Reviewed by Walter Chaw
H al Clement's 1979 novel, Mission of Gravity is one of the tent poles of hard science fiction, fashioning an oblong world, Mesklin, where polar gravity reaches into the low 700g-range while counteracting centrifugal force at its equator allows for a more human-friendly 3g. When human explorers lose a probe at one of the planet's crushing poles, they enlist a crew of native sentient millipede sailors on a quest across their home world on a search and recovery mission. Though Frank Herbert's Dune series (or Niven's "Known Space") is the better-known planet-maker, Clement's work is at once less messianic and more thoughtful: less epic fantasy and more speculative, in the best sense of the word. The strength of the piece is its clarity and wide accessibility, focusing as it does on the interaction between human handlers and their Mesklinite wards who, as it happens, have an extremely similar psychological constitution to the explorers of Earth's Age of Discovery. In its way, then, Clement's republished anthology, Heavy Planet is both science fiction and historical fiction mining the familiar for the possible in ways that any successful fiction must. It's seldom given over to technical jargon, relying instead on fairly elementary physics to dictate the twists and hardships faced by alien Barl and the intrepid crew of the Bree. The best moment is its quietest, as a human explorer lifts Barl from the ground to gain a better vantage point on top of a human vehicle: the good intentions of the man at direct odds with the instincts and phobias of a creature that has spent its life in mortal terror of heights and falls.

BOOKS By Brian Stillman Rest in Space
Hal Clement, a hard sci-fi life.
As he sat in a back room at 2002’s PhilCon (Philadelphia’s annual science-fiction convention), Hal Clement looked less like a superstar and more like somebody’s confused grandfather. But neither the half-eaten jelly donut in his hand–constantly on the verge of divulging its strawberry-flavored guts everywhere–nor his forest-green blazer, khaki pants and robin’s-egg-blue v-neck sweater ("doddering chic"?) could change the fact that, more than 60 years go, Clement revolutionized the field of science fiction, becoming in the process one of the genre’s most important and beloved authors. Like the books they pen, you can’t judge a writer by his cover. Clement, who died in his sleep on October 29, 2003, at the age of 81, effectively created what is now known as "hard sf," a combination of accurate science and rousing, idea-based storytelling. From his first published short story, 1942’s "Proof," to his final novel, 2003’s

Hal Clement Died
Moshe Feder just called to say that Hal Clement has died. We had dinner with Clement a few weeks ago at Albacon. He seemed in pretty good shape for his age. Also, Greg Benford called. He said he's heard from Larry Niven, who had been evacuated because of the fires, that Niven house was intact, but that the whole area around it was black. 10/31/03, Gerald Jonas in the NYT: Harry Clement Stubbs, Writer of Classic Science Fiction, Dies at 81 Link Cosmos
Comments That is very sad news. He was the first SF writer I ever met, back in 1970. He was a nice earnest sweet guy, totally unassuming (he often worked registration at Boskone, just like anyone in the club, and I'm pretty sure he considered himself to be a fan as well as a pro). He was a high-school science teacher for many years, and probably an exceedingly good one he certainly had both the temperament and the knowledge that it would take. Harry gave gallons of blood, quite literally. If I recall correctly, he was shot down during WW II and had a fairly narrow escape, and I think the blood may have been his way of paying forward the help he received then; but don't trust my memory it's a long time since I heard about the episode, and of course we can't ask him now. ...But he was that kind of person. It was always a pleasure to see him or speak with him, and he will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.

A hard SF Grand Master goes sailing with Polynesians on a deep-space, deep-ocean planet Noise
By Hal Clement
Tor Books
Hardcover, Sept. 2003 256 pages ISBN: 0-765-30857-6 MSRP: $23.95 U.S./$33.95 Can. Review by D. Douglas Fratz ainui is a lifeless deep-ocean planet with no land, an unbreathable atmosphere, seismic activity that causes tsunamis and waterspouts, and continuous thunder and lightning. It was settled by Polynesians who now survive tenuously by biotechnology on floating islands and sailing catamarans. Long-range communication is impossible, a lack of silicon limits electronic technology, and only the largest island, Muamoku, has laser beacons that allow off-world visits. Mike Hoani is a historical linguist who comes to Kainui to study language evolution among the Polynesians. After landing near Muamoku, he joins a catamaran crewed by Captain Wanaka, her husband Keo, and a 10-year-old girl named 'Ao, who has a talking doll named 'Oloa. They harvest metals from artificial jellylike mats that submerge and concentrate specific metals from the deep waters, then return to the surface for harvesting. They wear soundproof armor to breath when outside the sealed cabin and speak a language evolved from Polynesian tongues, as well as using a sign language called "finger." Mike slowly learns about the language, culture and practices of the crew as they harvest metals and look for other ships with which to trade, always in fear of damage by "hacker" organisms or meeting "pirates."
