Tonight the moon is a cracker,
with a bite out of it
floating in the night, and in a week or so according to the calendar it will probably look like a silver football, and nine, maybe ten days ago it reminded me of a thin bright claw. But eventually by the end of the month, I reckon it will waste away to nothing, nothing but stars in the sky, and I will have a few nights to myself, a little time to rest my jittery pen. ambling along 44th Street
with Sonny Rollins for company,
his music flowing through the soft calipers of these earphones, as if he were right beside me on this clear day in March, the pavement sparkling with sunlight, pigeons fluttering off the curb, nodding over a profusion of bread crumbs. In fact, I would say my delight at being suffused with phrases from his saxophone some like honey, some like vinegar is surpassed only by my gratitude to Tommy Potter for taking the time to join us on this breezy afternoon with his most unwieldy bass and to the esteemed Arthur Taylor who is somehow managing to navigate this crowd with his cumbersome drums. And I bow deeply to Thelonious Monk for figuring out a way to motorize or whatever his huge piano so he could be with us today. This music is loud yet so confidential.

The Apple that Astonished Paris “But if something does flash before your eyes as you go under, it will probably be a fish, a quick blur of curved silver darting away, having nothing to do with your life or your death” states Billy Collins in his poem “The Art of drowning” ( www.bigsnap.com/billy.html ). Billy Collins’s poetry shines brighter than others due to the sarcastic yet funny style he uses to create his poems. Collins uses simplistic stanzas to try to create images that pull the reader away from real life and draw them into his poetic creation. Billy Collins’s cherished American poetry is featured largely throughout the United States. His poems rarely follow a significant topic; instead they are just thoughts that happen to pop into his head. Often, he uses poetry to offer relief in troubled times for himself and the reader. Billy Collins, a current teacher at Lehman College, was born in 1941 and has lived in New York City since his birth. Collins has completed fellowships at the New York Foundation for the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, and The Guggenheim Foundation. From day one, his talents as a writer shined through, as he was able to express his thoughts on paper well throughout grade school. Billy Collins doesn’t force meter or rhyme into his poems in order to draw the reader’s attention; instead he uses his witty descriptions and comedy. As quoted by Richard

Our Films
Billy Collins: On the Road with the Poet Laureate
Billy Collins is perhaps the first American poet since Robert Frost to enjoy both critical and popular acclaim. This 59-minute documentary captures the qualities that make Collins such a refreshing literary figure. With a film crew trailing him to poetry readings, to college classrooms, to his office and his home, and even into his car, he manages to remain amazingly witty, gracious, and open in discussing his life, his work, and the nature of poetry itself. Interviews with distinguished poets and critics Edward Hirsch and Richard Howard, with Librarian of Congress Dr. James Billington, and with Random House editor Daniel Menaker lend new perspectives on Collins's achievement. This is also the first documentary to explore the cultural role of the U.S. Poet Laureate, a position that Collins held between 2001-03. He is joined by former poets laureate Robert Hass, Rita Dove, and Robert Pinsky at the 2002 Dodge Poetry Festival for an amusing series of reflections on the history of this unique position, which is both a literary honor and a quasi-government position, as persuasive or as irrelevant as the writer chooses to make it. A writer of warmth and surreal humor whose voice is nonetheless inflected with the dark tones of what Frost called "moral panic," Collins can be seen and heard here reading some of his most famous poems, including "Introduction to Poetry," "Forgetfulness," "Lanyard," and "Nightclub." Students of poetry, and Collins's many fans, will find much here that entertains and illuminates.

The heart, no valentine, decides to quit after lunch, the power shut off like a switch, or a tiny dark ship is unmoored into the flow of the body's rivers, the brain a monastery, defenseless on the shore. This is what I think about when I shovel compost into a wheelbarrow, and when I fill the long flower boxes, then press into rows the limp roots of red impatiens the instant hand of Death always ready to burst forth from the sleeve of his voluminous cloak. Then the soil is full of marvels, bits of leaf like flakes off a fresco, red-brown pine needles, a beetle quick to burrow back under the loam. Then the wheelbarrow is a wilder blue, the

Billy Collins
With seven collections of poetry, the distinguished honor of Poet Laureate of the United States (2001-2003), and exceptional popularity with critics and the public alike, Billy Collins is a unique literary figure. His poetry is tender, sly and poignant with ironic twists and lyrical turns of phrase that resonate powerfully. His narrative voice is beautiful in its ease, playfully mocking, and more serious than it immediately seems. Collins cites his use of humor as a "door into the serious," tackling everything from a song stuck in his head to the ubiquitous hereafter. Though the poet has received fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Guggenheim Foundation, his most dramatic honors have come from a wide and appreciative readership. Collins's last three collections - Nine Horses, Sailing Alone Around the Room

