The Principia: Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy

I am responding to the person who wrote the second review, the student who decided to use this book to study for an exam in basic calculus. What are you, crazy? Why would ANYONE think they could learn "baby calc" from the great book in which Newton elucidated his theory of the universe!? Did you think about asking anyone, first? I'm a college math prof and my guess is that ANY math teacher would have suggested you study from a modern, elementary calc book, instead. (Then you make matters wor... more...

This book by Dr. Bernard Cohen, a physics professor at the University of Pittsburg , is perhaps the best source of objective information about nuclear energy and its uses, problems, and benefits. Not being a part of the nuclear industry allows Dr. Cohen to objectively evaluate from a scientist's perspective virtually every issue surrounding the nuclear industry and the results may surprise you. We can not overstate the quality of this book. Title: Cohen, Bernard L. Author: Cohen, Bernard L. ISBN: 0-306-41425-2

Date of Defense Availability unrestricted Abstract A study was conducted of the degradation of benzene-, p-toluene-, and alkylbenzenesulfonates under the action of ionizing radiation from a 3400 curie, Cobalt-60 irradiator. Effects of varying solute concentrations, pH, and dissolved oxygen concentrations were observed as functions of the energy absorbed by the solutions. The rates of oxygen depletion and the rates of hydrogen peroxide, enol, and sulfate production were followed by irradiating the solutions for varying periods of time. Results of the irradiations indicate that, in aerated solutions, the major mode of degradation is by desulfonation of the molecule. Degradation was accompanied by significant losses in oxygen, possibly a result of direct oxidation of the solute by radiation, rather than by free radical reactions. Enols were also found to occur, but at very low concentrations. The product formed as a result of desulfonation of benzenesulfonic acid appeared to be quinonoid rather than phenolic in nature.

In Minneapolis the water tastes of chlorine, bleached out
memories of old conflicts dissolving into themselves like ice-cubes.
In Denver, the water carries occasional whiffs
of ammonia, but who cares? Not me,
I'm wearing a new suit like a nationality.
I'm testing out America for effect, slipping it over
my namebrand underclothing
to see if it makes me feel that Bomb Alaska
is a joke about Canadians, or that people move about
only in order to fulfil national objectives - tourism, for example. No more border-crossings at eight in the evening for me, not with this passport, no more queuing for the wrong stamp which will serve you ill at Athens airport in February when it's snowing. America, you have come to keep us neat. You haven't the time to commute death sentences on the way to the president's office. No room for "I'm sorry", having a very nice time swallowing dozens of whoopie burgers at the 1982 World's Fair, understanding it's not the laughter that means America, it's the actual punchlines - the what "upstairs" means to the breathy couple

Tinnitus is the spirit of the age. William comes home, flicks the radio on, turns it up. His head is full of noise. He likes it that way. He thinks he does. Someone in another room calls out. A greeting? A demand for quiet? William answers: 'Hi!' No answer. They live in Sydney, a mumbling city. William cannot hear what anyone else says, and so far as he knows, they cannot hear him. Their conversations are like this: 'Hey, look at that woman's clothes.' 'Look at what?' 'That woman's clothes.' 'Clothes?' 'Yeah.' 'Oh. Yeah.' The city is an endless conversation with itself, constantly self-asserting. They cannot talk over it. Whatever they say adds to the noise. The noise level never diminishes: if some sounds stop for a while, others fill in the gaps. William hears unrecognisable sounds, deep, echoing, causeless noises, creaks and groans as if the city were metamorphosing beneath the ground, melding with the rocks. William pictures the roots of the city in equilibrium with reservoirs of magma. The noise: if everyone in Sydney spoke simultaneously the city would become louder and louder until the buildings shook and the streets cracked apart. The city would collapse. Pop. They tell each other they're going deaf: 'Loud music, traffic, industrial machinery.'

Andrew Z. Fire, Ph.D. is one of the scientists who developed the study of RNAi, a technique used in determining gene function in animals, plants, and humans. Dr. Fire created a set of studies that helps us better understand how RNAi works by using double-stranded RNA as a molecular muffler to silence the activity of individual genes. Fire uses C. elegans to study how primitive cells form tissues during development. RNAi is fast becoming a revolutionary way to explain disease and design medical treatments. Several scientists have already succeeded in using RNAi to kill HIV employing tests with lab-grown cells. While further experiments will determine if RNAi can help treat AIDS, it is already clear that RNAi is a valuable tool for understanding AIDS and other diseases caused by viruses.
