Billy Collins
Billy Collins is an American phenomenon. No poet since Robert Frost has managed to combine high critical acclaim with such broad popular appeal. His work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Paris Review , and The American Scholar , he is a Guggenheim fellow and a New York Public Library "Literary Lion." His last three collections of poems have broken sales records for poetry. His readings are usually SRO, and his audience - enlarged tremendously by his appearances on National Public Radio - includes people of all backgrounds and age groups. The poems themselves best explain this phenomenon. The typical Collins poem opens on a clear and hospitable note but soon takes an unexpected turn; poems that begin in irony may end in a moment of lyric surprise. No wonder Collins sees his poetry as "a form of travel writing" and considers humor "a door into the serious." It is a door that many thousands of readers have opened with amazement and delight. Billy Collins writes lovely poems . . . Limpid, gently and consistently startling, more serious than they seem, they describe all the worlds that are and were and some others besides.

After I do a few drafts, I type up the poem on a Macintosh G3 and then send it out the door. INTERVIEWER Well, that's certainly the kind of information we're after, but can you tell us about the actual making of what you send out? Could you go through the genesis of a poem? COLLINS There's a lot of waiting around until something happens. Some poets like David Lehman and William Stafford set out on these very willful programs to write a poem a day. They're extending what Catullus said about "never a day without a line." But most poets don't write a poem a day. For me it's a very sporadic activity. Until recently, I thought "occasional poetry" meant that you wrote only occasionally. So there's a lot of waiting, and there's a kind of vigilance involved. I

Reader-friendly hospitable congenial welcoming ... These are some of the words often used to describe Collins's work. Such attributes surely help explain his popular following. Among other vaguely heretical beliefs, America's former Poet Laureate insists that a poem should give pleasure on its first reading. Still, it's easy (and patently unfair) to make too much of how accessible Billy Collins's artful verse can be when in fact his seductive, hilarious, surprising, and expansive work appeals to the literary establishment, as well. "Billy Collins writes lovely poems," John Updike raves, "lovely in a way almost nobody's since Roethke's are. Limpid, gently and consistently startling, more serious than they seem, they describe all the worlds that are and were and some others besides."

THIS WEEK'S FEATURED POET BILLY COLLINS Reading an Anthology of
Chinese Poems of the Sung Dynasty,
I Pause To Admire the Length
and Clarity of Their Titles It seems these poets have nothing up their ample sleeves they turn over so many cards so early, telling us before the first line whether it is wet or dry, night or day, the season the man is standing in, even how much he has had to drink. Maybe it is autumn and he is looking at a sparrow. Maybe it is snowing on a town with a beautiful name. "Viewing Peonies at the Temple of Good Fortune on a Cloudy Afternoon" is one of Sun Tung Po's. "Dipping Water from the River and Simmering Tea" is another one, or just "On a Boat, Awake at Night." And Lu Yu takes the simple rice cake with "In a Boat on a Summer Evening I Heard the Cry of a Waterbird. It Was Very Sad and Seemed To Be Saying My Woman Is CruelMoved, I Wrote This Poem." There is no iron turnstile to push against here as with headings like "Vortex on a String,"

Polemic Rave about America’s Poet Laureate
Just read some of Billy Collins. The guy is so pleasant and easy it’s no wonder he became America’s poet laureate. Jesus Christ, what a thing to have in a country of 250 million of which probably less than a million ever touch shit like poetry . But you’ve got to have one who does it best, like The President or Michael Jordan. One who hits the popular jugular with a vengeance because he thrives, absolutely thrives on one thing: accepted mediocrity hanging on to the underbelly of poetry just enough to give you that slightly elevated feel that, as we all know, should come with

when i heard the learn'd astronomer
when the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me
when i was shown the charts and diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them
when i sitting heard the astronomer where he
lectured with much applause in the lecture room
how soon unaccountable i became tired and sick
till rising and gliding out i wander'd off by myself in the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time look'd up in perfect silence at the stars. Whitman's perfect silence is perhaps the truest of all appreciations. At the end of the day, this is how we should be approaching this art form. Every person is capable of expressing themselves: some choose poetry. I've put lots of poems, essays, links, and other related things into this site, so if thats your thing, enjoy. Here's a poem by Billy Collins. Though it may seem corny at first glance, I think that it wonderfully expresses a view on poetry that is too often overlooked. Introduction to Poetry I ask them to take a poem and hold it up to the light like a color slide or press an ear against its hive.

Read by Billy Collins) Marginalia Sometimes the notes are ferocious,
skirmishes against the author
raging along the borders of every page
in tiny black script.
If I could just get my hands on you,
Kierkegaard, or Conor Cruise O'Brien,
they seem to say,
I would bolt the door and beat some logic into your head.
Other comments are more offhand, dismissive -
"Nonsense." "Please!" "HA!!" -
that kind of thing. I remember once looking up from my reading, my thumb as a bookmark, trying to imagine what the person must look like why wrote "Don't be a ninny" alongside a paragraph in The Life of Emily Dickinson. Students are more modest needing to leave only their splayed footprints along the shore of the page. One scrawls "Metaphor" next to a stanza of Eliot's. Another notes the presence of "Irony" fifty times outside the paragraphs of A Modest Proposal.
