Special report: University administration
Why Bill Clinton is the wrong man for Oxford
Catherine Bennett
Thursday January 9, 2003
The Guardian

Veneris administer erectissime, indefatigabilis pilis, o gulose, dilecte sine causa amicis qui Britanniae praesunt ignaris, tuum ingenium ad nummos cogendum te, Praeses Clinton, Cancellarium Universitatis Oxoniensis faciat fructuosum.* It's just a draft, obviously. If Bill Clinton is first nominated, then elected chancellor of the University of Oxford as successor to Roy Jenkins, then the author of his citation may well wish to dwell on some of his less well-known attributes. In addition to his priapism, his greed and friendships with rich men, for instance, Clinton is also recognised for his generosity with pardons; his unusual arrangements with Hillary, that uxor validissima et iracunda; and for his highly regarded, if pricey line in after-dinner speaking ("His simplicity, elegance and friendship were very precious and contributed to make this evening unforgettable." - Paris Golf and Country Club).

British stage idol Fanny Kemble (1809-93) married a wealthy American slave-owner in 1834. Although the marriage turned out disastrously, it provided a bonanza for historians. No shrinking violet and a prolific writer, Fanny wrote profusely on slavery, America, and women's issues till her death. The Kembles were England's leading theatrical family. Sarah Siddons was her aunt, but Fanny became equally celebrated. Despite this, her family were chronically in debt, and the American tour was one ...

After Jorney of too weeks find mysilf on free ground and wish that you was here with me. I hope that you will try to come." James Masey, fugitive slave Harriet Tubman, one of those pivotal figures whom history has somehow managed to skirt, was personally responsible for conducting to freedom hundreds of slaves like James Masey. Having escaped from slavery herself in late 1849, from a farm on Maryland's Eastern Shore, Tubman began working for the Underground Railroad in 1850 at the age of 25. The Underground Railroad was a vast, secret, interconnected network dedicated to freeing African-Americans from slavery in the South by escorting them to nonslave states in the North. For the most part, it employed "stationmasters," who operated safe houses, and "conductors," who led former slaves northward.

Fields dappled with sun and lush with grain were crisscrossed by dozens of waterways throughout the peninsula, joining rivers flowing from marshes out to the beckoning salt water. Waterfowl and wildlife were abundant, offering hunters as rich a harvest as that gathered by those who cultivated the land. The Eastern Shore was separated from its sister slave counties by the oyster beds that spread underneath the water to Maryland's other, western, shore, where the bustling ports of Annapolis and Baltimore dominated the regional economy. Beaver traders originally populated the Eastern Shore, but by the 1660s the pelt trade was depleted and planters began to settle the region. Commercial rather than domestic agriculture flourished, as tobacco farms dominated at first. By the 1750s, fields of tobacco were replaced by fields of corn, as planters found it less labor intensive and more profitable to plant food for export to the West Indies. Philadelphia merchants moved south along Indian trails, scouting for grain, finding eager suppliers along the Choptank River.

Fanny Kemble's Civil Wars
Catherine Clinton
A British stage star turned Georgia plantation mistress, Fanny Kemble is perhaps best known as America's most unlikely abolitionist, whose passionate writings against human bondage made her a heroine of the Union cause. Irrepressible in word and deed, Kemble captured the imaginations of many famous Americans of the antebellum era. Walt Whitman was held spellbound at one of her early New York City stage performances, rhapsodizing: "Fanny Kemble! Name to conjure up great mimic scenes withal perhaps the greatest! Nothing finer did ever stage exhibit." Henry James predicted that Fanny Kemble's literary gifts would "make her what I call historic," and abolitionist Catharine Sedgwick enthused: "She is a most captivating creature, steeped to the very lips in genius." By the mid-1830s, American society was firmly in the grip of Kemble's celebrity. A tulip was named in her honor. Young ladies adopted "Fanny Kemble curls" and donned "Fanny Kemble caps." Harvard undergraduates smeared themselves with molasses to fend off rivals for scarce tickets to her performances, and lecture attendance fell off so sharply on the afternoons of Kemble's matinees that Harvard faculty threatened to cancel classes. In a fit of passion, one smitten suitor rented the horse Niagara so that he could be astride the mount Kemble had once ridden. Her private life, however, was the stuff of tabloids for different reasons. She married, for love, Pierce Butler a Philadelphia native and heir to a Georgia plantation fortune but the union soon turned bitter. In her correspondence, Kemble derisively referred to her husband as "my lord and master," and tried to run away from the couple's Philadelphia home after just four months of marriage. This defiant behavior fueled public scandal, which reached an incendiary peak in 1835, when Kemble published her
