I hope Poetry 180 becomes an important and enriching part of the school day. billy collins Former Poet Laureate of the United States.
http://www.loc.gov/poetry/180/
The Library of Congress Welcome to Poetry 180. Poetry can and should be an important part of our daily lives. Poems can inspire and make us think about what it means to be a member of the human race. By just spending a few minutes reading a poem each day, new worlds can be revealed. Poetry 180 is designed to make it easy for students to hear or read a poem on each of the 180 days of the school year. I have selected the poems you will find here with high school students in mind. They are intended to be listened to, and I suggest that all members of the school community be included as readers. A great time for the readings would be following the end of daily announcements over the public address system. Listening to poetry can encourage students and other learners to become members of the circle of readers for whom poetry is a vital source of pleasure. I hope Poetry 180 becomes an important and enriching part of the school day. Billy Collins

Collins, Billy Death Beds
Genre Poem Keywords Death and Dying Disability History of Medicine Humor and Illness/Disability ... Tuberculosis Summary Death beds have been around for a long time. Ancient Greeks, Japanese monks, Medieval Christians, and tubercular Victorians all had opportunities to use them. Some folks were witty, some were slow, and some called for a priest when the time came. "And you and I, too, may lie on ours, / the vigilant family in a semicircle, / or the night nurse holding our hand / in the dark, or alone." We cannot avoid the death bed, but what we can hope for is "just at the end / a moment of pure awareness . . . . " [56 lines] Commentary Have you ever thought about the history of death beds? This poem approaches the topic with a light, but resonant and sure, touch. It moves gradually from a great distance (the ancients) closer and closer to us. Suddenly, where we least expect it (in the middle of a stanza), the poem engulfs us"you and I" look forward to lying on our own death beds, and expressing our own last hopes.

March, 2003 by James Beschta
Random House. 172p. c2001.0-375-75519-5. $13.95. SA* Collins' extremely popular collection is finally available in paperback. Considering its success in hardcover, this edition is a sure-fire hit at a more attractive price. Collins' selection as America's Poet Laureate served as a public acknowledgment of his position in the contemporary poetry scene, but it also enhanced his popularity through exposure and this collection of his best work is a treasure. Collins' work is enormously appealing. It is comprehensible, universal, clever, original and perceptive. His humor, so pervasive in his public readings, is accessible on the page and his ability to build a poem from the mundane observation to the unexpected and insightful conclusion through shifting scope and focus is unmatched. His approach is unique in its disarming familiarity, its unabashed honesty. For example, Collins opens his poem "Fishing on the Susquehanna in July" with the lines, "I have never been fishing on the Susquehanna I or any river for that matter I to be perfectly honest. I Not in July or any month...." And he ends his poem "Budapest" with "...while I gaze out the window and imagine Budapest I or some other city where I have never been."

Billy Collins
Wolf
A wolf is reading a book of fairy tales.
The moon hangs over the forest, a lamp.
He is not assuming a human position,
say, cross-legged against a tree,
as he would in a cartoon.
This is a real wolf, standing on all fours,
his rich fur bristling in the night air, his head bent over the book open on the ground. He does not sit down for the words would be too far away to be legible, and it is with difficulty that he turns each page with his nose and forepaws. When he finishes the last tale he lies down in pine needles. He thinks about what he has read, the stories passing over his mind, like the clouds crossing the moon. A zigzag of wind shakes down hazelnuts. The eyes of owls yellow in the branches. The wolf now paces restlessly in circles around the book until he is absorbed by the power of its narration, making him one of its illustrations, a small paper wolf, flat as print. Later that night, lost in a town of pigs, he knocks over houses with his breath.

Fox This is the only reality, wrote Sartre, this public garden and its gravel paths dappled with sunlight where women are walking their Pomeranians. But somewhere else he wrote that this is actually not the real thing, where the waiter is pretending to be a waiter and the philosopher at a small table is pretending to be a customer, raising his hand now as customers will do to get the waiter's attention. It is all play-acting, Sartre typed with a cigarette hanging from his lips, the tray and the white apron being props the beautiful prop of milky green anise in a glass.

CURRENT ISSUE POETRY Magazine
FEATURED POET ARCHIVES BILLY COLLINS Study in Orange and White I knew that James Whistler was part of the Paris scene, but I was still surprised when I found the painting among all the colored dots and mobile brushstrokes of the French Impressionists. And I was surprised to notice after a few minutes of benign staring, how that woman, stark in profile and fixed forever in her chair, began to resemble my own ancient mother who was now fixed forever in the stars, the air, the earth. You can understand why he titled the painting "Arrangement in Gray and Black" instead of what everyone naturally calls it, but afterward, as I walked along the river bank, I imagined how it might have broken the woman's heart to be demoted from mother to a mere composition, a study in colorlessness. As the summer couples leaned into each other along the quay and the wide, low-slung boats full of spectators slid up and down the Seine between the carved stone bridges and their watery reflections

Duck/Rabbit The lamb may lie down with the lion,
But they will never be as close as this pair Who share the very lines Of their existence, whose overlapping is their raison d'etre How strange and symbiotic the binds That make one disappear Whenever the other is spied. Throw the duck a stare, And the rabbit hops down his hole. Give the rabbit the eye, And the duck waddles off the folio. Say, these could be our mascots, you and I I could look at you forever. And never see the two of us together. Fishing on the Susquehanna in July I have never been fishing on the Susquehanna or on any river for that matter to be perfectly honest.
