Highly Recommended by Harriet Klausner Rob Lewis is a family man, who loves his wife and children. He lives a decent middle class existence in Washington DC, working as a computer programmer. Everything suddenly changes for Rob when he realizes that he has a new God-like mental ability. He can read the minds and hearts of people and influence their thoughts. Being a high minded adult, Rob believes that he can solve some of the world's worse problem spots. He plans to offer his gift to the President for the betterment of the world. However, with power comes responsibility and Rob gets a major dose of that. He finds himself struggling with all the woes and concerns of the people surrounding him, including his own children. To stop from destroying his children's independence, Rob flees to New York where his mind and his appearance rapidly deteriorates. When he nearly rapes his girl friend via the use of his powers, he knows it is time to confront himself and the ultimate source of his prowess, even at the cost of his life. HOW LIKE A GOD is a fascinating allegorical science fiction work of art that can be read on two levels: that of a mind falling deep into depression due to the inability to cope and that of the authority and responsibilities associated with the powers of a God. Brenda W. Clough scores big time with the decent into hell by Rob, but somewhat fails in her efforts to provide the even bigger picture: accountability that should be associated with a God (think classic Star Trek episode where the officer obtains God-like powers, but fails to use them wisely). HOW LIKE A GOD remains a unique tale worth reading by fans of science fiction who prefer their tale to be a bit different. This book challenges and provokes, while forcing the reader to cogitate, an achievement only a truly gifted writer accomplishes.

How Like a God
Brenda W. Clough
Tor, 1997, 287 pages, 32.95$Can., ISBN 0-312-86263-6 While "superpowers" are usually the province of comic book superheroes, Science Fiction also touches on the subject from time to time, usually from a much more "realistic" perspective. Compare Robert Silverberg's Dying Inside to any issue of the X-Men for a good shock. Brenda W. Clough seemed to be aware of this as she wrote How Like a God . It's the story of an ordinary husband, father and computer programmer named Rob Lewis who suddenly acquires the power to read and shape minds. Clough's protagonist makes several explicit references to the numerous comic books he had read at a younger age, while undergoing a descent through the lowest levels of society.

Hardcover: [ Amazon.com Amazon.ca Amazon.co.uk Chapters.Indigo.ca Paperback: [ Amazon.com Amazon.ca Amazon.co.uk Last month, I discussed Brenda Clough's How Like a God. In it, regular guy Rob Lewis gains the power to read and control other people's minds, and also gains the power of immortality. When his friend Edwin Barbarossa is at death's door after a climactic battle, Rob gives him the power of immortality to save his life. Edwin, who is in line for a manned mission to Mars, survives an accident in space which kills all of his companions, raising suspicions about how he managed to survive. Did he kill the other astronauts to steal their air? Eventually, Edwin's secret comes out, and a storm breaks over his head. Some people want to gain the secret of Edwin's immortality, no matter what the cost. Rob, whose whole survival strategy has consisted of keeping his head down and keeping his powers on a tight leash, is faced with a dilemma: how can he help his friend, without bringing down an even more intense storm of publicity upon his own head?

May Be Some Time
a novella by Brenda W Clough
(published in Analog , April 2001, $3.50.) Rating: "A", maybe "A+". The best 'man out of time' story ever? Captain Titus Oates, a member of Robert Scott's 1912 British Antarctic expedition, is best known for his last words: "I am just going outside and may be some time." Thus doubly qualifying himself to star in Clough's wonderful new time-rescue story [ note 1 Capt Oates awakes in 2045 to the attentions of two ministering angels.... One, Dr Shulamith 'Shell' Gedeon, takes him for a walk in the park. Titus is taken aback at 21st-century female attire: "Even the street beggars in Calcutta didn't go about bare to above the knees... If they allowed women to become doctors, surely it was not a very much further descent to let in whores?" [ note 2 ] Titus asks Shell, "How did you ever become a doctor? A nigger, a Jew and a woman!" Whack! Yes, he's off to a fine start in 21st century couth and romance.... Which is the best part of "Time" seldom have I read such a convincing and consistent evocation of a man out of time. The backstory's fun too Oates was rescued as a proof-of-concept from a successful SETI decryption of plans from the alien 'Forties', who may have given humans an FTL star drive which of course can also be used as a time-machine.

The Theory and Practice of Titles
by B.W. Clough
A writer needs many gifts to succeed. One that I fatally lack is the gift of titling. I can write a good book or story, but choosing an appropriate, zingy, marketable title for it is often beyond me. To compensate for this appalling handicap, I've analyzed the theory and practice of titling to a fare-thee-well. I can't precisely say the analysis helps me find workable titles, but it does keep me busy. It is only an article of faith among writers that the right title can make or break a book. It would be expensive but interesting to set up an airtight experiment that would actually prove that a sufficiently bad, inappropriate, or undistinguished title will send a novel to the remainder tables. But we may look at historical examples. The classic instance might be Gone with the Wind , which was titled Pansy until the heroine's name change forced an alteration. And you could argue that, considering his later career, Adolf Hitler's autobiography might have sold perfectly well under its wordy original title

Clough spent much of her childhood overseas, courtesy of the U.S. government. She has lived in Laos, the Philippines, Hong Kong, and Germany. Several years working as a meek mild-mannered reporter for a major metropolitan newsletter enabled her to write a fantasy novel, The Crystal Crown , published in 1984. She has also written The Dragon of Mishbil, The Realm Beneath and The Name of the Sun , and An Impossumble Summer , a children's novel. A number of short stories have appeared in magazines and anthologies, including The Sandman Book of Dreams Her latest book, How Like A God , was published by Tor Books in March 1997. It is a contemporary suburban fantasy, of which reviewers say: Clough brings myth and science and plain human existence (complex as all get-out) together for what proves to be a fine blend, and a very good read, offering physical, psychological, and metaphysical insights into the human condition, along with the sometimes-delightfully outlandish action that drives the best of pulp fiction. In the science-fiction and fantasy field it is a truth universally acknowledged as much as anything in our fractious community can be that if a writer can attend only one con a year, it should be the World Science Fiction Convention. It’s nearly always a schlep, it’s hot, crowded and exhausting, and it can be expensive. But Worldcon is the major annual get-together of the entire genre in all its diversity. Your editor, your agent, your readers past and future, the dealers hawking your books and magazines, will almost certainly be there, as well as all your fellow writers. So possibly you should go too. Once that decision is made, how should you get the most out of your
