyle, loved good food and wine to excess, wore flamboyant clothes, travelled abroad frequently, formed long-term relationships with two women but married neither, and took vast quantities of opium over many years to relieve the symptoms of ill health. Collins's circle of friends included many pre-eminent figures of the day. He knew the major writers, particularly Charles Dickens with whom he regularly collaborated, as well as a host of minor novelists. His friends and acquaintances included some of the foremost artists, playwrights, theatrical personalities, musicians, publishers, physicians and society figures of the time. Collins's unorthodox lifestyle reveals a cynical regard for the Victorian establishment. This view is reflected in his books together with a sense of humour and a profound understanding for many of the then prevailing social injustices. PAGE UNDER CONSTRUCTION!

Many of Wilkie Collins' novels contain sympathetic portraits of physically abnormal individuals. Critics often credit Collins with the invention of the English detective novel. While he was aware of the work of Poe and Gaboriau , he worked in the mainstream of Victorian domestic and social fiction. Sergeant Cuff from Collins' novel THE MOONSTONE (1868) became a prototype of the detective hero in English fiction. Dorothy L. Sayers has called it "probably the very finest detective story ever written." "Good night, Mr. Betteredge," he said. "And mind, if you ever take to growing roses, the white moss rose is all the better for not being budded on the dog rose, whatever the gardener may say to the contrary!"
"What are you doing here?" I asked. "Why are you not in your proper bed?"

Collins, (William) Wilkie Collins, (William) Wilkie (1824-89), English writer, often regarded as the originator of detective fiction. He was born in London. Unsuccessful at business and law, he preferred to write. In 1851 he began a close association with Charles Dickens, with whom he collaborated on the novel No Thoroughfare (1867). Collins's mystery thriller The Woman in White (1860) and the detective story The Moonstone (1868), which first appeared in periodicals edited by Dickens, are considered masterpieces of their respective genres. In both, although the greatest emphasis is placed on the construction of a plot designed to baffle the reader, characterization is also important. The vivid portrayal of Sergeant Cuff in The Moonstone is the first study in English fiction of a detective actually at work. Among Collins's other works are travel sketches, the historical romance

COLLINS, (William) Wilkie
Born: January 8, 1824, in London, England Died: September 23, 1889, in London, England Collins was an English writer accredited with creating the first detective fiction. His father was William Collins, a significant British landscape painter and pious man. Young Collins was educated in private schools and toured in Italy with his family from 1836-1838. Although he was called to the bar he never practiced, and neither did he succeed at business. His first literary work, a romantic history entitled Antonia or the Fall of Rome and inspired by Bulwer-Lytton, was not very successful either. In 1851 however he began writing for, assisting, and traveling with Charles Dickens, who published some of Collins' work in his journal Household Words . They also collaborated on the work No Thoroughfare , published in 1867. Dickens enjoyed employing the techniques of clues and false clues that Collins inspired, and in turn Collins developed a good sense for character development in his own work. Collins' best known texts