"Moving from the position of United States poet laureate to New York State poet laureate might seem like a demotion or a drop in rank to the military-minded. It might even appear that I am heading toward eventually being crowned laureate of my zip code. But in fact, it is very gratifying to be honored again as a representative of poetry, this time by my native state where I grew upmore or lessand continue to live." - BC Billy Collins , former United States Poet Laureate for two consecutive terms (2001-2003), is one of America's best-loved and best-selling poets. No poet since Robert Frost has managed to combine high critical acclaim with such broad popular appeal. His readings are usually standing room only, and his audienceenhanced tremendously by his appearances on National Public Radioincludes people of all backgrounds and age groups. Author of seven collections, his poems are enjoyed by critics and readers alike for their plain language, friendly tone, intelligent humor, and profound observations about the meaning of everyday life. Phil Collins Most of you are against what I'm writing here. You're all Billy enthusiasts and think I'm bordering on being sac religious by slighting him like this. But let's look at it purely from a music standpoint. Here's a list of Phil's hits next to Billy's. Phil's Hits: A Groovy Kind of Love Against All Odds Another Day In Paradise Can't Stop Loving You Do You Remember I Wish It Would Rain Down In The Air Tonight In Too Deep One More Night Something Happened On The Way To Heaven Sussudio True Colors Two Hearts You Can't Hurry Love You'll Be In My Heart Billy's Hits: For The Longest Time It's Still Rock n' Roll To Me Just The Way You Are Only The Good Die Young Pianoman She's Always A Woman To Me She's Got A Way River Of Dreams Uptown Girl We Didn't Start The Fire You May Be Right It's been a long road, but one filled with plenty of Lite FM classics. And so Phil, because of all the great music you've given us and lack of gratitude the world has given back, DeROK.com honors you by placing you in the Hall of Legends as the greatest male vocal artist ever. illy Collins has published seven collections of poetry: Some of them are Questions About Angels The Art of Drowning Picnic, Lightning and his new collection of poems, Nine Horses . In spring 2003, an anthology of poems selected by Collins will appear: Poetry 180: A Turning Back to Poetry . He is a professor of English at Lehman College of the City University of New York. In June 2001, Billy Collins was appointed United States Poet Laureate 2001-2003. I'd been waiting to interview Billy Collins for many weeks. After a long day teaching high school English, I walk into my house and hear my wife, Dawn, yell down to me from the kitchen: "Johnny, Billy Collins called and wants you to call him at 6:00."

Today If ever there were a spring day so perfect, so uplifted by a warm intermittent breeze that it made you want to throw open all the windows in the house and unlatch the door to the canary's cage, indeed, rip the little door from its jamb, a day when the cool brick paths and the garden bursting with peonies seemed so etched in sunlight that you felt like taking a hammer to the glass paperweight on the living room end table

An Intimate Evening with Billy Collins,
Poet Laureate of the United States
Listen to the complete Billy Collins reading* (60:49 Real) US poet Laureate Billy Collins was in the North Country Thursday, August 21, 2003 to read his poetry, take audience questions, and sign books in the Clayton Opera House. The event, billed as "An Intimate Evening with Billy Collins," was sponsored (and introduced) by Bob Purcell as part of the centennial celebration of the historic hall overlooking one of the classic views of the Thousand Islands. About 200 people gathered in the bunting-decked opera house to hear Collins, who is nearing the end of his term as poet laureate, an honor bestowed by the Library of Congress. Response was enthusiaistic to his work, which is notable for its clarity as well as a self-effacing sense of humor. Collins is a fine performer, with a relaxed and well-paced style, and gave the audience an experience that lived up to the billing "intimate."

Dear Reader
Baudelaire considers you his brother,
and Fielding calls out to you every few paragraphs
as if to make sure you have not closed the book,
and now I am summoning you up again,
attentive ghost, dark silent figure standing
in the doorway of these words. Pope welcomes you into the glow of his study,
takes down a leather-bound Ovid to show you.
Tennyson lifts the latch to a moated garden,
and with Yeats you lean against a broken pear tree,
the day hooded by low clouds. But now you are here with me,
composed in the open field of this page, no room or manicured garden to enclose us, no Zeitgeist marching in the background, no heavy ethos thrown over us like a cloak. Instead, our meeting is so brief and accidental, unnoticed by the monocled eye of History, you could be the man I held the door for this morning at the bank or post office or the one who wrapped my speckled fish. You could be someone I passed on the street or the face behind the wheel of an oncoming car. The sunlight flashes off your windshield
