Collins, William
25 December 1721 - June 1759
Another member of the Graveyard School , Collins was influenced by his friend and fellow boneyard boy Joseph Warton and by James Thomson , another Graveyarder. Collins began publishing poetry in his late teens and spent much of his life struggling to succeed as a writer. His major publication, Odes on Several Descriptive and Allegorical Subjects (1746), met with little success; Collins' work was out of the poetic mainstream in its exploration of more powerful emotional and psychological effects. Quite possibly afflicted with some sort of mental instability later in life (perhaps depression), Collins was largely forgotten by the time of his death. But the changing cultural currents of the late C18 turned in his favor; he came to be romanticized (by the Romantics, appropriately enough, especially Hazlitt and Coleridge) as a "mad poet" whose early death was itself poetically tragic; Collins also was widely understood to be, in his work, a precursor of many Romantic traits. As for his contributions to the Graveyard School, some of the odes linked below will explain....

He wrote The Woman in White (1860), often called the first English detective fiction novel, and The Moonstone (1868) (with Sergeant Cuff, one of the first detectives in English literature). Both novels have been successfully dramatized for television. Collins was born in London and qualified as a barrister. In 1848 he wrote a life of his father, the painter William Collins, and in 1850 published his first novel, Antonina . In 1851 he formed a friendship with the novelist Charles Dickens , with whom he collaborated on a number of works, including the play A Message from the Sea

DAVID MERRY , the immigrant ancestor of the Industry and New Vineyard Merrys, was a native of Tisbury, Dukes Co., Mass., as nearly as can be learned. He was born in 1741, and married, Dec. 29, 1761, Mrs. Eunice (Chase) Chase (born 1738), relict of Valentine Chase, and daughter of Isaac and Mary (Chase) Chase. Feb. 1, 1793, he bought lot No. 1 in Range 2, paying therefor the sum of eight pounds, sterling. There is some uncertainty as to the date of his removal to New Vineyard, but it was probably soon after making his purchase. This farm is now (1890) owned by Charles F. Oliver, its present occupant. Mr. Merry seems to have been a man much loved by his kindred, and his name is still borne and perpetuated by his descendants. He died July 8, 1815, aged 74 years. His wife died Aug. 6, 1797, aged 59 years. [David, Eunice and their son Asa are buried in Franklin County .] [For the ancestry of David Merry, see
